[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Social media streams and remote sensing data have emerged as new sources for tracking disaster events, and assessing their damages. Previous studies focus on a case-by-case approach, where a specific event was first chosen and filtering criteria (e.g., keywords, spatiotemporal information) are manually designed and used to retrieve relevant data for disaster analysis. This paper presents a framework that synthesizes multi-sourced data (e.g., social media, remote sensing, Wikipedia, and Web), spatial data mining and text mining technologies to build an architecturally resilient and elastic solution to support disaster analysis of historical and future events. Within the proposed framework, Wikipedia is used as a primary source of different historical disaster events, which are extracted to build an event database. Such a database characterizes the salient spatiotemporal patterns and characteristics of each type of disaster. Additionally, it can provide basic semantics, such as event name (e.g., Hurricane Sandy) and type (e.g., flooding) and spatiotemporal scopes, which are then tuned by the proposed procedures to extract additional information (e.g., hashtags for searching tweets), to query and retrieve relevant social media and remote sensing data for a specific disaster. Besides historical event analysis and pattern mining, the cloud-based framework can also support real-time event tracking and monitoring by providing on-demand and elastic computing power and storage capabilities. A prototype is implemented and tested with data relative to the 2011 Hurricane Sandy and the 2013 Colorado flooding. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The increasing research interest in global climate change and the rise of the public awareness have generated a significant demand for new tools to support effective visualization of big climate data in a cyber environment such that anyone from any location with an Internet connection and a web browser can easily view and comprehend the data. In response to the demand, this paper introduces a new web-based platform for visualizing multidimensional, time-varying climate data on a virtual globe. The web-based platform is built upon a virtual globe system Cesium, which is open-source, highly extendable and capable of being easily integrated into a web environment. The emerging WebGL technique is adapted to support interactive rendering of 3D graphics with hardware graphics acceleration. To address the challenges of transmitting and visualizing voluminous, complex climate data over the Internet to support real-time visualization, we develop a stream encoding and transmission strategy based on video-compression techniques. This strategy allows dynamic provision of scientific data in different precisions to balance the needs for scientific analysis and visualization cost. Approaches to represent, encode and decode processed data are also introduced in detail to show the operational workflow. Finally, we conduct several experiments to demonstrate the performance of the proposed strategy under different network conditions. A prototype, PolarGlobe, has been developed to visualize climate data in the Arctic regions from multiple angles. [Termes IGN] traitement répartiRésumé : (Auteur) Recent rapid development of wireless communication, mobile computing, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), and spatially enabled sensors are leading to an exponential growth of available mobility data produced continuously at high speed. Due to these advancements, a new class of monitoring applications has come to the focus, including real-time intelligent transportation systems, traffic monitoring and mobile objects tracking. These new information flow processing (IFP) application domains need to process huge volume of mobility data arriving in the form of continuous data streams from mobile objects. IFP applications are pushing traditional database technologies beyond their limits due to their massively increasing data volumes and demands for real-time processing. Mobility data, i.e. real-time, transient, time-varying sequences of spatio-temporal data items, generated by embedded positioning sensors demonstrates at least two Big Data core features: volume and velocity. Existing distributed data stream management systems (DSMS), real-time computing systems (RTCS) and their processing models are dominantly based on relational paradigm and continuous operator model. Thus, they have rudimentary spatio-temporal capabilities, provide expensive fault recovery requiring either hot replication or long recovery times, and do not handle faults and slow nodes. The framework proposed in this paper is a cornerstone towards efficient real-time managing and monitoring of mobile objects through distributed spatio-temporal streams processing on large clusters. A prototype implementation is rooted in a new stream processing model that overcomes the challenges of current distributed stream processing models and enable seamless integration with batch and interactive processing like MapReduce. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Whether it is sunrise, the weekend, or Christmas, some form of temporal structure or periodic pattern governs our daily activities. Understanding them is essential to making sense of human activity, because they frame normality and allow us to identify abnormalities. However, cultural heterogeneity and scale greatly complicate our ability to uncover and understand human activity at a given time within a region. Current research in the field of visual analytics and geography provide methods of addressing spatiotemporal periodicity, but they fall short in providing access to multiple spatial and temporal scales via a relevant calendar. In response to these shortcomings, we developed PerSE (periodicity in spatiotemporal events), a coordinated-view Web application designed to aid users in the detection and analysis of calendar-related periodicity in spatiotemporal event data sets. Given the complexity of such a visualization tool, this paper focuses on the usability and learnability of PerSE. We evaluated the tool through a 20-participant study that consisted of training, a multiple-choice test, and the System Usability Scale. Our analysis of the results shows that the complex combination of visual tools and multi-scale, multi-calendar capability used within PerSE is effective, but still in need of usability improvements.
