The new media made this development possible and they will decisively influence the future of the knowledge-oriented society. These media are important bases for many innovations in almost all social and technical fields, such as education and further training. New media - new possibilities! The development of Internet platforms to support the transmission of knowledge is a recent phenomenon. The ETH Zurich fosters, through a funding program (Filep), projects that promote pedagogic or methodical innovations in teaching and learning. This dissertation, which aims to design and implement new learning and working methods for geodetic calculations and analyses, was also supported by this fund.
The thesis describes the design, development, implementation and evaluation of an internet platform for geodesy. The aim of this project is to develop a more effective and more efficient problem-oriented learning as well as an optimization of the calculation processes in geodetic analysis. To that end, the teaching and training environment combines theoretical treatises, in descriptive and interactive form, with web services for the processing and evaluation of geodetic measurements. The focus of this project was on the design and the prototypical implementation of closely interlinked learning and computation modules. To that end, this project concentrated on the didactical model, various structuring concepts regarding the subjects as well as on the sequences of the calculation processes. It is obvious that the realization of such a multimedia learning and working environment represents a very complex and interdisciplinary field. A concept for the appropriate realization of such a platform was developed on the basis of technical requirements, computer-based learning, as well as on the principles of learning theory.
The realized Internet platform, which offers the advantage of being both multilingual and free of special/temporal constrains, consists of several learning modules. These modules illustrate the fundamentals of geodesy as well as knowledge achieved in the field of geodetic adjustment, amongst others at the ETH Zurich (e.g. robust estimators). The learning environment is supplemented by web-based computation modules in order to enable the evaluation of geodetic measurements. These tools are not limited to simulations or to simplified problems, but rather build on professional software, which cover a broad spectrum of the required processes. Through the central administration of the whole system, both new findings in the theory and new developments within the software can be made available to all users in timely manner. The teaching and working environment that developed from this project could be integrated into the training section of the institute of geodesy and photogrammetry of the ETH Zurich and has already been evaluated with positive results. The first chapters of the thesis give a theoretical overview of the various topics relevant for the development of a teaching and learning platform for geodetic computation. Moreover, these chapters describe the necessary requirements for the innovative learning and working environment, and show which potential can be exploited. The subsequent chapters are dedicated to the formulation and to the development of the Internet platform. These chapters clarify the realization of the project and explain the relevance of the aspects considered. Finally, an outlook over possible further research in this domain, as well as over platform extensions is given.
In addition to this writing, a substantial part of the work of the author lay in the realization of the concept. The architecture was constructed with selected technical components, which served as the base for the actual developments and programming of this project. In each phase of the development the evaluations of different user groups were considered. The web application that emerged out of this project manages all interactions of the users, makes possible and supports the execution of computation processes on-line, and administers all data.Note de contenu : 1 Einführung

[Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Globalization is contributing to the blurring of borders making irrelevant the distinctions between domestic and international health problems. Cross-border and global health spatial information systems (CBHSIS) are required to address the new global health challenges. There is a need to build and document alternatives for addressing the technological, economic, and sociocultural-political challenges encountered in the creation and deployment of these systems. This paper documents the building of a prototype Web-based multimedia GIS system for use in a public health context using Open Source Software and Open Specifications and its deployment across the US-Mexico border. These technologies offer advantages in addressing several of the challenges previously mentioned. We highlight the technological and sociocultural-political issues important in successful collaboration across borders and cultures and in the creation of interoperable CBHSIS. [Termes IGN] service web sémantiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The ability to process geospatial data will be a great benefit for spatial data infrastructures. This requires the ability to compose data providing services with geoprocessing services. Discovering suitable geoprocessing services is a major challenge in this endeavour. Current (keyword-based) approaches to service discovery are inherently restricted by the ambiguities of natural language, which can lead to low precision and/or recall. To alleviate these problems, we propose to use an ontology-based approach to GI service discovery, which rests on two ideas. Ontologies describing geospatial operations are used to create descriptions of requirements and service capabilities; matches between these descriptions are identified based on function subtyping. We use a running example from the geospatial domain to analyse which problems can occur in existing keyword- and ontology-based approaches and how the discovery of geoprocessing services differs from other service discovery tasks. The example is also used for illustrating the prototypical implementation of the proposed approach.
