The satellite was eventually rocketed beyond Earth's atmosphere on 24th January from Tanegashima Space Centre. We present its features and first images from this novel new earth-observation instrument. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) The main topic of this paper is high-resolution image fusion. The techniques used to merge high spatial resolution panchromatic images with high spectral resolution multispectral images are described. The most commonly used image fusion methods that work on the principle of component substitution (intensity-hue-saturation method (ms), Brovey transform (bt), and multiplicative method (multi)) have been applied to Ikonos, QuickBird, Landsat, and aerial orthophoto images. Visual comparison, histogram analyses, correlation coefficients, and difference images were used in order to analyze the spectral and spatial qualities of the fused images. It was discovered that for preserving spectral characteristics, one needs a high level of similarity between the panchromatic image and the respective multispectral intensity. In order to achieve this, spectral sensitivity of multispectral and panchromatic data was performed, and digital values in individual bands have been modified before fusion. It has also been determined that spatial resolution is best preserved in the event of an unchanged input panchromatic image. [Termes IGN] stéréoscopieRésumé : (Auteur) HRS instrument on board of SPOT 5 allows acquisition of stereoscopic pairs in a single pass. Its final purpose is to provide the worldwide database of Digital Terrain Models and Orthoimages, called ReferenceSD®, with no use of ground control points and a horizontal location specified as 16 m for 90% of the points. The stake is not only to fulfil the HRS' location specification of 50 m in root mean square but to obtain a location performance as best as possible and to check that the instrument can cope with the realisation of the ReferenceSD® database. That's why HRS has been the subject of specific attention even after the end of SPOT 5 in-flight commissioning phase.
This comprehensive paper summarizes the steps jointly taken by CNES, IGN, Spot Image and HRS end-users to calibrate, monitor and validate the HRS image accuracy as well as the accuracy of the final DEM products. First, an overview of HRS on SPOT 5 will be given, with a specific attention paid to the instrument geometry and rigorous sensor model available through ancillary data given with the images. Then, methods and means used by the French Space Agency (CNES) and the French Mapping Agency (IGN) to reach the objectives will be described and the final accuracy reached will be given. It concems: 1-- calibration and monitoring of the HRS geometrical parameters, and the several on board improvements brought to the satellite by CNES to improve the location accuracy at the single pair level (i.e. no tie points nor ground control points used); 2-- the HRS block adjustment model calibration and the evaluation performed by IGN at the stereo pair level (i.e with tie points used within the pair) and block level (with tie points used between different HRS strips). Finally, the article deals with several comparisons of HRS DEM's against available DEMs (eg. SRTM DTED level 2) and also reviews various evaluations of the HRS and the ReferenceSD® products made by independent users against ground truth issued from field measurements or high quality/high scale geodata. [Termes IGN] satellite agileRésumé : (Auteur) Pleiades is a high-resolution optical Earth observation system developed by the French National Space Agency CNES, for civilian and militarian users. It will operate in 2008-2009 two agile satellites with very high geometric accuracy since latest budgets show that the system could reach, after in-flight commissioning, an absolute location performance better than the current Pleiades specifications set at 12m for 90% of images. Given this level of accuracy, the geometric calibration needs the use of a very high planimetric and altimetric accurate reference data which is obtained with heavy and costly means: generally, only one or two areas are equipped, and complete calibration could take several months after launch. In order to gain time, a first "coarse" calibration will be performed using ground control points and an accurate physical model of the instrument. This first step should allow the system to reach its specifications more quickly. This paper presents the global methodology planned to calibrate the geometric location model. It also highlight the need of an accurate GCP data base for this treatment and for periodic assessment of the location budget.
