[Termes IGN] restitutionRésumé : (Auteur) GPS aided inertial navigation systems have been available for commercial mapping applications for approximately a decade, pioneered by Canadian-based Applanix Corporation. [...] The impact on the aerial suvey and remote sensing industry has brought about a re-assessment of traditional photogrammetric methodology and the potential elimination of two fundamental mapping component, the ground control survey and corresponding aerotriangulation process. By merging the GPS and inertial navigation technologies, accurate position and orientation of the airborne imaging sensor, with respect to the Earth, can be determined directly. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Land cover mapping is perhaps the most important application of remote sensing data. The abundance of mixed pixels (representing uncertainties in class allocation), particularly in coarse spatial resolution images, has always been known to lead to difficulties in producing accurate land cover classifications. Soft classification methods may help in quantifying uncertainties in areas of transition between various types of land cover. This study aims to estimate and accommodate uncertainties in all stages of a supervised classification process (i.e. training, allocation and testing) so as to produce accurate and meaningful land cover classifications. Three soft classification methods have been used-a probabilistic maximum likelihood classifier and the two classifiers based on fuzzy set theory (fuzzy (c-means and possibilistic c-means). Uncertainty and accuracy measures based on a fuzzy error matrix have been adopted to evaluate each classifier. All of the classifiers show an increase in classification accuracy when uncertainty is appropriately accounted for in all stages of the supervised classification. In particular, the possibilistic c-means classifier produced the highest map and individual class accuracy and has been found to be more robust to the existence of uncertainties in the datasets. The approach suggested in this paper can be used to generate accurate land cover maps, even in the presence of uncertainties in the form of mixed pixels in remote sensing images. [Termes IGN] résolution d'ambiguïtéRésumé : (Editeur) The GPS carrier-phase observable is more than 100 times more precise than the code-based pseudorange observable. Unfortunatly, it is also ambigous. If we want to use the carrier phase as a range measurement in positioning or navigation, we must account somehow for the unknown integer number of cycles or turns of phase in the initial measurement when a GPS receiver locks onto satellite's L1 or L2 signal carrier. Mathematicians, scientists and engineering have developed clever techniques for helping these integer ambiguities either in real time or in post-processing collected data. However, the success of these techniques in correctly determining the ambiguities depends on several factors including wether a point or relative positioning technique is employed, the length of the baseline in relative positioning, and how well a variety of errors afflicting the measurements can be mitigated. One source of such errors is the ionosphere. In this month's column, we examine how ionospheric modeling helps in the resolution of carrier-phase ambiguities and how the rate of success in correctly determining the ambiguities will be much improved when GPS observations are combined with those of the future Gallileo system.
