[Termes IGN] radar pénétrant GPRRésumé : (Auteur) We consider the problem of detecting and locating subsurface objects by using a maneuvering array that receives scattered seismic surface waves. We demonstrate an adaptive system that moves an array of receivers according to an optimal positioning algorithm that is based on the theory of optimal experiments. The goal is to minimize the number of distinct measurements (array movements) needed to localize objects such as buried landmines. The adaptive localization algorithm has been tested using data collected in a laboratory facility. The performance of the algorithm is exhibited for cases with one or two targets and in the presence of common types of clutter such as rocks in the soil. Results are also shown for a case where the propagation properties of the medium vary spatially. In these tests, the landmines were located using three or four array movements. It is envisioned that future systems could incorporate this new method into a portable mobile mine-location system. [Termes IGN] teneur en eau de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) with a suspended 1 GHz horn antenna was deployed for measurement of soil water contents and crop canopy properties over bare and electrically terminating surfaces. Surface reflection (SR) and signal propagation times (PT) were used to independently determine dielectric permittivity and water content of soil and canopy. Measured surface reflection coefficients progressively decreased with increasing canopy biomass according to Beer-Lambert type relationships. In contrast, PT measurements remained unaffected by canopy, and hence provided an accurate account of soil water content dynamics. Immediately after canopy removal, SR-based soil water content measurements were in close agreement with PT values. Canopy dielectric properties were inferred from canopy water contents (ec-CWC) and canopy propagation times (ec-CPT). Distinct canopy reflections were correlated with key canopy biophysical parameters. The study demonstrates the usefulness of a horn antenna GPR for characterization of vegetation canopy scattering, and for subcanopy water content measurements within a well-defined footprint, thereby offering a potential for calibration and verification of radar data collected from air- and spacebome platforms. From the different contributions made during this symposium it becomes clear that, after a set of new sensors like Envisat, Ikonos, Quickbird, ASTER, MODIS ... became operational, now also the applications have reached the operational stage. The development of adapted methodologies to this new generation of sensors needs a couple of years before entering the application stage.
It is also clear that Very High Resolution data has entered definitively the remote sensing applications "forum", with the emphasis on studies dealing with resolutions adapted to new application areas, urban structures for example, something which was not possible in the past since the resolutions were not appropriate. Many contributions illustrate the use of sensors with a better and finer spectral resolution. Environmental protection, a new field of application was also the theme of several contributions.
It must be started, nevertheless, that for the moment radar images remain the inherent tool for certain applications and Landsat TM and ETM+ for optical remote sensing, remain the "work horses". The recent difficulties with the Landcast sensor, however, may change this part of the "remote sensing landscape". But other sensors with others and sometimes more possibilities are ready to take over.
