[Termes IGN] station GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) The global reference frame realizations (as ITRFyy) (International Terrestrial Reference Frame), the corresponding IGSyy (International GNSS Service) and their regional densification solutions are published as SSC (Set of Station Coordinates and velocities) and SINEX files, where each of the included stations are treated in the same way and the coordinates refer to a single common epoch. Although these realizations are considered the actually best solution, it does not mean that all involved stations have the same level of reliability. The only product quality indicators are the uncertainties rendered to the coordinates and velocities, therefore the users must pay special regard to avoid distortions in the actual applications. In this paper, the separation and categorization of the reference stations is proposed. The categorization is based on the analysis of series of consecutive cumulative solution, where the convergence of the velocity estimates is considered as main categorization criteria. Class_A includes the reliable fiducial stations with long observation series (at least one years of recent data) and "consolidated" velocity parameters. Class_B mostly covers young sites, which not yet fulfilling the criteria for being fiducial station, and those may only be used for solution control. The Class_B stations also have high quality cumulative coordinates, referred to the epoch of minimum variance, which is different at each site, however no velocities are published. The main target of the proposed categorization/separation is not the exclusion of any reference sites, rather the estimation of the optimal (earliest) epoch for a recently installed stations, from when it can be used as geodetic reference. The categorization criteria and the related terms are described and discussed in the paper. This approach is successfully implemented for the EPN (EUREF Permanent Network). We found that as of January 2010 about 80% of the EPN stations can be considered as Class_A, and more than 50, recently installed stations are still not offered as fiducial for reference frame applications. The categorization is revised in each 15 weeks, and these stations are moved to Class_A, when they fulfilling the respective criteria. The presented approach is straightforward and can easily be extended both to global and national long term GNSS solutions. [Termes IGN] station de référenceRésumé : (Auteur) We apply global optimization in order to optimize the referencing (and consequently the stability) of the Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP) with respect to ITRF2005. These EOP are derived at a daily sampling from SLR data, simultaneously with weekly station positions. The EOP referencing is carried out with minimum constraints applied weekly to the three rotations and over core station networks. Our approach is based on a multi objective genetic algorithm, a particular stochastic global optimization method, the reference system effects being the objectives to minimize. We thus use rigorous criteria for the optimal weekly core station selection. The results evidence an improvement of 10% of the stability for Polar Motion (PM) series in comparison to the results obtained with the network specially designed for EOP referencing by the Analysis Working Group of the International Laser Ranging Service. This improvement of nearly 25 ?as represents 50% of the current precision of the IERS 05 C04 PM reference series. We also test the possibility of averaging the weekly networks provided by our algorithm (the Genetically Modified Networks—GMN) over the whole time period. Although the dynamical nature of the GMN is clearly a key point of their success, we can derive such a global mean core network, which could be useful for practical applications regarding EOP referencing. Using this latter core network moreover provides more stable EOP series than the conventional network does. [Termes IGN] VanuatuRésumé : (auteur) During the past few decades, satellite altimetry has brought tremendous new knowledge about the spatial and temporal variations of sea surface heights over the Earth’s oceans. However, the precision is limited over short wavelengths and in coastal areas, and other methods such as kinematic GPS may be needed to fill in this information. We present kinematic GPS work aimed at mapping the sea surface height, with special attention to the precision one can expect. Active marine subduction zones, like the Vanuatu archipelago, may present short wavelength, high amplitude undulations of the sea surface height that are difficult to map with satellite altimetry. This paper presents the methodology used around Santo Island, in Vanuatu, to obtain a well-resolved local sea surface map with a precision of 5–15 cm limited by the sea conditions and the distance from the coastal reference station. We present the results of three campaigns in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Careful observation of the ship behaviour along the surveys as well as simultaneous recording of the ship attitude variations is mandatory to obtain reliable results. We show that the ship GPS antenna height varies with the ship’s velocity and we suggest a method to correct this effect. The final precision is estimated using the crossover differences method. [Termes IGN] station de référenceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, different approaches to tie a GNSS network to a conventional reference frame, using minimal constraints have been investigated. We created and analysed regional (European) and global cumulative solutions, used both the IGS05 and ITRF2005 as datum, tested different sets of transformation parameters in the minimal constraints, and used different sets of reference stations for the datum definition. Due to the correlation of the Helmert parameters in a regional network, each of the standard geocentric approaches originally dedicated to tie global networks to a reference frame, has shown deficiencies. It was demonstrated that regional solutions can show biases (up to the cm-level) with respect to each other and we conclude that at the regional level, the choice between the IGS05 or ITRF2005, the selection of the reference station set and the number of parameters used to apply the minimal constraints is crucial. In comparison, global solutions are much more stable and agree within the 2 mm-level.
