[Termes IGN] reconnaissance facialeRésumé : (auteur) The recognition of facial gestures and expressions in image sequences is an important and challenging problem. Most of the existing methods adopt the following paradigm. First, facial actions/features are retrieved from the images, then the facial expression is recognized based on the retrieved temporal parameters. In contrast to this mainstream approach, this paper introduces a new approach allowing the simultaneous retrieval of facial actions and expression using a particle filter adopting multi-class dynamics that are conditioned on the expression. For each frame in the video sequence, our approach is split into two consecutive stages. In the first stage, the 3D head pose is retrieved using a deterministic registration technique based on Online Appearance Models. In the second stage, the facial actions as well as the facial expression are simultaneously retrieved using a stochastic framework based on second-order Markov chains. The proposed fast scheme is either as robust as, or more robust than existing ones in a number of respects. We describe extensive experiments and provide evaluations of performance to show the feasibility and robustness of the proposed approach. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) An approach for tree species classification in urban areas from high resolution colour infrared (CIR) aerial images and the corresponding Digital Surface Model (DSM) is described in this paper. The proposed method is a supervised classification one based on a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. Texture features from the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) are computed to form feature vectors for both per-pixel and per-region classification approaches. The two approaches are presented and results obtained are evaluated and compared both against each other and also against a manual defined ground truth. To perform tree species classification on highdensity urban area images, trees must previously be segmented into individual objects. All intermediary methods developed to segment individual trees will also be shortly described. Tree parameters (height, crown diameter) are estimated from the DSM. These parameters together with the tree species information are used for a 3D realistic modelling of the trees in urban environments. Results of the described system are presented for a typical scene. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we address the dynamic recognition of basic facial expressions. We introduce a view- and texture independent schemes that exploits facial action parameters estimated by an appearance-based 3D face tracker. We represent the learned facial actions associated with different facial expressions by time series. Furthermore, we compare this dynamic scheme with a static one and show that the former performs better than the latter. We provide evaluations of performance using several classification schemes. With the proposed scheme, we developed an application for social robotics, in which an AIBO is mirroring the facial expression recognized. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) While many data sets carry geographic and temporal references, our ability to analyze these datasets lags behind our ability to collect them because of the challenges posed by both data complexity and tool scalability issues. This study develops a visual analytics approach that leverages human expertise with visual, computational, and cartographic methods to support the application of visual analytics to relatively large spatio-temporal, multivariate data sets. We develop and apply a variety of methods for data clustering, pattern searching, information visualization, and synthesis. By combining both human and machine strengths, this approach has a better chance to discover novel, relevant, and potentially useful information that is difficult to detect by any of the methods used in isolation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by applying the Visual Inquiry Toolkit we developed to analyze a data set containing geographically referenced, time-varying and multivariate data for U.S. technology industries.
