The proliferation of photosynthetic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in anoxic water make the water color becomes opaque and turbid until milky. An identification method using 665 nm, 709 nm and 754 nm bands of Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) sensor is proposed to identify the total anoxic water filled by SOB. The reflectance of the SOB layer is described as a specific reflectance relating to the SOB concentration. The results show that SOB contaminated water during the anoxic crisis can be quantitatively remote sensed by multispectral sensor. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Oil exploration and contamination monitoring remain limited in regions covered by vegetation. Natural seepages and oil leakages due to facility failures are often masked by the foliage, making ineffective the current technologies used for detecting crude oil and petroleum products. However, the exposure of vegetation to oil affects its health and, consequently, its optical properties in the [400:2500] nm domain. This suggest being able to detect seepages and leakages indirectly, by analyzing vegetation health through its spectral reflectance. Based on this assumption, this thesis evaluates the potential of airborne hyperspectral imagery with high spatial resolution for detecting and quantifying oil contamination in vegetated regions. To achieve this, a three-step multiscale approach was adopted. The first step aimed at developing a method for detecting and characterizing the contamination under controlled conditions, by exploiting the optical properties of Rubus fruticosus L. The proposed method combines 14 vegetation indices in classification and allows detecting various oil contaminants accurately, from leaf to canopy scale. Its use under natural conditions was validated on a contaminated mud pit colonized by the same species. During the second step, a method for quantifying total petroleum hydrocarbons, based on inverting the PROSPECT model, was developed. The method exploits the pigment content of leaves, estimated from their spectral signature, for predicting the level of hydrocarbon contamination in soils accurately. The last step of the approach demonstrated the robustness of the two methods using airborne imagery. They proved performing for detecting and quantifying mud pit contamination. Another method of quantification, based on multiple regression, was proposed. At the end of this thesis, the three methods proposed were validated for use both on the field, at leaf and canopy scales, and on airborne hyperspectral images with high spatial resolution. Their performances depend however on the species, the season and the level of soil contamination. A similar approach was conducted under tropical conditions, allowing the development of a method for quantifying the contamination adapted to this context. In a perspective of operational use, an important effort is still required for extending the scope of the methods to other contexts and for anticipating their use on satellite- and drone-embedded hyperspectral sensors. Finally, the contribution of active remote sensing (radar and LiDAR) should be considered in further research, in order to overcome some of the limits specific to passive optical remote sensing. [Termes IGN] teneur en eau de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Polarization orientation angle (POA) is an important parameter of polarimetric radar scattering from slopes in mountainous region. It is known that surface tilted in azimuth direction and buildings not aligned in the along-track direction induce polarization orientation shifts. Earlier research has established orientation angle as a function of radar imaging geometry and surface slopes, and that POA estimation can be derived from polarimetric radar data using circular polarization. Besides these, polarimetric scattering from steep slopes and its relation to POA remain not well understood. In this paper, we address these issues by adopting a tilted surface model based on Bragg scattering. We have found that, as the azimuthal slope increases, |VV| decreases at a faster rate than |HH|, they become equal, when POA is ±45°, and |HH| > |VV| afterward. In other words, the Pauli component, |HH-VV| reduced to zero at POA = ± 45°, and the typical Bragg scattering characteristics of |VV| > |HH| does not apply when steep slope is present inducing |POA| > 45°. Furthermore, the cross-pol |HV| does not always increase with azimuth slope but also reaches a maximum then decreases to zero. In addition, we investigate the effect of soil moisture on polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) scattering characteristics of steep terrain and the effect of vegetation over surface on POA estimation. The latter is demonstrated with NASA/JPL TOPSAR L-band PolSAR data and C-band InSAR data. Another significance of this paper is that it provides a direct and rigorous derivation of POA equations. The earlier version was derived from a different concept. A wide range of features, including the spectral reflectance, vegetation indices (VIs), textural features based on the grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and textural features based on geostatistical semivariogram (GST) were extracted for classification, and their performance was evaluated with the RF variable importance measures. Results showed that the best segmentation quality was achieved using the SPOT image acquired in September, with a scale parameter of 40. The spectral reflectance and the GST had a stronger contribution to crop classification than the VIs and GLCM textures. A subset of 60 features was selected using the RF-based feature selection (FS) method, and in this subset, the near-infrared reflectance and the image acquired in August (jointing and heading stages) were found to be the best for crop classification. Note de contenu : Introduction générale
