[Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (auteur) The inherent uncertainty of geospatial data has engendered a critical research agenda addressing all facets of uncertainty visualization due to the communicative efficiency of graphical representation. To organize this broad research area, we have reviewed literature on geospatial uncertainty visualization and systematically and iteratively classified research in this field. Upon creating a classification, we developed several visual summaries over time, refining the classification and subsequent graphic as new relevant topics emerged. This visual summary extends current existing approaches to taxonomies by allowing users a quick visual overview of relevant topics in a research area at a glance. For each research paper on uncertainty visualization, this classification can be used to visually represent which domains are covered. In order to ensure that the visual summary approach and the corresponding domains developed in this article can be used reliably, we performed an inter-rater agreement task. The high agreement reveals that the domains in the classification that were identified are intuitive and can lead to objective, reproducible classifications (visual summaries) of research papers. In future research, we plan to refine the visual classification/summary approach by providing guided classification via a web interface to visually classify the entire body of literature on geospatial uncertainty visualization and visually explore any trends in research topics, how they have changed over the years, and identify sparser topics that still need to be addressed. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Some map users still experience difficulties when attempting to route plan, navigate and/or wayfind. This paper provides information on the outcomes of a research project that aims to identify the nature of the difficulties/challenges these users experience. The paper draws on findings from studies of strategies used by novice and experienced map users, and users with poor spatial abilities, to identify the skills that those with poor spatial abilities or with little map reading experience lack. Data were collected using Tobii Pro Glasses 2 hardware and associated software. Fourteen participants walked between two predetermined locations while wearing eye-tracking glasses and speaking their thoughts aloud. The data collected in this study were analysed using quantitative and qualitative approaches. Analysis of the results shows three key findings for this particular group: looking at the map incessantly led to missed environmental cues; street names were not labelled at decision-making points on the map; and some individuals having poor spatial abilities prefer small-scale landmarks, for example, buildings with numbers to locate themselves, as opposed to using road names or larger landmarks. We argue that by considering these findings, map designs could be adjusted to meet the needs of map users with poor spatial abilities. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Digital three-dimensional (3D) cartography environments provide new ways of landscape visualization and topographic interpretation: digital terrain modeling (DTM) is added to the traditional cartographic technique, where relief interpretation skill is needed to interpret 3D topographic information from 2D representations. The emergence of augmented reality (AR) technology for DTM representation offers a new way to develop map-reading skills. It is in the representation of the landforms (hills, dunes, depths, valleys, mountains, shapes, slopes, and elevations) where the AR allows a new way to interact with the landscape representation. Once AR technology is combined with tablet computers, the manipulation of DTM can be done by finger gestures. This paper analyzes the potential of AR as an innovative teaching tool to improve relief interpretation skill based on the results of a workshop with 73 engineering students from La Laguna University, Spain. Participants performed exercises with 2D traditional techniques of relief representation and with AR. To compare the effect with and without AR, another group of 22 students conducted the workshop with only 2D relief representations. The gain was significantly better with the AR group; students who did not use AR had also a significantly better result, but their scores were still lower. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Traditional cartography, by its methodological and cultural foundations, allows for the creation of representations shaped by standard metrical and semiological principles. Nevertheless, expressivity is often neglected and can proved to be absent from these visual representations. Alternative portrayal of topology can be provided. Hybrid representations can be also proposed to express individual perception or experience of any space. In that sense, these novel cartographic means usually labelled sensitive maps, emotional maps or cognitive maps, embody distinct points-of-view such as individual perception. Information related to perception and sentiments is inherently ambiguous, imprecise and barely quantifiable because of the nature of human experiences. Indeed, the perception of a person can be influenced by his/her physical capabilities, and his/her senses. It is thus difficult to formalize this kind of information and project it onto a map. In this context, our talk will describe an experiment with students newly arrived in Paris or its region, related to their experience of discovering their living place in a diachronic perspective. Each student is aimed to build sensitive maps representing a targeted geographical space in the way it is perceived. Similar experiments have led to non-conventional mapping productions, but without focusing on the creation process of sensitive maps over time which we intend to study. A wider perspective of this work could be the reuse of that experiment by public policies and associations in the Paris region for urban planning, tourism, reception of foreign students, or for comparing with other cities.
