[Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) In this work, we investigate the effectiveness of different types of visibility models for use within location-based services. This article outlines the methodology and results for our experiments, which were designed to understand the accuracy and effects of model choices for mobile visibility querying. Harnessing a novel mobile media consumption and authoring application called Zapp, the levels of accuracy of various digital surface representations used by a line of sight visibility algorithm are extensively examined by statistically assessing randomly sampled viewing sites across the 1 km2 study area, in relation to points of interest (POI) across the University of Nottingham campus. Testing was carried out on three different surface models derived from 0.5 m LiDAR data by visiting physical sites on each surface model with 14 random point of interest masks being viewed from between 10 and 16 different locations, totalling 190 data points. Each site was ground-truthed by determining whether a given POI could be seen by the user and could also be identified by the mobile device. Our experiments in a semi-urban area show that choice of surface model has important implications for mobile applications that utilize visibility in geospatial query operations. [Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (Auteur) In the age of Big Data, the widespread use of location-awareness technologies has made it possible to collect spatio-temporal interaction data for analyzing flow patterns in both physical space and cyberspace. This research attempts to explore and interpret patterns embedded in the network of phone-call interaction and the network of phone-users’ movements, by considering the geographical context of mobile phone cells. We adopt an agglomerative clustering algorithm based on a Newman-Girvan modularity metric and propose an alternative modularity function incorporating a gravity model to discover the clustering structures of spatial-interaction communities using a mobile phone dataset from one week in a city in China. The results verify the distance decay effect and spatial continuity that control the process of partitioning phone-call interaction, which indicates that people tend to communicate within a spatial-proximity community. Furthermore, we discover that a high correlation exists between phone-users’ movements in physical space and phone-call interaction in cyberspace. Our approach presents a combined qualitative-quantitative framework to identify clusters and interaction patterns, and explains how geographical context influences communities of callers and receivers. The findings of this empirical study are valuable for urban structure studies as well as for the detection of communities in spatial networks. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Although commercial Web mapping is popular now, illustrated maps are widely used in print media and have advantages. The immeasurable distortions of illustrated maps create difficulties when applying them in location-based services. Based on previous research, the authors propose an improved framework for supporting illustrated maps to be integrated with GPS functions in smartphones, and positioning methods are discussed. Mobile tools and applications have been developed with the purpose of making it easy to create and use digital content based on illustrated maps for walking tours. The usability and effectiveness were tested in experiments and practical use.
