[Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (auteur) We further developed a space–time Kalman approach to investigate time-fixed and time-variable signals in vertical land motion (VLM) and residual altimeter systematic errors around the Australian coast, through combining multi-mission absolute sea-level (ASL), relative sea-level from tide gauges (TGs) and Global Positioning System (GPS) height time series. Our results confirmed coastal subsidence in broad agreement with GPS velocities and unexplained by glacial isostatic adjustment alone. VLM determined at individual TGs differs from spatially interpolated GPS velocities by up to ~ 1.5 mm/year, yielding a ~ 40% reduction in RMSE of geographic ASL variability at TGs around Australia. Our mission-specific altimeter error estimates are small but significant (typically within ~ ± 0.5–1.0 mm/year), with negligible effect on the average ASL rate. Our circum-Australia ASL rate is higher than previous results, suggesting an acceleration in the ~ 27-year time series. Analysis of the time-variability of altimeter errors confirmed stability for most missions except for Jason-2 with an anomaly reaching ~ 2.8 mm/year in the first ~ 3.5 years of operation, supported by analysis from the Bass Strait altimeter validation facility. Data predominantly from the reference missions and located well off narrow shelf regions was shown to bias results by as much as ~ 0.5 mm/year and highlights that residual oceanographic signals remain a fundamental limitation. Incorporating non-reference-mission measurements well on the shelf helped to mitigate this effect. Comparing stacked nonlinear VLM estimates and altimeter systematic errors with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation shows weak correlation and suggests our approach improves the ability to explore nonlinear localized signals and is suitable for other regional- and global-scale studies. [Termes IGN] topométrie de précisionRésumé : (auteur) Structural health monitoring (SHM) based on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) is an interesting solution to provide absolute positions at different locations of a structure in a global reference frame. In particular, low-cost GNSS stations for large-scale bridge monitoring have gained increasing attention these last years because recent experiments showed the ability to achieve a subcentimeter accuracy for continuous monitoring with adequate combinations of antennas and receivers. Technical solutions now allow displacement monitoring of long bridges with a cost-effective deployment of GNSS sensing networks. In particular, the redundancy of observations within the GNSS network with various levels of correlations between the GNSS time series makes such monitoring solution a good candidate for anomaly detection based on machine learning models, using several predictive models for each sensor (based on environmental conditions, or other sensors as input data). This strategy is investigated in this paper based on GNSS time series, and an anomaly indicator is proposed to detect and locate anomalous structural behavior. The proposed concepts are applied to a cable-stayed bridge for illustration, and the comparison between multiple tools highlights recurrent neural networks (RNN) as an effective regression tool. Coupling this tool with the proposed anomaly detection strategy enables one to identify and localize both real and simulated anomalies in the considered data set. [Vedettes matières IGN] Traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (auteur) People are fascinated today more than ever by the polar regions of the Earth. One reason for this is that wide expanses of the Arctic and Antarctic have not been explored and are therefore still viewed as frontier regions. Another is that they both have very diverse histories with regard to their origins and ice formation. Their numerous aspects still pose many puzzles for science today. The regions of the Earth designated as polar are those areas located between the North or South Pole and the Arctic or Antarctic Circles, respectively. The northern polar region, called the Arctic, encompasses the Arctic Ocean and a portion of some surrounding land masses. The southern polar region, called the Antarctic, contains the continent of Antarctica and areas of the surrounding Southern Ocean. In this paper three tests (2000, 2010 and 2021) of continuous GNSS data recorded by 8 permanent International GPS Service (IGS) stations in both Polar Regions have been processed by using CSRS-PPP Software for geodetic networks. The results also show that all GNSS provide good visibility with low elevation angles, whereas with high elevation angles, which might be needed due to natural barriers, the GLONASS and other satellites provides the highest number of visible satellites. Consequently, the mean motion of the study area was found approximately 7–15 cm for horizontal components (X–Y) and 6 cm for vertical components (Ellipsoidal Height) on the eight IGS points in the both poles. [Vedettes matières IGN] Traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (auteur) Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) site coordinate time series provides essential data for geodynamic and geophysical studies, realisation of a regional or global geodetic reference frames, and crustal deformation research. The coordinate time series has been conventionally modelled by least squares (LS) fitting with harmonic functions, alongside many other analysis methods. As a key limitation, the traditional modelling approaches simply use the functions of time variable, despite good knowledge of various underlying physical mechanisms responsible for the site displacements. This paper examines the use of machine learning (ML) models to reflect the effects or residential effects of physical variables related to Sun and the Moon ephemerides, polar motion, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and hydrology on the site displacements. To form the ML problem, these variables are constructed as the input vector of each ML training sample, while the vertical displacement of a GNSS site is regarded as the output value. In the evaluation experiments, three ML approaches, namely the gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) approach, long short-term memory (LSTM) approach, and support vector machine (SVM) approach, are introduced and evaluated with the time series datasets collected from 9 GNSS sites over the period of 13 years. The results indicate that all three approaches achieve similar fitting precision in the range of 3–5 mm in the vertical displacement component, which is an improvement in over 30% with respect to the traditional LS fitting precision in the range of 4–7 mm. The prediction of the vertical time series with the three ML approaches shows the precision in the range of 4–7 mm over the future 24- month period. The results also indicate the relative importance of different physical features causing the displacements of each site. Overall, ML approaches demonstrate better performance and effectiveness in modelling and prediction of GNSS time series, thus impacting maintenance of geodetic reference frames, geodynamics, geophysics, and crustal deformation analysis. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) The effects of drought on tree mortality at forest stands are not completely understood. For assessing their water supply, knowledge of the small-scale distribution of soil moisture as well as its temporal changes is a key issue in an era of climate change. However, traditional methods like taking soil samples or installing data loggers solely collect parameters of a single point or of a small soil volume. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a suitable method for monitoring soil moisture changes and has rarely been used in forests. This method was applied at two forest sites in Bavaria, Germany to obtain high-resolution data of temporal soil moisture variations. Geoelectrical measurements (2D and 3D) were conducted at both sites over several years (2015–2018/2020) and compared with soil moisture data (matric potential or volumetric water content) for the monitoring plots. The greatest variations in resistivity values that highly correlate with soil moisture data were found in the main rooting zone. Using the ERT data, temporal trends could be tracked in several dimensions, such as the interannual increase in the depth of influence from drought events and their duration, as well as rising resistivity values going along with decreasing soil moisture. The results reveal that resistivity changes are a good proxy for seasonal and interannual soil moisture variations. Therefore, 2D- and 3D-ERT are recommended as comparatively non-laborious methods for small-spatial scale monitoring of soil moisture changes in the main rooting zone and the underlying subsurface of forested sites. Higher spatial and temporal resolution allows a better understanding of the water supply for trees, especially in times of drought.
