[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Large fractions of human-altered lands are working landscapes where people and nature interact to balance social, economic, and ecological needs. Achieving these sustainability goals requires tracking human footprints and landscape disturbance at fine scales over time—an effort facilitated by remote sensing but still under development. Here, we report a satellite time-series analysis approach to detecting fine-scale human disturbances in an Ohio watershed dominated by forests and pastures but with diverse small-scale industrial activities such as hydraulic fracturing (HF) and surface mining. We leveraged Google Earth Engine to stack decades of Landsat images and explored the effectiveness of a fuzzy change detection algorithm called the Bayesian Estimator of Abrupt change, Seasonality, and Trend (BEAST) to capture fine-scale disturbances. BEAST is an ensemble method, capable of estimating changepoints probabilistically and identifying sub-pixel disturbances. We found the algorithm can successfully capture the patterns and timings of small-scale disturbances, such as grazing, agriculture management, coal mining, HF, and right-of-ways for gas and power lines, many of which were not captured in the annual land cover maps from Cropland Data Layers—one of the most widely used classification-based land dynamics products in the US. For example, BEAST could detect the initial HF wellpad construction within 60 days of the registered drilling dates on 88.2% of the sites. The wellpad footprints were small, disturbing only 0.24% of the watershed in area, which was dwarfed by other activities (e.g., right-of-ways of utility transmission lines). Together, these known activities have disturbed 9.7% of the watershed from the year 2000 to 2017 with evergeen forests being the most affected land cover. This study provides empirical evidence on the effectiveness and reliability of BEAST for changepoint detection as well as its capability to detect disturbances from satellite images at sub-pixel levels and also documents the value of Google Earth Engine and satellite time-series imaging for monitoring human activities in complex working landscapes. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Multispectral satellite imagery is the primary data source for monitoring land cover change and characterizing land cover globally. However, the consistency of land cover monitoring is limited by the spatial and temporal resolutions of the acquired satellite images. The public availability of daily high-resolution images is still scarce. This paper aims to fill this gap by proposing a novel spatiotemporal fusion method to enhance daily low spatial resolution land cover mapping using a weakly supervised deep convolutional neural network. We merge Sentinel images and moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS )-derived thematic land cover maps under the application background of massive remote sensing data and the large spatial resolution gaps between MODIS data and Sentinel images. The neural network training was conducted on the public data set SEN12MS, while the validation and testing used ground truth data from the 2020 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society data fusion contest. The proposed data fusion method shows that the synthesized land cover map has significantly higher spatial resolution than the corresponding MODIS-derived land cover map. The ensemble approach can be implemented for generating high-resolution time series of satellite images by fusing fine images from Sentinel-1 and -2 and daily coarse images from MODIS. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) A recent development in Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology is integrating multiple SAR satellite data to dynamically extract ground features. This paper addresses two relevant challenges: identification of common ground targets from different SAR datasets in space, and concatenation of time series when dealing with temporal dynamics. To address the first challenge, we describe the geolocation uncertainty of InSAR measurements as a three-dimensional error ellipsoid. The points, among InSAR measurements, which have error ellipsoids with a positive cross volume are identified as tie-point pairs representing common ground objects from multiple SAR datasets. The cross volumes are calculated using Monte Carlo methods and serve as weights to achieve the equivalent deformation time series. To address the second challenge, the deformation time series model for each tie-point pair is estimated using probabilistic methods, where potential deformation models are efficiently tested and evaluated. As an application, we integrated two Radarsat-2 datasets in Standard and Extra-Fine modes to map the subsidence of the west of the Netherlands between 2010 and 2017. We identified 18128 tie-point pairs, 5 intersection types of error ellipsoids, 5 deformation models, and constructed their long-term deformation time series. The detected maximum mean subsidence velocity in Line-Of-Sight direction is up to 15 . We conclude that our method removes limitations that exist in single-viewing-geometry SAR when integrating multiple SAR data. In particular, the proposed time-series modeling method is useful to achieve a long-term deformation time series of multiple datasets. [Termes IGN] SvalbardRésumé : (auteur) Reliable and accurate mapping of snow cover are essential in applications such as water resource management, hazard forecasting, calibration and validation of hydrological models and climate impact assessments. Optical remote sensing has been utilized as a tool for snow cover monitoring over the last several decades. However, consistent long-term monitoring of snow cover can be challenging due to differences in spatial resolution and retrieval algorithms of the different generations of satellite-based sensors. Snow models represent a complementary tool to remote sensing for snow cover monitoring, being able to fill in temporal and spatial data gaps where a lack of observations exist. This study utilized three optical remote sensing datasets and two snow models with overlapping periods of data coverage to investigate the similarities and discrepancies in snow cover estimates over Nordenskiöld Land in central Svalbard. High-resolution Sentinel-2 observations were utilized to calibrate a 20-year MODIS snow cover dataset that was subsequently used to correct snow cover fraction estimates made by the lower resolution AVHRR instrument and snow model datasets. A consistent overestimation of snow cover fraction by the lower resolution datasets was found, as well as estimates of the first snow-free day (FSFD) that were, on average, 10–15 days later when compared with the baseline MODIS estimates. Correction of the AVHRR time series produced a significantly slower decadal change in the land-averaged FSFD, indicating that caution should be exercised when interpreting climate-related trends from earlier lower resolution observations. Substantial differences in the dynamic characteristics of snow cover in early autumn were also present between the remote sensing and snow model datasets, which need to be investigated separately. This work demonstrates that the consistency of earlier low spatial resolution snow cover datasets can be improved by using current-day higher resolution datasets. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (auteur) The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was used to delineate potential water suppliers west of the Arabian Peninsula. Time series NDVI data extracted from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer NDVI product were used to develop a robust estimate of rainstorm frequency and intensity. A total of 216 NDVI images were acquired between February 2000 and January 2018 to carry out this investigation. As NDVI values of negative records correspond to water, it was possible to address and delineate the occurrence and duration of temporal ponded water. Results showed that at least 7 locations are potential to harvest water from flashfloods. Some locations witnessed 10, 11 and 13 rainstorms and ponding of water ranged from 1 to 20 months. These locations, if properly managed, could sustain a fresh water resource for local uses. The study demonstrates that NDVI time series curves could help identify the time/duration of previous rainstorms.
