[Termes IGN] Web Feature ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Interoperability is a key concept concerning the handling of spatial data. Existing geodata are captured, analysed, and administrated in various distributed systems. It is not reasonable to capture new datasets for every application. In fact, the use of existing datasets must be possible in a shared way. The need for sharing heterogeneous and distributed data is particularly demonstrated in active developments towards Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) as well as Geo-Portals in the internet. First, sharing of heterogeneous data in the context of cross-border SDI leads to new knowledge, and second, additional benefit can be achieved.
Data-sharing can be realised by applying interoperability methods. In order to reach this goal, a number of approaches, that are partially based on each other, are at hand. The spectrum reaches from file-based data-sharing to data-sharing using Geo-Webservices and standard transfer formats, and finally to model-based data-transfer with conceptual datamodels. Transfer formats can be derived automatically from conceptual datamodels. The deployment of standard formats and protocols for webservices offers a solution for only one aspect of the problem concerning interoperability. In order to be able to tap the full potential of geodata-sharing, model information concerning the desired datasets must be accessible.
The presented dissertation contributes to the realisation of semantic interoperability towards the sharing of distributed, heterogeneous geodata. Furthermore, the potential and the limitations of the method are assessed in the context of a prototype implementation and also based on practical transformation examples. Current developments in the field of SDI ask for semantic interoperability besides syntactic interoperability for data exchange. Thereby, datasets have to be integrated into an SDI what presupposes structural changes on the level of data models. From the data-use viewpoint, a number of preconditions are needed: (1) data modeling based on clearly defined conceptual schema languages, (2) semantic model transformation on the conceptual level including automatic data transformation, (3) unambiguous encoding rules and (4) standard interfaces or services for data exchange. Appropriate standards provide a fundament thereto.
The developed approach provides a model-driven Web Feature Service with semantic transformation. This combination brings out a unique feature of the presented research project. Both the concept and the implementation are based on the following three main components :
1- Extension of the OGC WFS communication protocol in order to allow for the transfer of model information and to execute semantic model transformations.
2- Development of UMLT, a conceptual language for the definition of mapping rules within transformation models.
3- Implementation of the concept in a fully functional prototype application. Appliance of the model transformation for data-sharing in the Lake Constance region.
This approach allows for semantic interoperability and the use of well-established methods for data exchange at the same time. The evaluation of the results shows that a solution for the realisation of interoperability in the context of SDI is realised. Our solution features advantages compared to format- or schema-based approaches. As a matter of fact, the above mentioned preconditions are mandatory in order to achieve semantic interoperability.
Further analysis of the concepts concerning semantic interoperability leads to the limitations of the methodology. As a result, one can distinguish between conceptual, technical, and practical characteristics of those limitations. This includes insufficient meta-interoperability, non-bijectivity of model mappings, different encoding rules, incompleteness of destination model coverage by source models and functional/specialist barriers.
The discussion of existing approaches in the field of ontologies shows that the implemented model-driven approach can be classified in an "ontology spectrum" along with other ontology-based concepts.Note de contenu : 1. Einleitung

[Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) The design and development of a highly interactive web-based, GIS-enabled atlas is reported. The atlas is a prototype, designed as a model for implementation of atlases to support government cancer-control activities. This model integrates symbolisation and design principles from print cartography, interaction strategies from exploratory geovisualisation, and web-map/web-feature service advances from GIS. The atlas has been implemented using a client-server architecture. It makes use of two open-source GIS tools, PostGIS (as the system database) and GeoServer (to connect the database to the client mapping application). The client mapping application has been built in Macromedia Flash. The entire client-server architecture is described, then direct primary emphasis is focused on the client mapping application. For this component of the system, the interface design strategy is detailed, the approach taken to implement this strategy in Flash is documented, and the mechanisms developed to build dynamic links from the client to the underlying database through the server are outlined. Features of the atlas are presented through a prototypical use scenario for a target user. [Termes IGN] Web Feature ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) The development of geographic information systems (GIS) is now being accompanied by an increasing popularity of Internet GIS mapping services. This study concerns two important issues with Internet GIS interoperability and Open source resources. Centering on the interplay of these two issues, we provide a systematic overview of techniques that have been used to deliver Internet GIS mapping and the relevance of the two issues with regard to these techniques. We then present a standard-and-open-source-based framework for Internet GIS mapping services to achieve data interoperability and high visual quality. The framework employs the Web Feature Service (WFS) to handle vector data and raster data. The Geography Markup Language (GML) standard is used for interoperable data storage and management. The Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) standard is used to visualize GML data in web browsers. Two preliminary prototypes have been developed to demonstrate the capabilities of the framework. We conclude that using standard-based solutions is an important and viable direction of interoperable Internet GIS services. Advances in standardization and technology have significant implications for Internet GIS mapping. There are many powerful open sources tools which, when coupled with open standards, may be used to develop high-quality online GIS services. Importantly, these solutions require no investment in software, yet achieve excellent interoperability and visualization quality; they are excellent alternative approaches to Internet mapping.
