[Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) With the launch of the Indian remote sensing satellite Cartosat-1, an along-track stereoscopic imaging mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), new possibilities for operational availability of high-resolution stereo-imagery from space for the remote sensing and cartography user communities have emerged. The high-resolution stereo data beamed from twin cameras on board the Cartosat-1 mission facilitates topographic mapping up to 1:25 000 scale. The primary advantage of the Cartosat-1 mission is seen in the generation of digital elevation models (DEMs) and the production of ortho-images in an operational set-up. This also facilitates 3D terrain visualisation for very large tracts of land. Stereo Strip Triangulation (SST) is a software system developed and perfected at the Space Applications Centre of ISRO for operational generation of secondary control and appropriate DEMs for subsequent use in the generation of ortho-images. This system has been in use for almost 2 years at the National Remote Sensing Agency in Hyderabad, India, and has generated a wealth of data for use in topographic mapping. An initiative to generate a database of seamless, homogeneous DEMs and associated ortho-image tiles at country level has been undertaken by ISRO. This data-set has been named CartoDEM. The Cartosat-1 data processing team has completed the design and testing of software for the generation of the CartoDEM. This software system has undergone detailed evaluation and currently is in the final stage of development of the operational procedures required to make maximum use of the capabilities of the Cartosat-1 sensors. A data dissemination software system is currently under development. As part of the large-scale evaluation exercises to finalise the specifications of CartoDEM, it is established that with the 2·5 m ground resolution, a base-to-height ratio of 0·62 and with capability to register conjugate points in the stereopair to sub-pixel level, DEMs can be generated at 0·3 arc second intervals, with a height accuracy of 3 to 4 m, over tracts of undulating land mass up to 15 000 km2 with the use of 10 to 20 ground control points. The Cartosat-1 data processing and evaluation team regularly monitors the radiometric quality of images. As part of the radiometric characterisation of sensors, the team computed point spread functions (PSFs) for the two cameras of Cartosat-1. Special filters based on the PSFs then work to improve the radiometric quality of the images. Initial results from these exercises show good promise in image restoration based on PSFs for Cartosat-1. This paper presents a summary of activities and exercises related to (i) Stereo Strip Triangulation, (ii) CartoDEM, (iii) image quality improvement using the PSF-based image restoration and (iv) block adjustment exercises using a COTS software package. Also reported are the results of post-launch experiments, study and evaluation of DEMs vis-à-vis ortho-images from Cartosat-1. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) This study investigates fire-induced spectral changes detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) in different land-cover types in Borneo. Linear discriminant analysis is used to determine the most powerful band combinations among the MODIS reflective bands for discrimination between burnt and unburnt areas in each land-cover type. The results show that the nature of fire-induced changes is dependent on pre-fire vegetation characteristics in this region. Bands 1 (0.64 um), 2 (0.86 um), and 7 (2.14 um) are found to be the most sensitive bands in land-cover types dominated by green vegetation, and consequently indices or combinations of indices using these three bands are potentially effective for burnt-area detection in the majority of areas. In land-cover types dominated by dry vegetation and soil, MODIS band 5 (1.24 um) alone showed the greatest statistical separability and could not be significantly improved by any multiband index. [Vedettes matières IGN] Traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (auteur) The determination of global positioning system (GPS) heights with submillimeter accuracy needs proper correction of tropospheric delay. In this letter, the modeling of zenith hydrostatic delay (ZHD) was addressed, considering that wet delay must be treated separately. ZHD is traditionally estimated from Saastamoinen's formula using a mean-gravity model and surface pressure observations. The uncertainty in ZHD associated with the mean-gravity model is about 0.3 mm. An improved parametric model is derived here, which yields an uncertainty in the ZHD less than 0.1 mm when the surface altitude lies in the range of 0-9 km. A second parametric model is derived for higher altitudes (such as above radiosonde observations or atmospheric models). Both parametric models depend on latitude, height, and time variables. This dependence is due to the link between the mean gravity and temperature profiles between the surface and ~80-km altitude. The uncertainty in the parametric models due to short-term temporal variability of the temperature profiles is shown to produce an uncertainty in ZHD smaller than 0.1 mm. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) A two-year study was conducted in 2002 and 2003 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's center for urban water conservation to assess canopy spectral response of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) grown under various combinations of N and irrigation (based on leaching fraction: LF) treatments. Multispectral measurements were acquired using a ground-based spectroradiometer (200–1100 nm) on a biweekly basis during the growing season (October–May) in 2002 and 2003. Multispectral parameters were correlated with soil–plant parameters and temporal variability was investigated. Results showed that the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), stress index (SI), photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and canopy reflectance at 693 nm, were highly correlated with tissue N concentration (TN), tissue moisture content (TM), TN*TM and canopy colour, as influenced by N and LF treatment combinations. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) Urban environmental conditions are strongly dependent on the biophysical properties and radiant thermal field of the land cover elements in the urban mosaic. Observations of urban reflectance and surface temperature provide valuable constraints on the physical properties that are determinants of mass and energy fluxes in the urban environment. Consistencies in the covariation of surface temperature with reflectance properties can be parameterized to represent characteristics of the surface energy flux associated with different land covers and physical conditions. Linear mixture models can accurately represent Landsat ETM+ reflectances as fractions of generic spectral endmembers that correspond to land surface materials with distinct physical properties. Modeling heterogeneous land cover as mixtures of rock and/or soil Substrate, Vegetation and non-reflective Dark surface (SVD) generic endmembers makes it possible to quantify the dependence of aggregate surface temperature on the relative abundance of each physical component of the land cover, thereby distinguishing the effects of vegetation abundance, soil exposure, albedo and shadowing. Comparing these covariations in a wide variety of urban settings and physical environments provides a more robust indication of the global variability in these parameter spaces than could be inferred from a single study area. A comparative analysis of 24 urban areas and their non-urban peripheries illustrates the variability in the urban thermal fields and its dependence on biophysical land surface components. Contrary to expectation, moderate resolution intra-urban variations in surface temperature are generally as large as regional surface heat island signatures in these urban areas. Many of the non-temperate urban areas did not have surface heat island signatures at all. However, the multivariate distributions of surface temperature and generic endmember fractions reveal consistent patterns of thermal fraction covariation resulting from land cover characteristics.
