[Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) We present a new method to determine the near surface air temperature (Ta) from satellite observations. The satellite observed parameters of total precipitable water (W), atmospheric boundary layer (~500 m) water vapour (Wb), and sea surface temperature (SST) are used to derive Ta. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to find the optimum relation between the input (W, Wb, SST) and output (Ta) parameters. The input data consist of 6 years (1988–1993) of insTanTaneous as well as monthly averages of W, Wb from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), and SST data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). Ta observations based on Comprehensive Ocean Atmospheric Data Set (COADS) are used to develop and evaluate the new methodology. The global mean root mean square (rms) error for instantaneous Ta estimates is 1.4°C and for monthly averages it decreases to 0.74°C. Slightly higher discrepancies between Ta derived from the new method and in situ data are found over the western boundary currents (such as the Kuroshio and Gulf Stream) during wintertime. These regions are characterized by continental cold air outbreak and seasonal current systems, particularly during wintertime. During these conditions weak coupling between SST and Ta may be one of the reasons for large error over these regions. Our method improves upon the air temperature estimates of earlier studies. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) The discrimination of harmful algal blooms (HABs) from space would benefit both the capability of early warning systems and the study of environmental factors affecting the initiation of blooms. Unfortunately, there are no published techniques using global monitoring satellite sensors to distinguish the resulting subtle changes in ocean colour, so in situ sampling is needed to identify the species in any observed bloom. This paper investigates multivariate classification as an objective means to discriminate harmful and harmless algae and monitor their dynamics using ocean colour data derived from satellite sensors. The classifier is trained and tested using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data, though the method is designed to be generic for other sensors. Time-series results are presented using the new HAB likelihood index and suggest that SeaWiFS has some capability for observing the dynamic evolution of harmful blooms of Karenia mikimotoi, Chattonella verruculosa and cyanobacteria. Further, a multi-band spatial subtraction algorithm is described to automate the identification of bloom regions and improve the accuracy in discriminating HABs. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) A new method (the 'sink' method) is proposed for the mapping of productive mesoscale oceanic thermal fronts based on the combined analysis of satellite imagery for sea surface temperature (SST) distribution and chlorophyll (CHL) concentration under a Geographic Information System (GIS). In an SST lattice data array, data value sinks describe heterogeneous drops in SST distribution as this is compared to more homogeneously distributed SST in the surrounding area. Using Arc/Info GIS, these thermal discontinuities are flagged and applied on SST and CHL imagery for the calculation of differences in SST and CHL patterns (DSST and DCHL) inside and outside of these flagged areas. Spatially connected sinks that are characterized by simultaneous negative DSST and positive DCHL pattern are mapped as thermal fronts. Results include a time series of monthly front occurrence GIS maps in Eastern Mediterranean waters along with three calculated front characteristics (DSST, DCHL and bathymetry). Comparisons between the mapped fronts and isobath distributions present clearly visible front-to-isobath spatial and shape associations while spatial analysis between front and wind data explains 66% of the number of mapped fronts. [Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) Different methodologies to estimate the amplitude of the sea surface temperature diurnal variation (DV) and remove it from remotly sensed SST images have been proposed in the last years. Among these, the parametrization proposed by Stuart-Menteth et al. (2004a, b) [...] published by the International GHRSST-PP Project-Office pp.241 appeared as the most promising. In fact, it takes into account wind and insolation variations during the day, that effectively drive the SST diurnal cycle. This parametrization has been tested on 6 months of NOAA-16 AVHRR images acquired and processed at CNR with Pathfinder algorithm. The tests evidenced some limits for a correct estimation of the DV in low-wind regimes for any insolation condition, and high insolation regimes (>600 W/m2 ) when the wind intensity increases of more than 2m/s during the morning. The limits of applicability of DV correction to NOAA-16 AVHRR data (at least for the Mediterranean area) were thus identified, and data outside these limits were flagged. However, some anomalous heating were not corrected even with these constraints, due to the lack of accuracy in the wind field used for the correction. As result, a strategy to flag residual outliers in the corrected daily images has been developed, based on the comparison to an optimally interpolated night SSt field of the previous day.
