[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) We explore how the ground flora of a temperate woodland (Wytham Woods, southern England) changed in terms of species-richness, cover and biomass over five decades; what the drivers of change were; and possible future change as a consequence of the decline in Fraxinus excelsior as a canopy dominant. Vascular plants were recorded from 164 permanent, 10x10 m plots, distributed as a 141 m grid, in 1974, 1991, 1999, 2012, and 2018. Species presence and frequency/abundance in each plot were estimated and used to model biomass changes. Changes in species-richness, vegetation composition and structure were analysed. Stands opened out by thinning or which became denser through tree growth gained or lost species respectively, particularly non-woodland species. Deer pressure favoured the spread of Brachypodium sylvaticum and reduced Rubus fruticosus. No obvious impacts of climate change, eutrophication or of invasive species were detected in the plot records although other signs suggest these are starting to affect the flora. Just 12 out of 235 species contributed 47% of all species occurrences, 82% of the vegetation cover and 87% of the modelled biomass. We conclude that the ground flora is highly variable over decadal timescales, but the patterns of change observed differ according to the measures used (species richness, cover, biomass, etc). Site level drivers in the short-term swamped effects of slower acting regional/global drivers. Legacy effects were seen in the greater richness of specialists in the older woodland. While some impacts can be mitigated by management, others are largely beyond control at the site level. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) The goal of this study was to predict the need for commercial thinning using airborne lidar data (ALS) with random forest (RF) machine learning algorithm. Two test sites (with areas of 14,750 km2 and 12,630 km2) were used with a total of 1053 forest stands from southwestern Estonia and 951 forest stands from southeastern Estonia. The thinnings were predicted based on the ALS measurements in 2019 and 2017. The two most important ALS metrics for predicting the need for thinning were the 95th height percentile and the canopy cover. The prediction accuracy based on validation stands was 93.5% for southwestern Estonia and 85.7% for southeastern Estonia. For comparison, the general linear model prediction accuracy was less for both test sites—92.1% for southwest and 81.8% for southeast. The selected important predictive ALS metrics differed from those used in the RF algorithm. The cross-validation of the thinning necessity models of southeastern and southwestern Estonia showed a dependence on geographic regions. This popular hybrid approach is widely applied in medical and health science, and industrial management, mainly agriculture and environmental sciences. However, it is a complex, time-consuming method, which has induced us to try and optimize the decision-support system process. We create the Fuzzy-AHP algorithm and program in Matlab software, and convert it with the Matlab based graphical user interface (GUI) application. This is a new desktop tool with a wide selection of applications to help decision-makers prioritize choices and/or criteria goals based on expert judgments imported from Excel and a number of criteria. The new technique is designed to allow experts to fill the matrix judgment from both sides depending on the importance of criteria selection. Also, an optional alpha index to define stable or unstable conditions was requested for advanced users. The application was tested and applied in forest recreation and agroforestry case studies. The user-friendly Fuzzy-AHP Matlab GUI facilitates the process analysis speedily and offers an innovative way of enhancing the uncertainty to find the best compromise among experts. The tool is useful for optimizing the decision-support system process in many different fields. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Increase in forest disturbance due to land use as well as climate change has led to an expansion of young forests worldwide, which drives global carbon dynamics and timber allocation. This study presents a method that combines a single airborne LiDAR acquisition and time since harvest maps to model height growth of post-logged black spruce-dominated forests in a 1700 km2 eastern Canadian boreal landscape. We developed a random forest model in which forest height at a 20 m × 20 m pixel resolution is a function of stand age, combined with environmental variables (e.g., slope, site moisture, surface deposit). Our results highlight the model's strong predictive power: least-square regression between predicted and observed height of our validation dataset was very close to the 1:1 relation and strongly supported by validation metrics (R2 = 0.74; relative RMSE = 19%). Environmental variables thus allowed to accurately predict forest productivity with a high spatial resolution (20 m × 20 m pixels) and predicted forest height growth in the first 50 years after logging ranged between 16 and 27 cm·year−1 across the whole study area, with a mean of 20.5 cm·year−1. The spatial patterns of potential height growth were strongly linked to the effect of topographical variables, with better growth rates on mesic slopes compared to poorly drained soils. Such models could have key implications in forest management, for example to maintain forest ecosystem services by adjusting the harvesting rates depending on forest productivity across the landscapes. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Accurate spatial information regarding forest types and tree species is immensely important for efficient forest management strategies. In the UK and particularly in Wales, creating a spatial inventory of larch (Larix sps.) plantations that encompasses both the public and private forests has become one of the highest priorities of woodland management policies, particularly given the need to respond to the rapid spread of Phytophthora ramorum fungal disease. For directing disease control measures, national scale, regularly updated mapping of larch distributions is essential. In this study, we applied a ExtraTree classifier machine learning algorithm to multi-year (June 2015 and December 2019) multi-path composites of vegetation indices derived from 10 m Sentinel-2 satellite data (spectral range used in this study: 490–2190 nm) to map the extent of larch plantations across Wales. For areas identified as woody vegetation, areas under larch plantations were associated with a needle-leaved leaf type and deciduous phenology, allowing differentiation from broad-leaved deciduous and needle-leaved evergreen types. The model accuracies for validation, which included overall accuracy, producer’s and user’s accuracies, exceeded 95% and the F1-score was greater than 0.97 for all forest types. Comparison against an independent reference dataset indicated all map accuracies above 90% (F1-score higher than 0.92) with the lowest value being 90.3% for the producer’s accuracy for larch. Short wave infrared and red-edge based indices were particularly useful for discriminating larch from other forest types. Capacity for updating information on clear-felling of larch stands through annual updates of a woody mask was also introduced. The resulting maps of larch plantations for Wales are the most current for Wales covering public as well as private woodlands and can be routinely updated. The classification approach has potential to be transferred to a wider geographical area given the availability of open-source multi-year Sentienl-2 datasets and robust calibration datasets.
