[Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) The increasing prevalence of (open) geospatial data has amplified the demand for online tools to input, manage, and analyse data and generate cartographic outputs. WebGIS platforms are responding to this demand by delivering cost-effective, relatively easy to use compared to desktop GIS software, and increasingly sophisticated tools. The continued advancement of webGIS platforms highlights the necessary, but tricky, integration of these platforms into university curriculum. In this paper, we develop an evaluation framework for users to assess, compare, and benchmark the cartographic capabilities of four webGIS platforms–ArcGIS Online, Carto, Mapbox, and GIS Cloud–against standard GIS functionality. The webGIS platforms studied offer advanced data management and some spatial analysis capabilities, but in contrast, they have limited cartographic capabilities for creating static maps. Recognizing that platforms change, and change often, this study serves to benchmark the capabilities of webGIS platforms, while reflecting on the observed challenges to teaching neocartography tools. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) Geoportals have been the primary source of spatial information to researchers in diverse fields. Recent years have seen a growing trend to integrate spatial analysis and geovisual analytics inside Geoportals. Researchers could use the Geoportal to conduct basic analysis without offline processing. In practice, domain-specific analysis often requires researchers to integrate heterogeneous data sources, leverage new statistical models, or build their own customized models. These tasks are increasingly being tackled with open source tools in programming languages such as Python or R. However, it is unrealistic to incorporate the numerous open source tools in a Geoportal platform for data processing and analysis. This work provides an exploratory effort to bridge Geoportals and open source tools through Python scripting. The Geoportal demonstrated in this work is the Urban and Regional Explorer for China studies. A python package is provided to manipulate this platform in the local programming environment. The server side of the Geoportal implements a set of service endpoints that allows the package to upload, transform, and process user data and seamlessly integrate them into the existing datasets. A case study is provided that illustrated the use of this package to conduct integrated analyses of search engine data and baseline census data. This work attempts a new direction in Geoportal development, which could further promote the transformation of Geoportals into online analytical workbenches. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) CyberGIS is an interdisciplinary field that merges components of cyber‐infrastructure, geographic information science, and spatial analysis. This fusion combines the technical capabilities of advanced cyber‐infrastructure with the spatial analysis capabilities of GIS. How expert GIS practitioners perceive, use, and value the various components of CyberGIS is unknown, making student preparation for CyberGIS competency difficult. To address this gap, we reviewed the CyberGIS literature to develop a set of 37 key CyberGIS concepts. Then, we used Q‐methodology to interview 20 expert GIS users to understand the components of CyberGIS they viewed as most applicable to their GIS practice. Three distinct conceptions of CyberGIS expertise emerged: the spatial analyst, the domain‐specific problem solver, and the CyberGIS‐enabled computer scientist. The CyberGIS‐enabled computer scientist emphasized the underlying technologies which allow spatial analysts to discover and implement advanced methods and processes in GIS, which are then utilized by problem solvers to address domain‐focused issues. These three contrasting perceptions of CyberGIS expertise raise questions about the nature of curriculum and instruction appropriate to develop competent CyberGIS practitioners. With the identified variety of expert practices concerning CyberGIS, confusing practices and contrasting visions of the nature of CyberGIS reveal a need for instructional organization. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) Many scholars have demonstrated growing interest in GIScience in recent years, including use of open data portals, shared code and options for open access publication. These practices have made both research and data more transparent and accessible for a broad audience. This research may be open only in a limited sense for populations without expertise in the technology and methods undergirding these data. Based on two case studies using RStudio’s Shiny web platform, we argue that a process-based approach focusing on how analysis is opened throughout the research process provides a supplementary way to define and reflect upon public facing geographic research. Reflecting upon decisions we made at key points in each case study project, we identify four key tensions inherent to work in open GIScience: standardized vs. flexible tools, expert vs. community-led design, single vs. multiple audiences and established vs. emerging metrics.
