[Termes descripteurs IGN] tessellationRésumé : (auteur) The traditional approach to mobile phone positioning is based on the assumption that the geographical location of a cell tower recorded in a Call Details Record (CDR) is a proxy for a device's location. A Voronoi tessellation is then constructed based on the entire network of cell towers and this tessellation is considered as a coordinate system, with the device located in a Voronoi polygon of a cell tower that is recorded in the CDR. If Voronoi-based positioning is correct, the uniqueness of the device trajectory is very high, and the device can be identified based on 3–5 of its recorded locations. We investigate a probabilistic approach to device positioning that is based on knowledge of each antennas' parameters and number of connections, as dependent on the distance to the antenna. The critical difference between the Voronoi-based and the real world layout is in the essential overlap of the antennas' service areas: The device that is located in a cell tower's polygon can be served by a more distant antenna that is chosen by the network system to balance the network load. Combining data on the distance distribution of the number of connections available for each antenna in the network, we resolve the overlap problem by applying Bayesian inference and construct a realistic distribution of the device location. Probabilistic device positioning demands a full revision of mobile phone privacy and new full set of tools for data analysis. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) We introduce a semantically-enriched method of generating color schemes for various types of digital maps that reduces the energy consumption of the display device while preserving the quality of the original design. Energy-aware design intersects two important trends in cartography. First, as more maps are viewed today on mobile, battery life has become a central constraint influencing design. Second, there is increasing need for green computing, which encourages the efficient use of energy to limit environmental impacts. This paper focuses on one important aspect of energy-aware cartography: color design. Existing research on energy-aware color adjustment methods apply broadly to images or websites. However, the colors used in maps have more structured semantic relationships than most documents viewed on mobile devices, and efforts to account for these relationships while reducing energy consumption are limited. To fill this gap, we mathematically formalize energy-aware map-color adjustment as a constrained optimization problem: we define energy consumption as the objective function and model the preservation of semantic relationships as the search constraints. We evaluate our proposed method against a common color dimming method using four maps with different semantic relationships. The evaluation suggests that our proposed method better preserves the original color semantics. [Termes descripteurs IGN] urbanismeRésumé : (Auteur) This research attempts to build a unified framework for distinguishing the spatiotemporal visit patterns of urban places by different social groups using mobile phone data in Harbin, China. Social groups are detected by their social ties in the ego‐to‐ego mobile phone call network and are embedded in physical space according to their home locations. Popular urban places are detected from user‐generated content as the basic spatial analysis unit. Coupling subscribers’ footprints and urban places in physical space, the spatiotemporal visit patterns of urban places by distinct social groups are uncovered and interpreted by non‐negative matrix factorization. The proposed framework enables us to answer several critical questions from three perspectives: (1) How to model popular urban places in terms of vague boundary, land use, and semantic features based on crowdsourcing data?; (2) How to evaluate interaction between individuals for inspecting the relationship between spatial proximity and social ties based on spatiotemporal co‐occurrence?; and (3) How to distinguish urban place visit preferences for social groups associated with different socio‐demographic characteristics? Our research could assist urban planners and municipal managers to identify critical urban places frequented by different population groups according to their roles and social/cultural characteristics for improvement of urban facility allocation. [Termes descripteurs IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) The outreach of Wi-Fi localization is extended in this study for urban wide applications as they provide the high potential to employ them for numerous applications for localization and guidance in urban environments. The selected application presented in this paper is the localization and routing of public transport smartphone users. For the conducted investigations, Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values are collected for users who are travelling from home in a residential neighbourhood to work in the city centre and return along the same route. Special tramway trains are selected which provide two on-board Wi-Fi Access Points (APs). Firstly, the availability, visibility and RSSI stability of the Wi-Fi signal behavior of these APs and the APs in the surrounding environment along the routes is analyzed. Then the trajectories are estimated based on location fingerprinting. A first analyses reveals that significant differences exists between the six employed smartphones as well as times of the day, e. g. in the morning at peak hours or at off-peak hours. From the long-time observations it is seen that the two on-board APs show a high stability of the RSSI signals at the same times of the day and along the whole route. It is therefore currently investigated how they can confirm and validate user localization along the route and if they can contribute to constrain the overall positioning solution in combination with the inertial smartphone sensors. Moreover, the railway track can serve as a further constraint. As an outlook on future work, the development of a Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) solution with a fusion with the smartphone inertial sensors is proposed. Compared with traditional census data, population data obtained from mobile phone data has high availability and high real-time performance. However, the spatial distribution of base stations is uneven, and the service boundaries remain uncertain, which brings significant challenges to the accuracy of dasymetric population mapping. This paper proposes a Grid Voronoi method to provide reliable spatial boundaries for base stations and to build a subsequent regression based on mobile phone and building use data. The results show that the Grid Voronoi method gives high fitness in building use regression, and further comparison between the traditional ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model and geographically weighted regression (GWR) model indicates that the building use data can well reflect the heterogeneity of urban geographic space. This method provides a relatively convenient and reliable idea for capturing high-precision population distribution, based on mobile phone and building use data.
