[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Leaf area index (LAI), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and surface broadband albedo are three routinely generated land-surface parameters from satellite observations, which have been widely used in land-surface modeling and environmental monitoring. Currently, most global land products are retrieved separately from individual satellite data. Many issues, such as data gaps, spatial and temporal inconsistencies, and insufficient accuracy under certain conditions resulting from the inadequacies of single-sensor observations, have made the incorporation of multiple sensors a reasonable solution. In this paper, an approach to simultaneous estimation of LAI, broadband albedo, and FAPAR from multiple-satellite sensors is further refined. The method, improved from that proposed in an earlier study using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, consists of several steps. First, a coupled dynamic and radiative-transfer model based on MODIS, SPOT/VEGETATION, and Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer data was developed to retrieve LAI values and use them to construct a time-evolving dynamic model. Second, an iteration process with predefined exit criteria was developed to obtain consistent gap-filled LAI estimates. Third, a spectral albedo based on the retrieved LAI values was simulated using a radiative-transfer model and then converted to a broadband albedo using empirical methods. Snow-covered pixels identified by normalized difference snow index thresholds were adjusted to the weighted average of the underlying albedo and the maximum snow albedo. Finally, the FAPAR of green vegetation was calculated as a combination of the albedo at the top of the canopy, the soil albedo, and the transmittance of the PAR down to the background. Validation of retrieved LAI, albedo, and FAPAR values obtained from multiple-satellite data over ten study sites has demonstrated that the proposed method can produce more accurate products than presently distributed global products. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) A forest fire started on August 8th, 2016 in several places on Madeira Island causing damage and casualties. As of August 10th the local media had reported the death of three people, over 200 people injured, over 950 habitants evacuated, and 50 houses damaged. This study presents the preliminary results of the assessment of several spectral indices to evaluate the burn severity of Madeira fires during August 2016. These spectral indices were calculated using the new European satellite Sentinel-2A launched in June 2015. The study confirmed the advantages of several spectral indices such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVIreXn) using red-edge spectral bands to assess the post-fire conditions. Results showed high correlation between NDVI, GNDVI, NBR and NDVIre1n spectral indices and the analysis performed by Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR175), considered as the reference truth. Regarding the red-edge spectral indices, the NDVIre1n (using band B5, 705 nm) presented better results compared with B6 (740 nm) and B7 (783 nm) bands. These preliminary results allow us to assume that Sentinel-2 will be a valuable tool for post-fire monitoring. In the future, the two twin Sentinel-2 satellites will offer global coverage of the Madeira Archipelago every five days, therefore allowing the simultaneous study of the evolution of the burnt area and reforestation information with high spatial (up to 10 m) and temporal resolution (5 days). [Termes IGN] pansharpening (fusion d'images)Résumé : (Auteur) Pan-sharpening is the process of fusing higher spatial resolution panchromatic (PAN) with lower spatial resolution multispectral (MS) imagery to create higher spatial resolution MS images. Here, our overall objective was to pan-sharpen Landsat-8 images and calculate vegetation greenness (i.e., normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)), canopy structure (i.e., enhanced vegetation index (EVI)), and canopy water content (i.e., normalized difference water index (NDWI))-related variables. Our proposed methods consisted of: (i) evaluating the relationships between PAN band (0.503–0.676 µm) with a spatial resolution of 15 m and individual MS bands of Landsat-8 from blue (i.e., acquiring in the range 0.452–0.512 µm), green (i.e., 0.533–0.590 µm), red (i.e., 0.636–0.673 µm), near infrared (NIR: 0.851–0.879 µm), shortwave infrared-I (SWIR-I: 1.566–1.651 µm), and SWIR-II (2.107–2.294 µm) bands with a spatial resolution of 30 m; (ii) determining the suitable individual MS bands to be enhanced into the spatial resolution of the PAN band; and (iii) calculating several vegetation greenness and canopy moisture indices (i.e., NDVI, EVI, NDWI-I, and NDWI-II) at 15 m spatial resolution and subsequent validation using their equivalent-values at a spatial resolution of 30 m. Our analysis revealed that strong linear relationships existed between the PAN and most of the MS individual bands of interest except NIR. For example, r2 values were 0.86–0.89 for blue band; 0.89–0.95 for green band; 0.84–0.96 for red band; 0.71–0.79 for SWIR-I band; and 0.71–0.83 for SWIR-II band. As a result, we performed smoothing filter-based intensity modulation method of pan-sharpening to enhance the spatial resolution of 30 m to 15 m. In calculating the vegetation indices, we used the enhanced MS images and resampled the NIR to 15 m. Finally, we evaluated these indices with their equivalents at 30 m spatial resolution and observed strong relationships (i.e., r2 values in the range 0.98–0.99 for NDVI, 0.95–0.98 for EVI, 0.98–1.00 for NDWI). We have developed and tested a method for estimation of the Baltic Sea SIC using SENTINEL-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 passive microwave radiometer (MWR) data. Here, we present the method and results for January 2016. Ice concentration grids of Finnish Meteorological Institute daily ice charts have been used as reference data in this paper. We present a comparison of four SIC estimation methods with our reference data. In addition to the combined SAR/MWR SIC estimation method, we also compare SIC estimates produced using SAR alone and two MWR-based methods. The main target of this paper was to develop and test a high-resolution SIC estimation method suitable for operational use.
