[Termes IGN] températureRésumé : (Auteur) Concerns over greenhouse-gas forcing and global temperatures have initiated research into understanding climate forcing and associated Earth-system responses. A significant component is the Earth's cryosphere, as glacier- related, feedback mechanisms govern atmospheric, hydrospheric and lithospheric response. Predicting the human and natural dimensions of climate-induced environmental change requires global, regional and local information about ice-mass distribution, volumes, and fluctuations. The Global Land-ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) project is specifically designed to produce and augment baseline information to facilitate glacier-change studies. This requires addressing numerous issues, including the generation of topographic information, anisotropic-reflectance correction of satellite imagery, data fusion and spatial analysis, and GIS-based modeling. Field and satellite investigations indicate that many small glaciers and glaciers in temperate regions are downwasting and retreating, although detailed mapping and assessment are still required to ascertain regional and global patterns of ice-mass variations. Such remote sensing/GIS studies, coupled with field investigations, are vital for producing baseline information on glacier changes, and improving our understanding of the complex linkages between atmospheric, lithospheric, and glaciological processes. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper compares the discrimination ability of two texture analysis methods: Markov random fields (MRFs) and gray-level cooccurrence probabilities (GLCPs). There exists limited published research comparing different texture methods, especially with regard to segmenting remotely sensed imagery. The role of window size in texture feature consistency and separability as well as the role in handling of multiple textures within a window are investigated. Necessary testing is performed on samples of synthetic (MRF generated), Brodatz, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sea ice imagery. GLCPs are demonstrated to have improved discrimination ability relative to MRFs with decreasing window size, which is important when performing image segmentation. On the other hand, GLCPs are more sensitive in texture boundary confusion than MRFs given their respective segmentation procedures. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The present study uses a satellite remote sensing approach for assesssing coastal sediment dynamics in the western side of the Zanzibar channel, Tanzania. Four Landsat images (1986, 1998, 1999 and 2000) were used for the study. investigation of the four images revealed that the Ruvu delta north of the river mouth has been growing rapidly, especially between 1986 and 1998, with an annual northward linear growth rate of about 133m year -1 and an annual areal growth rate of about 1 km2 every 3 years. The study identified a palaeo-shoreline feature that is parallel to the present shoreline and located about 1.9 km inland from the present shoreline. An important sediment contributor to river Ruvu is derived from the Uluguru Mountains, a tropical mountainous area located about 200 km from the coastline of the Tanzania mainland. The working hypothesis is that either the observed growth of the delta occured at a gradual rate between 1986 and 1998 or it was mainly an episodic event related to the extreme rainfall events such as the 1997/98 El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event, which was associated with extreme rainfall and widespread landslides. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The present paper describes a feature extraction method based on M-band wavelet packet frames for segmenting remotely sensed images. These wavelet features are then evaluated and selected using an efficient neurofuzzy algorithm. Both the feature extraction and neurofuzzy feature evaluation methods are unsupervised, and they do not require the knowledge of the number and distribution of classes corresponding to various land covers in remotely sensed images. The effectiveness of the methodology is demonstrated on two four-band Indian Remote Sensing 1A satellite (IRS-1A) images containing five to six overlapping classes and a three-band SPOT image containing seven overlapping classes.
