[Termes IGN] universitéRésumé : (auteur) 3D scenes within all media indicate a societal preference shift toward 3D presentations. In spite of wide data availability and successful standardization efforts in 3D modeling, it is not a standard practice to offer large-scale topographic references to the end user in the form of 3D models. This motivates to propose automated strategies for the generation of closed 3D representations of a complete urban landscape, which at the same time account for capabilities of consumer-class devices. The campus of Dresden University of Technology served as a test case. The final appearance of the 3D model will be steered directly by the original geographic information system (GIS) data source. Such a “schematic model” displays source classes and attributes by nonphotorealistic rendering. A tested generic workflow can be presented, which programmatically integrates attributed 2D GIS entities and digital elevation model data, checks for compliancy with consistency rules and generates a slim geometric model. Only detailed GIS references can be considered to allow close-range visualization as needed in virtual walks. In delegating the geometric processing to automated workflows, playing room is gained for as well innovative as expressive texturing and, thus, design of the final 3D model. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) collects dense 3D topographic information in the form of points. LiDAR data can be displayed either through direct rendering of the point cloud or by generalizing features extracted through classification or segmentation. We are working in the domain of visualizing LiDAR data sets and have developed certain pipelines for visualization. These pipelines have been presented elsewhere. We present a technique for the evaluation of visualization schemes for LiDAR data, by conducting a visualization experience survey for 13 pre-processing and visualization schemes where 60 participants rated these schemes on a 10 point scale on a questionnaire. The paper establishes a ranking for the different visualization schemes described herein. Finally, this paper establishes that our heuristic-based algorithm (presented elsewhere) performs almost equal to a classification-based visualization pipeline made using professional software. We believe that the presented technique can be used to assess other geospatial visualization schemes. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) Progressive TIN densification (PTD) is one of the classic methods for filtering airborne LiDAR point clouds. However, it may fail to preserve ground measurements in areas with steep terrain. A method is proposed to improve the PTD using a point cloud segmentation method, namely segmentation using smoothness constraint (SUSC). The classic PTD has two core steps. The first is selecting seed points and constructing the initial TIN. The second is an iterative densification of the TIN. Our main improvement is embedding the SUSC between these two steps. Specifically, after selecting the lowest points in each grid cell as initial ground seed points, SUSC is employed to expand the set of ground seed points as many as possible, as this can identify more ground seed points for the subsequent densification of the TIN-based terrain model. Seven datasets of ISPRS Working Group III/3 are utilized to test our proposed algorithm and the classic PTD. Experimental results suggest that, compared with the PTD, the proposed method is capable of preserving discontinuities of landscapes and reducing the omission errors and total errors by approximately 10% and 6% respectively, which would significantly decrease the cost of the manual operation required for correcting the result in post-processing. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) As a result of new sensors and methodologies that allow for faster and more accurate data acquisition, the production of highly detailed 3D models is becoming part of the standard workflow in many disciplines – architecture, cultural heritage, urban planning, and others. At the same time, new related problems have emerged concerning the management of the resulting large datasets and the integration of data coming from different sources. Data integration among heterogeneous datasets can lead to a variety of errors, and the reasons for these errors are multiple including geometric, topological or semantic incompatibilities, different resolutions and accuracies, and data acquired at different times. To overcome such errors, the integration of heterogeneous datasets requires appropriate homogenisation techniques. This article presents a new deterministic approach for the integration of a high resolution surface model and a lower resolution surface model, both given as triangular meshes embedded in 3D space, by means of a transition surface. The method can be applied after both datasets have been aligned. The derivation of the transition surface exploits extra data that are typically available in the high resolution model. These extra data (e.g. quite common when using a laser scanner) must be 2.5D and located around the high resolution model, they represent a sort of planimetric buffer around the high resolution object that can be thought as a “collar”. The proposed method generates a geometrically and topologically sound and continuous 2.5D surface that integrates the two models using the data contained in the collar. It takes into account the different quality aspects of the low and high resolution models such as point height, point density, and height gradient, and then creates a transition surface that interpolates these aspects between the embedded high resolution model and the surrounding low resolution model. The article also presents some experimental results, obtained from real datasets, and concludes with some remaining issues and possible improvements to the method.
