[Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (auteur) In the context of 3D building model production or updating, the models have to be manually checked one by one by a human operator in order to ensure their quality. In this paper, we investigate a new approach to perform a quality self-diagnosis of building models in dense urban areas from high resolution aerial images. Hence, we aim at reliably identifying roof facets that do not comply with quality specifications. The self-diagnosis process will highlight potential incorrect facets for their inspection by a human operator. A set of calibrated aerial images enable us to collect positive or negative evidences of roof facet existence and consistency. A particular attention has been paid to the definition of a set of low-level, complementary, robust and consistent image processing measures. Four quality classes have been defined and are used to classify roof facet quality. A supervised classifier and robust decision rules are then applied to perform an effective self-diagnosis according to the traffic light paradigm. Finally, the work in progress leads to a promising quantitative and qualitative evaluation in the context of dense urban areas. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Users of geographic information systems (GIS) usually render terrain using a point light source defined by an illumination vector. A terrain shaded from a single point provides good perceptual cues to surface orientation. This type of hill shading, however, does not include any visual cues to the relative height of surface elements. We propose shading the terrain under uniform diffuse illumination, where light arrives equally from all directions of a theoretical sky surrounding the terrain. Surface elements at lower elevations tend to have more of the sky obscured from view and are thus shaded darker. This tinting approach has the advantage that it provides more detailed renderings than point source illumination. We describe two techniques of computing terrain shading under uniform diffuse illumination. One technique uses a GIS-based hill-shading and shadowing tool to combine many point source renderings into one approximating the terrain under uniform diffuse illumination. The second technique uses a C++ computer algorithm for computing the inclination to the horizon in all azimuth directions at all points of the terrain. These virtual horizons are used to map sky brightness to the rendering of the terrain. To evaluate our techniques, we use two Digital Elevation Models (DEMs)-of the Schell Creek Range of eastern Nevada and a portion of downtown Houston, Texas, developed from Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) data. Renderings based on the uniform diffuse illumination model show more detailed changes in shading than renderings based on a point source illumination model. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We examine the utility of linear mixture modelling in the sub-pixel analysis of Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) imagery to estimate the three key land cover components in an urban/suburban setting: impervious surface, managed/unmanaged lawn and tree cover. The relative effectiveness of two different endmember sets was also compared. The interior endmember set consisted of the median pixel value of the training pixels of each land cover and the exterior endmember set was the extreme pixel value. As a means of accuracy assessment, the resulting land cover estimates were compared with independent estimates obtained from the visual interpretation of digital orthophotography and classified IKONOS imagery. Impervious surface estimates from the Landsat ETM showed a high degree of similarity (RMS error (RMSE) within approximately + 10 to 15%) to that obtained using high spatial resolution digital orthophotography and IKONOS imagery. The partition of the vegetation component into tree vs grass cover was more problematic due to the greater spectral similarity between these land cover types with RMSE of approximately + 12 to 22%. The interior endmember set appeared to provide better differentiation between grass and urban tree cover than the exterior endmember set. The ability to separate the grass vs tree components in urban vegetation is of major importance to the study of the urban/suburban ecosystems as well as watershed assessment.
