[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce a set of measures based on straight lines to assess land development levels in high-resolution (1 m) panchromatic satellite images. Most urban areas locally (such as in a 400 x 400 M2 area) exhibit a preponderance of straight-line features, generally appearing in fairly simple quasi-periodic organizations. Wilderness and rural areas produce line structures in more random spatial arrangements. We use this observation to perform an initial triage on the image to restrict the attention of subsequent more computationally intensive analyses. Statistical measures based on straight lines guide the analysis. We base these measures on length, contrast, orientation, periodicity, and location. On these, we trained and tested parametric and nonparametric classifiers. These tests were for a two-class problem (urban versus rural). However, because our ultimate goal is to extract residential regions, we then extended these ideas to address the detection of suburban regions. To do so, some use of spatial coherence is required; suburban regions are especially difficult to detect. Therefore, we introduce a decision system to perform suburban region classification via an overlapping voting method for consensus discovery. Our data were taken from regions all around the world, which underscores the robustness of our approach. Based on extensive testing, we can report very promising results in distinguishing developed areas. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Accuracy assessment for remote sensing classification is commonly based on using an error matrix, or confusion table, which needs reference, or 'ground truthing', data to support. When undertaking change detection using numerous multi-temporal images, it is often difficult to make the accuracy assessment by the 'traditional' method, which typically requires simultaneous collection of reference data. In this study, we propose a new approach by arguing change rationality with post-classification comparison. Multitemporal Landsat TM images were classified for land use in an urban fringe area of Beijing, China and the post-classification comparison of these classified images shows change trajectories through the time series. These change trajectories were then analysed by assessing their rationality against a set of logical rules to separate cases of 'real land use change' and possible classification errors. The analvsis results show that the overall accuracy for land use change in the urban fringe area was 86%, with a fuzziness of 7%. Although it is argued that the uncertainty, still exists on classification accuracy assessed by this method. It nevertheless provides an alternative approach for more reasonable assessment when ideal simultaneous 'ground truthing' is not available. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This paper aims to show the usefulness of GIS and point pattern techniques for defining road-accident black zones within urban agglomerations. The location of road accidents is based on dynamic segmentation, address geocoding and intersection identification. One-dimensional (line) and two-dimensional (area) clustering techniques for road accidents are compared. Advantages and drawbacks are discussed in relation to network and traffic characteristics. Linear spatial clustering techniques appear to be better suited when traffic flows can be clearly identified along certain routes. For dense road networks with diffuse traffic patterns, two-dimensional techniques make it possible to identify accident-prone areas. The operationality of the techniques is illustrated by showing the impact of traffic-calming measures on the location and type of accidents in one Belgian town (Mechelen). [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing of urban heat islands (UHls) has traditionally used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as the indicator of vegetation abundance to estimate the land surface temperature (LST)-vegetation relationship. This study investigates the applicability of vegetation fraction derived from a spectral mixture model as an alternative indicator of vegetation abundance. This is based on examination of a Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) image of Indianapolis City, IN, USA, acquired on June 22, 2002. The transformed ETM+ image was unmixed into three fraction images (green vegetation, dry soil, and shade) with a constrained least-square solution. These fraction images were then used for land cover classification based on a hybrid classification procedure that combined maximum likelihood and decision tree algorithms. Results demonstrate that LST possessed a slightly stronger negative correlation with the unmixed vegetation fraction than with NDVI for all land cover types across the spatial resolution (30 to 960 m). Correlations reached their strongest at the 120-m resolution, which is believed to be the operational scale of LST, NDVI, and vegetation fraction images. Fractal analysis of image texture shows that the complexity of these images increased initially with pixel aggregation and peaked around 120 m, but decreased with farther aggregation. The spatial variability of texture in LST was positively correlated with those in NDVI and in vegetation fraction. The interplay between thermal and vegetation dynamics in the context of different land cover types leads to the variations in spectral radiance and texture in LST. These variations are also present in the other imagery, and are responsible for the spatial patterns of urban heat islands. It is suggested that the areal measure of vegetation abundance by unmixed vegetation fraction has a more direct correspondence with the radiative, thermal, and moisture properties of the Earth's surface that determine LST. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineIndex. décimale : 33.30 Photogrammétrie numérique Résumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we investigate the estimation of pose of images provided by a rigid stereo rig on a mobile mapping System called STEREOPOLIS developped at IGN in the ARCHI project of the MATIS laboratory. In this System, the terrestrial photographies are a georeferencing device. We use the images as a verticality measurement device by finding the vertical and horizontal vanishing points of both images of the stereo rig at the same time which improves robustness and accuracy of the estimation. We also use our stereo baseline as a photogrammetric range measurement provided by dene stereo matching. The relative sensor pose estimation between successive acquisitions (t) and (t+dt) of the System can thus be seen as the problem of finding the rigid transformation between the two set of clouds. We achieve this by extracting and matching 3D planes by FFT correlation on corresponding facade orthoimages. The matching of lie points and segments between images at (t) and (t+dt) is due to the reduction of the search space space given by the surface models and the relative pose estimated by our 3D plane matching process.
