[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) There is an underuse of geological knowledge in society. Therefore, an unused potential of more informed decision-making and planning as well as improved solutions on societal challenges exist. The aim of this study was to better understand the geological map user and to improve the usability of geological map products. With the aim of improving graphical communication through maps and images, visual research methods are used. The sketch map method, which has been used since the 1960s, is used here to elicit information about people and their image subsurface geology of a city. The participants include students in area planning and experts within geology. Content, semiotic and visual analyses were performed on the sketches produced by the participants. The results show limited knowledge of geology and a lack of common geological language, both graphical and linguistic. Improved ways of representing the subsurface are identified, which can be used as input to more intuitive future designs. Adapting to the user’s image of subsurface geology, usability could be increased by using plain language, adding landmarks, pictographic symbols and patterns to geological visualizations. This could potentially lower the user threshold, trigger interest and raise the awareness of local urban geology. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Gridded population results at a fine resolution are important for optimizing the allocation of resources and researching population migration. For example, the data are crucial for epidemic control and natural disaster relief. In this study, the random forest model was applied to multisource data to estimate the population distribution in impervious areas at a 30 m spatial resolution in Chongqing, Southwest China. The community population data from the Chinese government were used to validate the estimation accuracy. Compared with the other regression techniques, the random forest regression method produced more accurate results (R2 = 0.7469, RMSE = 2785.04 and p Numéro de notice : A2020-308 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : GEOMATIQUE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.3390/ijgi9060369 Date de publication en ligne : 03/06/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.3390/ijgi9060369 Format de la ressource électronique : URL Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=95155

[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Urbanisation generates greater population densities and an increase in anthropogenic heat generation. These factors elevate the urban–rural air temperature (Ta) difference, thus generating the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon. Ta is used in the fields of public health and epidemiology to quantify deaths attributable to heat in cities around the world: the presence of UHI can exacerbate exposure to high temperatures during summer periods, thereby increasing the risk of heat-related mortality. Measuring and monitoring the spatial patterns of Ta in urban contexts is challenging due to the lack of a good network of weather stations. This study aims to produce a parsimonious model to retrieve maximum Ta (Tmax) at high spatio-temporal resolution using Earth Observation (EO) satellite data. The novelty of this work is twofold: (i) it will produce daily estimations of Tmax for London at 1 km2 during the summertime between 2006 and 2017 using advanced statistical techniques and satellite-derived predictors, and (ii) it will investigate for the first time the predictive power of the gradient boosting algorithm to estimate Tmax for an urban area. In this work, 6 regression models were calibrated with 6 satellite products, 3 geospatial features, and 29 meteorological stations. Stepwise linear regression was applied to create 9 groups of predictors, which were trained and tested on each regression method. This study demonstrates the potential of machine learning algorithms to predict Tmax: the gradient boosting model with a group of five predictors (land surface temperature, Julian day, normalised difference vegetation index, digital elevation model, solar zenith angle) was the regression model with the best performance (R² = 0.68, MAE = 1.60 °C, and RMSE = 2.03 °C). This methodological approach is capable of being replicated in other UK cities, benefiting national heat-related mortality assessments since the data (provided by NASA and the UK Met Office) and programming languages (Python) sources are free and open. This study provides a framework to produce a high spatio-temporal resolution of Tmax, assisting public health researchers to improve the estimation of mortality attributable to high temperatures. In addition, the research contributes to practice and policy-making by enhancing the understanding of the locations where mortality rates may increase due to heat. Therefore, it enables a more informed decision-making process towards the prioritisation of actions to mitigate heat-related mortality amongst the vulnerable population. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) It has become increasingly important in spatial equity studies to understand activity spaces – where people conduct regular out-of-home activities. Big data can advance the identification of activity spaces and the understanding of spatial equity. Using the Los Angeles metropolitan area for the case study, this paper employs geotagged Twitter data to delineate activity spaces with two spatial measures: first, the average distance between users’ home location and activity locations; and second, the area covered between home and activity locations. The paper also finds significant relationship between the spatial measures of activity spaces and neighborhood spatial and socioeconomic characteristics. This research enriches the literature that aims to address spatial equity in activity spaces and demonstrates the applicability of big data in urban socio-spatial research. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) We introduce an approach for updating older tree inventories with geographic coordinates using street-level panorama images and a global optimization framework for tree instance matching. Geolocations of trees in inventories until the early 2000s where recorded using street addresses whereas newer inventories use GPS. Our method retrofits older inventories with geographic coordinates to allow connecting them with newer inventories to facilitate long-term studies on tree mortality etc. What makes this problem challenging is the different number of trees per street address, the heterogeneous appearance of different tree instances in the images, ambiguous tree positions if viewed from multiple images and occlusions. To solve this assignment problem, we (i) detect trees in Google street-view panoramas using deep learning, (ii) combine multi-view detections per tree into a single representation, (iii) and match detected trees with given trees per street address with a global optimization approach. Experiments for trees in 5 cities in California, USA, show that we are able to assign geographic coordinates to 38% of the street trees, which is a good starting point for long-term studies on the ecosystem services value of street trees at large scale.
