[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Visual localization is a useful alternative to standard localization techniques. In a typical scenario, features are extracted from images captured by cameras and compared with geo-referenced databases. Location information is then inferred from the matching results. Conventional schemes mainly use low-level visual features. They offer good accuracy but suffer from scalability issues. In order to assist localization in large urban areas, this work explores a different path by utilizing high-level semantic information. It is found that object information in a street view can facilitate localization. A novel descriptor scheme called “semantic signature” is proposed to summarize this information. A semantic signature consists of type and angle information of visible objects at a spatial location. Several metrics and protocols are proposed for signature comparison and retrieval. They illustrate different trade-offs between accuracy and complexity. Extensive simulation results confirm the potential of the proposed scheme in large-scale applications. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate and timely information regarding the extent and spatial distribution of urban areas on regional and global scales is crucially important for both scientific and policy-making communities. Stable nighttime light (NTL) data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) provides a unique proxy of human settlement and activity, which has been used in the mapping and analysis of urban areas and urbanization dynamics. However, blooming and saturation effects of DMSP/OLS NTL data are two unresolved problems in regional urban area mapping and analysis. This study proposed a new urban index termed the Temperature and Vegetation Adjusted NTL Urban Index (TVANUI). It is intended to reduce blooming and saturation effects and to enhance urban features by combining DMSP/OLS NTL data with Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer onboard the Terra satellite. The proposed index was evaluated in two study areas by comparison with established urban indices. The results demonstrated the proposed TVANUI was effective in enhancing the variation of DMSP/OLS light in urban areas and in reducing blooming and saturation effects, showing better performance than three established urban indices. The TVANUI also significantly outperformed the established urban indices in urban area mapping using both the global-fixed threshold and the local-optimal threshold methods. Thus, the proposed TVANUI provides a useful variable for urban area mapping and analysis on regional scale, as well as for urbanization dynamics using time-series DMSP/OLS and related satellite data.
Urban morphology is controlled by local planning regulations that are expressed through legal texts. The objective of this article is to compare two models, SimPLU3D and MorVeR, which transform the urban morphological constraints into volumes and to meet the potential and limitations of both computational approaches. The relation between the urban rules with the authorized volume leads to the optimal building volume "geometrically" regulatory volume which better optimizes the urban constraints.

[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) The use of disparity information is computationally coste-effective for 3D-assisted mapping applications. However, off-nadir satellite images over dense urban areas suffer from severe occlusion. Therefore, large gaps will be created due to the unsuccessful matching in the occluded areas. Commonly, gap interpolation produces misleading information that destroys the quality of the subsequent information extraction application. Hence, the more reliable solution is to fill the occlusion gaps by supplementary data. However, disparity maps are the co-relation of one stereo pair. Hence, supplementary disparity maps cannot be directly generated and applied. Thus, this paper introduces the Double Projection Plane (DPP) method for constructing disparity proportionality among multi-view stereo satellite images and calculating analytically the transferring scales required for producing supplementary disparity data. Accordingly, based on multi-view stereo satellite images, this method is promising to provide gap-and-outlier-free disparity maps that have the potential to replace the need for elevation models to some extent.
