[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) A proper characterization of land-use types is critical for constructing generalization constraints to guide and control landuse data generalization. This paper focused on identification and utilization of their importance based upon land-use distributions and application themes. First, this importance was identified using a three-step method that links a diversity index, a multiple attribute decision model and a spatial association analysis. Second, with the importance, a mathematical function was designed to determine minimum area thresholds of land-use polygons as an example of generalization constraints. Third, the importance was used to assist in the selection of generalization operators and evaluation of generalization outcomes. Fourth, a land-use dataset at 1:10 000, describing the land use of a typical rural area in Hubei province of China, was generalized towards a 1:50 000 dataset to verify the effects of the presented method and function. Three additional tests were implemented to analyze the sensitivity of the importance of land-use types on setting the minimum area threshold and generalization operations. The outcome showed that the proposed methods and functions make land-use data generalization more adaptable for in-use datasets and applications. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) Medium-scale historical maps are often the only cartographic source of former forest area distribution on a regional level. In conjunction with a database of the current distribution of species or functional traits, maps may be valuable tool for studying the impact of previous land use on ecosystems. In this study a heterogeneous set of historical maps was used to reconstruct the multi-temporal pattern of the forest area in a moderately forested region (5,180 km2) of southern Latvia during the last 220 years. Changes in the total forest cover were assessed in four time slices and compared with available historical statistical data. To validate the obtained multi-temporal data for ecological studies, the impact of continuous forest cover on the present-day mean stand area and tree species richness derived from the present-day forest inventory database of 94,886 stands was quantified by bivariate and regression analyses. We found no significant impact of inaccuracy of the historical maps on the entire forest continuity pattern of the study area. In particular, the diversity metrics dependencies on the forest continuity can be described by quadratic regression models with coefficients of determination close to one. We also found that the mean stand area is for about 18% larger in woodlands with longer forest continuity irrespective of the forest type. The older woodland the less difference was found between boreal deciduous and nemoral deciduous forests in terms of tree species richness. This book challenges some commonly-held ideas about biofuels, bioenergy and energy cropping, particularly that energy crops pose an inherent threat to ecosystems, which must be mitigated. The book recognises that certain energy crops (e.g. oil palm for biodiesel) have generated sustainability concerns, but also asks the question "is there a better way?" of using energy crops to strategically enhance ecosystem functions. It draws on numerous case studies, including where energy crops have had negative outcomes as well as well as cases where energy crops have produced benefits for ecosystem health, such as soil and water protection from the cropping of willow and poplar in Europe and the use of mallee eucalypts to fight salinity in Western Australia. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Limited development ecological zones (LDEZs) are often located in poverty-stricken, ecologically vulnerable areas where ethnic minorities reside. Studies on optimal spatial land-use allocation in LDEZs can promote economic and intensive land use, improve soil quality, facilitate local socioeconomic development, and maintain environmental stability. In this study, we optimized spatial land-use allocations in an LDEZ using the geographic information system (GIS) and a genetic ant colony algorithm (GACA). The multi-objective function considers economic benefits and ecological green equivalents, and improves soil erosion. We developed the GACA by integrating a genetic algorithm (GA) with an ant colony algorithm (ACA). This avoids a large number of redundant iterations and the low efficiency of the GA, and the slow convergence speed of the ACA. The study area is located in Pengyang County, Ningxia, China, which is a typical LDEZ. The land-use data were interpreted from remote sensing (RS) images and GIS. We determined the optimal spatial land-use allocations in the LDEZ using the GACA in the GIS environment. We compared the original and optimal spatial schemes in terms of economic benefits, ecological green equivalents, and soil erosion. The results of the GACA were superior to the original allocation, the ACA, and the multi-objective genetic algorithm, in terms of the optimum, time, and robust performance indexes. We also present some suggestions for the reasonable development and protection of LDEZs. Le changement d'affectation des terres est un processus complexe. C'est pourquoi le développement de modèles dynamiques pour représenter ce processus constitue une tâche remplie de défis. L'arbre de décision (AD) est une méthode d'apprentissage machine qui a la capacité d'extraire des tendances et de produire un modèle représentatif qui utilise les données géospatiales historiques. Même si l'arbre de décision est utilisé en télédétection comme méthode de classification, il n'est pas suffisamment examiné dans la science de l'aménagement du territoire. L'objectif principal du présent article de recherche est d'examiner la capacité de la méthode de l'arbre de décision pour modéliser le changement d'affectation des terres urbaines. Nous avons utilisé un nombre varié d'attributs pour trois municipalités dans la ville de Belgrade en République de Serbie. L'utilisation des terres est représentée à l'aide de neuf classes d'utilisation des terres sur trois différentes périodes de temps au cours des années 2003, 2007 et 2011. Les statistiques « kappa » et la courbe pondérée de la fonction d'efficacité du récepteur (CFER) ont été utilisées pour comparer les extrants du modèle à des jeux de données réelles d'utilisation des terres pour l'année 2011. Les valeurs maximales obtenues pour les statistiques kappa et la CFER indiquent que l'arbre de décision est une méthode utile pour modéliser le changement d'affectation des terres urbaines. En outre, l'arbre de classification qui en découle produit de l'information sur la relation entre les facteurs de causalité pris en compte et les changements d'affectation des terres et permet de mieux comprendre le processus de changement.
