[Termes descripteurs IGN] réductionRésumé : (Auteur) Map mashups are often visually chaotic and methods for solving this chaos are required. We introduce a set of clutter reduction criteria for evaluating methods to reduce clutter in map mashups. We present a synthesis of cartographic generalisation operators for point data and clutter reduction methods used in information visualisation and evaluate the methods against the criteria. The resulting evaluation table can be used in finding suitable clutter reduction methods for cases of map mashups with different primary criteria, and more specifically in finding methods that cover each others’ limitations. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents an algorithmic approach to the problem of finding symmetries in building footprints, which is motivated by map generalization tasks such as symmetry-preserving building simplification and symmetry-aware grouping and aggregation. Moreover, symmetries in building footprints may be used for landmark selection and building classification. The presented method builds up on existing methods for symmetry detection in vector data that use algorithms for string matching. It detects both mirror symmetries and repetitions of geometric structures. In addition to the existing vector-based methods, the new method finds partial symmetries in polygons while allowing for small geometric errors and, based on a least-squares approach, computes optimally adjusted mirror axes and assesses their quality. Finally, the problem of grouping symmetry relations is addressed with an algorithm that finds mirror axes that are almost collinear. The presented approach was tested on a large building dataset of the metropolitan Boston area and its results were compared with results that were manually generated in an empirical test. The symmetry relations that the participants of the test considered most important were found by the algorithm. Future work will deal with the integration of information on symmetry relations into algorithms for map generalization. [Termes descripteurs IGN] reconstruction 3D du bâtiRésumé : (Auteur) 3D city models offered by digital map providers typically consist of several thousands or even millions of individual buildings. Those buildings are usually generated in an automated fashion from high resolution cadastral and remote sensing data and can be very detailed. However, not in every application such a high degree of detail is desirable. One way to remove complexity is to aggregate individual buildings, simplify the ground plan and assign an appropriate average building height. This task is computationally complex because it includes the combinatorial optimization problem of determining which subset of the original set of buildings should best be aggregated to meet the demands of an application. In this article, we introduce approaches to express different aspects of the aggregation of LoD 1 building models in the form of Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) problems. The advantage of this approach is that for linear (and some quadratic) MIP problems, sophisticated software exists to find exact solutions (global optima) with reasonable effort. We also propose two different heuristic approaches based on the region growing strategy and evaluate their potential for optimization by comparing their performance to a MIP-based approach. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The generalization of area features is a very important topic in digital map generalization, particularly in thematic map generalization. The operations used in area generalization, will cause changes in the geometry and thematic attributes of area features and the topological relationships between them. Very limited quantitative measures, especially for semantics, are available to describe the effect of generalization when multiple objects are involved or when the entire map needs to be characterized. Therefore, the aim of this study is to provide some quantitative measures for the changes (especially in semantics) that have occurred during generalization. A set of quantitative measures of data quality, i.e. accuracy, consistency, and completeness, has been developed to assess such effects. The effect of generalization on area features are compared between two approaches, geometry-based merging and theme-based aggregation. An experimental test has also been carried out to illustrate their differences in terms of the proposed quality measures, which demonstrates the practical usefulness of these measures. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a methodology to assess the quality of generalisation. Generalisation consists in representing in a simplified way a geographic space, according to the scale and to the objectives of the map. The automation of this process makes the derivation of data easier, but the data quality of the results is often not evaluated. This paper deals with the definition of generalisation evolution reference and of an assessment model. A generalisation evolution reference is the definition of the expected evolution of a geographical feature property during generalisation. The assessment model is based on (1) a data characterisation in their initial and final state at different level of analysis (micro and meso), (2) a data quality assessment from the comparison of the two previous characterisations and (3) the aggregation of the various assessment results to summarise data quality. The assessment algorithm has been implemented and the method has been tested to assess the generalisation of a small urban area. A visualisation tool of assessment results has been developed to validate the generalisation evaluation. Results are presented and discussed at the end of the paper.
