The generalized Chinese restaurant franchise (gCRF) is a segmentation-then-classification-like method to fuse very high resolution (VHR) PAN and MS images for classification, which has the limitation the same as that of the general segmentation-then-classification methods that segmentation errors will affect the subsequent classification. The problems of gCRF are that during the segmentation step, the spatial coherence in the image plane is deficient and the global clusters without spatial position information are used for segmentation, which may lead to undersegmented and disconnected regions in the segmentation results and decrease classification accuracy. In this paper, we propose an improved model, which overcomes the problems of the gCRF during the segmentation step, to increase the classification accuracy by the following two ways: 1) building the spatial coherence in the image plane by introducing neighborhood information of superpixels to construct the subimages and 2) using localized clusters with spatial location information instead of global clusters to measure the similarity between superpixels and segments. The experimental results show that the problems of undersegmentation and disconnected segments are both alleviated, resulting in better classification results in terms of the visual and quantitative aspects. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning (ALS) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) systems are effective ways to capture the 3D information of forests from complementary perspectives. Registration of the two sources of point clouds is necessary for various forestry applications. Since the forest point clouds show irregular and natural point distributions, standard registration methods working on geometric keypoints (e.g., points, lines, and planes) are likely to fail. Hence, we propose a novel method to register the ALS and TLS forest point clouds through density analysis of the crowns. The proposed method extracts mode-based keypoints by the mean shift method and aligns them by maximum likelihood estimation. Firstly, the differences in the point densities of the ALS and TLS crowns are minimized to produce analogous modes, which represent the local maxima of the underlying probability density function (PDF). The mode-based keypoints are then aligned through the coherent point drift (CPD) algorithm, which is independent of the descriptor similarities and considers the alignment as a maximum likelihood estimation problem. The sets of keypoints derived from the two data sources need not be equal. Finally, the recovered transformation is applied to the original point clouds and refined through the standard iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm. In contrast to some of the existing methods, the proposed method avoids the geometric description of the forest point clouds. Furthermore, additional information such as tree diameter or height is not required to evaluate the similarities. The experiments in this study were conducted in a Scandinavian boreal forest, located in Evo, Finland. The proposed method was tested on four datasets (ALS data: a circle with a diameter of 60 m, multi-scan TLS data: 32 × 32 m) with heterogeneous tree species and structures. The results showed that the proposed probabilistic-based method obtains a good performance with a 3D distance residual of 0.069 m, and improved the accuracy of the registration when compared with the existing methods. Résumé : (auteur) Registration is one of the most important tasks in mobile laser scanning (MLS) point cloud processing. This paper firstly reviews existing target‐free matching techniques as well as methods to evaluate the quality of the registration. Next, a new error metric is introduced that takes into account the residuals of check planes as well as their orientation. Experiments using real datasets in combination with reference data were performed to evaluate the suitability of these metrics. The proposed error metric proved to be more suitable for evaluating the quality of point cloud registration than state‐of‐the‐art equivalents. The results also indicate that least squares plane fitting is the best technique for MLS point cloud registration. Note de contenu : INTRODUCTION

[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) We present a new method for image-only camera relocalisation composed of a fast image indexing retrieval step followed by pose refinement based on ICP (Iterative Closest Point). The first step aims to find an initial pose for the query by evaluating images similarity with low dimensional global deep descriptors. Subsequently, we predict with a fully convolutional deep encoder-decoder neural network a dense depth map from the image query. We use this depth map to create a local point cloud and refine the initial query pose using an ICP algorithm. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our new approach on various indoor scenes. Compared to learned pose regression methods, our proposal can be used on multiple scenes without the need of a specific weights-setup for each scene, while showing equivalent results.
