[Termes descripteurs IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) Protected areas (PAs) are essential for ensuring the sustainability of biodiversity and protecting human lives. Efficient and sustainable protection require cooperation of all stakeholders and anticipate the coherence of conservation aims and human use. PAs can limit the human activities and land use alternatives significantly. Participatory planning and monitoring can help to achieve the protection goals and 3D GIS can serve as the base platform for planning. This study investigates the potential of 3D GIS with high-resolution datasets for accurate definition of PA boundaries and demonstrates a case study in Cesme Peninsula, Turkey. The PA boundaries have been examined with respect to the property ownership boundaries and buildings using the 3D city model of Cesme. A conceptual approach for the determination of PA boundaries is proposed. The results show that 3D GIS can support the ecosystem conservation efforts while observing the interests of all stakeholders at the same time. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This research is motivated by the widespread use of desktop environments in the lab and by the recent trend of conducting real-world eye-tracking experiments to investigate pedestrian navigation. Despite the existing significant differences between the real world and the desktop environments, how pedestrians’ visual behavior in real environments differs from that in desktop environments is still not well understood. Here, we report a study that recorded eye movements for a total of 82 participants while they were performing five common navigation tasks in an unfamiliar urban environment (N = 39) and in a desktop environment (N = 43). By analyzing where the participants allocated their visual attention, what objects they fixated on, and how they transferred their visual attention among objects during navigation, we found similarities and significant differences in the general fixation indicators, spatial fixation distributions and attention to the objects of interest. The results contribute to the ongoing debate over the validity of using desktop environments to investigate pedestrian navigation by providing insights into how pedestrians allocate their attention to visual stimuli to accomplish navigation tasks in the two environments. Therefore, an unused potential of more informed decision-making and planning as well as improved solutions on societal challenges exist. The aim of this study was to better understand the geological map user and to improve the usability of geological map products. With the aim of improving graphical communication through maps and images, visual research methods are used. The sketch map method, which has been used since the 1960s, is used here to elicit information about people and their image subsurface geology of a city. The participants include students in area planning and experts within geology. Content, semiotic and visual analyses were performed on the sketches produced by the participants. The results show limited knowledge of geology and a lack of common geological language, both graphical and linguistic. Improved ways of representing the subsurface are identified, which can be used as input to more intuitive future designs. Adapting to the user’s image of subsurface geology, usability could be increased by using plain language, adding landmarks, pictographic symbols and patterns to geological visualizations. This could potentially lower the user threshold, trigger interest and raise the awareness of local urban geology. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Landmark visual salience (characterized by features that contrast with their surroundings and visual peculiarities) and semantic salience (characterized by features with unusual or important meaning and content in the environment) are two important factors that affect an individual’s visual attention during wayfinding. However, empirical evidence regarding which factor dominates visual guidance during indoor wayfinding is rare, especially in real-world environments. In this study, we assumed that semantic salience dominates the guidance of visual attention, which means that semantic salience will correlate with participants’ fixations more significantly than visual salience. Notably, in previous studies, semantic salience was shown to guide visual attention in static images or familiar scenes in a laboratory environment. To validate this assumption, first, we collected the eye movement data of 22 participants as they found their way through a building. We then computed the landmark visual and semantic salience using computer vision models and questionnaires, respectively. Finally, we conducted correlation tests to verify our assumption. The results failed to validate our assumption and show that the role of salience in visual guidance in a real-world wayfinding process is different from the role of salience in perceiving static images or scenes in a laboratory. Visual salience dominates visual attention during indoor wayfinding, but the roles of salience in visual guidance are mixed across different landmark classes and tasks. The results provide new evidence for understanding how pedestrians visually interpret landmark information during real-world indoor wayfinding. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping applications display multi-scale maps where zooming in and out triggers the display of different maps at different scales. Multi-scale maps strongly augmented the potential uses of maps, compared to the traditional single-scaled paper maps. But the exploration of the multi-scale maps can be cognitively difficult for users because the content of the maps can be very different at different scales. This paper seeks to identify the factors in the design of map content and style that increase or decrease the exploration cognitive load, in order to improve multi-scales map design. We studied sixteen existing examples of multi-scale maps to identify these factors that influence a fluid zooming interaction. Several different analyses were conducted on these sixteen multi-scale maps. We first conducted a guided visual exploration of the maps, and a detailed study of the scales of the maps, to identify general trends of good practices (e.g. the WMTS standard that defines zoom levels is widely used) and potential ways of improvement (e.g. a same map is often used at multiple successive zoom levels). Then, we focused on the visual complexity of the multi-scale maps by analyzing how it varies, continuously or not, across scales, using clutter measures, which showed a peak of complexity at zoom level 12 of the WMTS standard. Finally, we studied how buildings and roads are subject to abstraction changes across scales (e.g. at what zoom level individual buildings turn into built-up areas), which can be one of the causes of exploration difficulties. We identified some good practices to reduce the impact of abstraction changes, for instance by mixing different levels of abstraction in the same map.
