[Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (Auteur) Increasing use of geo-information in "smart phones" and PDAs has led to users being disoriented by map displays on small screens, while outdated maps, storage capacity and processing power further inhibit use. High-bandwidth wireless connections resolve some such limitations but map display remains an impediment to wider use. The authors describe research into dynamic presentation of maps at the desired level of detail. [Termes IGN] utilisateur nomadeRésumé : (Auteur) The Intelligent Map Agents (IMA) is an agent-based framework aimed at providing access to, and support for the manipulation of, spatial information. The IMA is designed as an open architecture that can accommodate a large number of mobile users and services possibly distributed across a wide geographical area. Today's users are mobile and are equipped with small powerful devices. Using wireless communication, these devices are/will be capable of exchanging digital data and voice from almost any location. In this paper, we present the IMA architecture which is aimed at replacing the monolithic approach to geographic information systems with a new dynamic, lean, and customizable system supporting spatially-oriented applications. We present this vision, describe the design of the IMA and discuss a sample application. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of map design is to create, in the mind of map users, an abstraction of the real world appropriate to the map's purpose. The success of the design depends not only on the cartographer's skill but also on the user's ability to read the map and on the particular circumstances of its use. If the user does not understand the meaning of the map symbols, this may lead to frustration or misinterpretations. If, in a mobile map context, users can be provided, in real-time, with map symbols adapted to particular use situations and user preferences, more effective map reading could result. This paper studies those user aspects where map symbols and other visualization are adapted for mobile users' specific needs. A discussion on the importance of understanding cartographic principles in mobile map design is followed by the description of an adaptive mobile map service implemented within an EU project called "GiMoDig." This service delivers maps with different point of interest (PoI) symbols and different map designs for varying user groups in different use situations. The paper describes how the cartographic design was evaluated and how the intuitivity of the map symbols was tested. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future research topics are discussed.
