[Termes descripteurs IGN] translationRésumé : (auteur) We present a novel structure from motion pipeline, which estimates motion and wiry 3D structure from imaged line segments across multiple views. Although the position and orientation of line segments can be determined more accurately than point features, the instability of their endpoints and the fact that lines are not constrained by epipolar geometry diverted most research focus away to point-based methods. In our approach, we tackle the problem of instable endpoints by utilizing relaxed constraints on their positions, both during matching and as well in the following bundle adjustment stage. Furthermore, we gain efficiency in estimating trifocal image relations by decoupling rotation and translation. To this end, a novel linear solver for relative translation estimation given rotations from five line correspondences in three views is introduced. Extensive experiments on long image sequences show that our line-based structure from motion pipeline advantageously complements point-based methods, giving more meaningful 3D representation for indoor scenarios. [Termes descripteurs IGN] surface concaveRésumé : (Auteur) Critical keylines, such as concave and convex edges of a building façade, can be lost in photogrammetric recognition procedures. To solve this problem and to reconstruct quasi-planar 3D façades automatically and precisely, a set of algorithms and techniques for the automatic recognition of lines and 3D reconstruction is proposed. This includes: (1) a procedure for line-segment matching that satisfies the spatial requirements of a 3D scene based on “global independence” and “local dependence”; (2) a technique of generalised point bundle block adjustment combined with spatial line constraints (in the form of virtual observations) to control the propagation of error; and (3) the methods of perceptual organisation, plane fitting and plane–plane intersection are suggested to acquire the critical keylines corresponding to concave and convex building edges. Experimental results show that these new algorithms are feasible and applicable to recognition and 3D reconstruction. Recommendations for recognition methods are provided depending on whether or not a priori topological relationships are available between the planes under consideration. [Termes descripteurs IGN] télémétrie laser mobileRésumé : (auteur) Laser scanning techniques have been widely used to capture three-dimensional (3D) point clouds of various scenes (e.g. urban scenes). In particular, airborne laser scanning (ALS) and mobile laser scanning (MLS), terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) are effective to capture point clouds from top or side view. Registering the complimentary point clouds captured by ALS and MLS/TLS provides an aligned data source for many purposes (e.g. 3D reconstruction). Among these MLS can be directly geo-referenced to ALS according to the equipped position systems. For small scanning areas or dense building areas, TLS is used instead of MLS. However, registering ALS and TLS datasets suffers from poor automation and robustness because of few overlapping areas and sparse corresponding geometric features. A robust method for the registration of TLS and ALS datasets is proposed, which has four key steps. (1) extracts building outlines from TLS and ALS data sets independently; (2) obtains the potential matching pairs of outlines according to the geometric constraints between building outlines; (3) constructs the Laplacian matrices of the extracted building outlines to model the topology between the geometric features; (4) calculates the correlation coefficients of the extracted geometric features by decomposing the Laplacian matrices into the spectral space, providing correspondences between the extracted features for coarse registration. Finally, the multi-line adjustment strategy is employed for the fine registration. The robustness and accuracy of the proposed method are verified using field data, demonstrating a reliable and stable solution to accurately register ALS and TLS datasets. [Termes descripteurs IGN] signal lidarRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, airborne LiDAR sensors have shown remarkable performance in the mapping of forest vegetation. This experimental study looks at LiDAR data at the scale of individual pulses to elucidate the sources behind interpulse variation in backscattering. Close-range photogrammetry was used for obtaining the canopy reference measurements at the ratio scale. The experiments illustrated different orientation techniques in the field, LiDAR acquisitions and photogrammetry in both leaf-on and leaf-off conditions, and two-waveform recording LiDAR sensors. The intrafootprint branch silhouettes in zenith-looking images, in which the camera, footprint, and LiDAR sensor were collinear, were extracted and contrasted with LiDAR backscattering. An enhanced planimetric match (refinement of strip matching) was achieved by shifting the pulses in a strip and searching for the maximal correlation between the silhouette and LiDAR intensity. The relative silhouette explained up to 80–90% of the interpulse variation. We tested whether accounting for the Gaussian spread of intrafootprint irradiance would improve the correlations, but the effect was blurred by small-scale geometric noise. Accounting for receiver gain variations in the Leica ALS60 sensor data strengthened the dependences. The size of the vegetation objects required for triggering a LiDAR observation was analyzed. We demonstrated the use of LiDAR pulses adjacent to canopy vegetation, which did not trigger a canopy echo, for canopy mapping. Pulses not triggering an echo constitute the complement to the actual canopy. We conclude that field photogrammetry is a useful tool for mapping forest canopies from below and that quantitative analysis is feasible even at the scale of single pulses for enhanced understanding of LiDAR observations from vegetation. [Termes descripteurs IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) An indirect method for the georeferencing of 3D point clouds obtained with terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data using control lines is presented. This technique could be used for rapid data acquisition where resources do not permit the use of expensive navigation sensors or the placement of pre-signalised targets. The most important characteristic is the development of a mathematical model based on the principle that the direction vector of the TLS straight line is coplanar with the plane defined by the origin of the TLS system, one endpoint of a control line and the direction vector of the control line in the ground reference coordinate system. The transformation parameters are estimated by minimising the distance between the control lines and their corresponding TLS straight lines. The proposed method was tested using both simulated and real data, and the advantages of this new approach are compared with conventional surveying methods.
