[Termes descripteurs IGN] Time-geographyRésumé : (auteur) As the distinction between online and physical spaces rapidly degrades, social media have now become an integral component of how many people's everyday experiences are mediated. As such, increasing interest has emerged in exploring how the content shared through those online platforms comes to contribute to the collaborative creation of places in physical space at the urban scale. Exploring digital geographies of social media data using methods such as qualitative coding (i.e., content labelling) is a flexible but complex task, commonly limited to small samples due to its impracticality over large datasets. In this paper, we propose a new tool for studies in digital geographies, bridging qualitative and quantitative approaches, able to learn a set of arbitrary labels (qualitative codes) on a small, manually-created sample and apply the same labels on a larger set. We introduce a semi-supervised, deep neural network approach to classify geo-located social media posts based on their textual and image content, as well as geographical and temporal aspects. Our innovative approach is rooted in our understanding of social media posts as augmentations of the time-space configurations that places are, and it comprises a stacked multi-modal autoencoder neural network to create joint representations of text and images, and a spatio-temporal graph convolution neural network for semi-supervised classification. The results presented in this paper show that our approach performs the classification of social media content with higher accuracy than traditional machine learning models as well as two state-of-art deep learning frameworks. Many VGI projects lack standard geospatial data quality assurance procedures, and the reliability of contributors remains in question. Traditional approaches rely on comparing VGI to an “authoritative” or “gold standard” dataset to assess quality. This study investigates VGI quality by analysing the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database in Ottawa‐Gatineau, focusing on historical map features and contributor data to gain an understanding of how users are contributing to the database, and their ability to do so accurately. Unsupervised machine learning analyses expose a cluster of experienced contributors classified as “OSM validators/experts”, which are then further used to attribute data quality. They are identified through a combination of strong contribution loadings associated with the use and experience of advanced OSM editors, and weaker loadings associated with feature creation and frequency of contributions leading to further correction. Limitations are discussed with implications for future work. With the growing amount of data, there is little doubt that a potentially wider community can benefit from open access to them. Additionally, open data add to the transparency of research and can be considered as an essential feature of science. However, data anonymization is a complex task and the unique characteristics of PPGIS add to this complexity. PPGIS data often include personal spatial and non-spatial information, which essentially require different approaches for anonymization. In this study, we first identify different privacy concerns and then develop a PPGIS data anonymization strategy to overcome them for an open PPGIS data. Specifically, this article introduces a context-sensitive spatial anonymization method to protect individual home locations while maintaining their spatial resolution for mapping purposes. Furthermore, this study empirically evaluates the effects of data anonymization on PPGIS data quality. The results indicate that a satisfactory level of anonymization can be reached using this approach. Moreover, the assessment results indicate that the environmental and home range measurements as well as their intercorrelations are not significantly biased by the anonymization. However, necessary analytical measures such as use of larger spatial units is recommendable when anonymized data is used. In this study, European data protection regulations were used as the legal guidelines. However, adaptation of methods employed in this study may be also relevant to other countries where comparable regulations exist. Although specifically targeted at PPGIS data, what is discussed in this paper can be applicable to other similar spatial datasets as well. Crowdsourced social media data present a valuable opportunity to develop bottom‐up inferences of places that are integral to social activities and settings. Conventional location‐led approaches use a predefined spatial unit to associate data and space with places, which cannot capture the richness of urban places (i.e., spatial extents and their dynamic functions). This article develops a name‐led framework to overcome these limitations in using social media data to study urban places. The framework first derives place names from georeferenced Twitter data combining text mining and spatial point pattern analysis, then estimates the spatial extents by spatial clustering, and further extracts their dynamic functions with time, which makes up a complete place profile. The framework is tested on a case study in Camden Borough, London and the results are evaluated through comparisons to the Foursquare point of interest data. This name‐led approach enables the shift from space‐based analysis to place‐based analysis of urban space. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This paper advances the state-of-the-art in methodology design for empirical evaluation of (geo)visual analytics software. Specifically, we describe the process of design, development and application of a prototypical user study tailored to the evaluation of complex geovisual analytics tools that focus on social media analysis. We fist perform a synthesis of existing theory and best practices for software evaluation of comparable systems. We then demonstrate how the product of said synthesis – a methodological ‘check list’ – can be used to inform a proof-of-concept user study of an actual geovisual analytics software system. The resulting user study design accommodates for the use of real geographic social media datasets, the complexity of the intended analytical process, and for the learning challenges faced by the participants working with a fully-functional and mature geovisual analytics application, and is likely representative of a wide range of evaluation scenarios in (geo)visual analytics. A complete summary of all the study instruments is included to encourage their scrutiny, reuse and modification by others. Finally, we have discovered that participants’ curiosity and desire for autonomy played a noticeable role in the evaluation process – something not previously reported.
