[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation models (DEMs), which can occur in the form of digital surface models (DSMs) or digital terrain models (DTMs), are widely used as important geospatial information sources for various remote sensing applications, including the precise orthorectification of high-resolution satellite images, 3D spatial analyses, multi-criteria decision support systems, and deformation monitoring. The accuracy of DEMs has direct impacts on specific calculations and process chains; therefore, it is important to select the most appropriate DEM by considering the aim, accuracy requirement, and scale of each study. In this research, DSMs obtained from a variety of satellite sensors were compared to analyze their accuracy and performance. For this purpose, freely available Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) 30 m, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 30 m, and Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) 30 m resolution DSM data were obtained. Additionally, 3 m and 1 m resolution DSMs were produced from tri-stereo images from the SPOT 6 and Pleiades high-resolution (PHR) 1A satellites, respectively. Elevation reference data provided by the General Command of Mapping, the national mapping agency of Turkey—produced from 30 cm spatial resolution stereo aerial photos, with a 5 m grid spacing and ±3 m or better overall vertical accuracy at the 90% confidence interval (CI)—were used to perform accuracy assessments. Gross errors and water surfaces were removed from the reference DSM. The relative accuracies of the different DSMs were tested using a different number of checkpoints determined by different methods. In the first method, 25 checkpoints were selected from bare lands to evaluate the accuracies of the DSMs on terrain surfaces. In the second method, 1000 randomly selected checkpoints were used to evaluate the methods’ accuracies for the whole study area. In addition to the control point approach, vertical cross-sections were extracted from the DSMs to evaluate the accuracies related to land cover. The PHR and SPOT DSMs had the highest accuracies of all of the testing methods, followed by the ALOS DSM, which had very promising results. Comparatively, the SRTM and ASTER DSMs had the worst accuracies. Additionally, the PHR and SPOT DSMs captured man-made objects and above-terrain structures, which indicated the need for post-processing to attain better representations.
Note de contenu : 1- Introduction Générale

[Termes IGN] représentation discrèteRésumé : (Auteur) A digital elevation model (DEM) is a virtual representation of topography, where the terrain is established by the three-dimensional co-ordinates. In the framework of sparse representation, this paper investigates DEM generation from contours. Since contours are usually sparsely distributed and closely related in space, sparse spatial regularization (SSR) is enforced on them. In order to make up for the lack of spatial information, another lower spatial resolution DEM from the same geographical area is introduced. In this way, the sparse representation implements the spatial constraints in the contours and extracts the complementary information from the auxiliary DEM. Furthermore, the proposed method integrates the advantage of the unbiased estimation of kriging. For brevity, the proposed method is called the kriging and sparse spatial regularization (KSSR) method. The performance of the proposed KSSR method is demonstrated by experiments in Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 30 m DEM and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) 30 m global digital elevation model (GDEM) generation from the corresponding contours and a 90 m DEM. The experiments confirm that the proposed KSSR method outperforms the traditional kriging and SSR methods, and it can be successfully used for DEM generation from contours. [Termes IGN] validation des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are an invaluable source of information in large area studies. Some of the DEMs such as Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission Radiometer-Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM), shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM), and Global Multi-resolution Terrain Elevation Data 2010 (GMTED2010) are, freely available for the scientific community worldwide. Prior to any application, global datasets of DEMs should he evaluated using reference data of higher accuracy. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to assess the quality of the ASTER GDEM (version 2), SRTM (version 4) and systematic subsample GMTED2010 in Tunisia. The validation process, adopted here, is based on two main approaches: internai and external validations. The internai validation is achieved by petforming visual inspection of shaded relief images extracted from the three DEMs. At this level, results show that SRTM is essentially similar to ASTER GDEM2 in term of relief features representation. In the second alternative, the vertical accuracy of each DEM is evaluated using 60 Global Positioning System (GPS) validation points. The overall vertical accuracy shows RMSE error of 11.96 m, 8.65 m and 10.86 m for ASTER GDEM2, SRTM and GMTED2010 DEM respectively, in comparison with GPS elevation points. [Termes IGN] orthoimageRésumé : (auteur) ZiYuan-3 (ZY-3, meaning Resource-3) is China's first civilian multispectral satellite with high-resolution stereo mapping capability. The along-track stereo images of ZY-3 allow the generation of digital elevation models (DEMs) for various mapping applications. This article evaluated the precision of the derived stereo DEM and orthoimages of ZY-3 data for a test site in Northeastern China. Pixel offset and GPS survey data were used to evaluate the image products. Orthoimages were derived by incorporating rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) of the satellite orbits and the reference DEMs, including the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) global digital elevation model (GDEM) and ZY-3 stereo elevation model. The generations of orthoimages were categorised into four approaches depending on the RPCs, control points and/or reference DEMs used. When only the ASTER GDEM was used, the derived orthoimages of the forward and backward viewing sensors showed clear pixel offsets against the GPS check points (CKPs). For example, the offsets of the orthoimage derived using forward-looking image were 13·58 and 26·50 m, in x (easting) and y (northing) directions, respectively. These results also indicated that the pixel offset vectors between the forward and backward orthoimages was systematic which was caused by the error in the RPCs. The second and third approaches were to generate the ZY-3 stereo DEMs first, with and without the use of ground control points (GCPs), and then used the stereo DEMs to generate the orthoimages of the forward and backward looking images. The forth approach used both GCPs and ASTER GDEM to generate the orthoimages. The results showed the use of four GCPs in the process improved the accuracy of the orthoimages. Therefore, ZY-3 can deliver the DEM and orthoimage products to meet the accuracy requirement of the national 1 : 50 000 mapping with four well distributed GCPs.
