[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Spatially-explicit dataset of plant species occurrences collected in the Province of Siena (Central Italy) is analysed, with the aim of investigating a) the relative role of environmental factors in shaping spatial patterns of plant species richness, and b) how the spatial scale at which predictors have been sampled determines the explicative power of species richness models. The optimal spatial resolution of analysis was evaluated with respect to the total deviance explained by models, using a set of environmental and remotely sensed derived predictors calculated at different spatial scales. Results confirm the hypothesis that the predictive power of landscape structure is influenced by the spatial scale at which predictor variables have been sampled. Furthermore, the relevance of identifying a proper geographical scale of investigation, hence minimizing the redundancy in the predictor variables and maximising the explanatory power of the single groups of predictor variables, is highlighted as well. [Termes IGN] signal GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) GNSS Reflectometry, Scatterometry and Radio Occultation aboard ISS is the mission concept under study within the European Space Agency. Its core payload consists of an interferometric GNSS-Reflectometry ocean altimeter/scatterometer which does not need to generate any clean replicas of the GNSS codes for its operation. This paper describes a new interferometric technique by which such payload could also perform radio occultation as an add-on, without requiring any additional hardware resources, like the generation of clean code replicas or a storage of them. Two possibilities are studied. The first one consists of performing the complex autocorrelation function of the received signal transmitted by a rising or setting GNSS satellite. The autocorrelation function is evaluated around time epochs that are multiples of the period of suitable codes found in the modulation of the navigation signals. Satellite discrimination has to be performed spatially, through the antenna pattern. The second possibility consists in acquiring the reference signal separately from the occultation event which, in turn, has two options depending upon the geometry at which the reference is recorded: zenithal and top of the atmosphere. The signal-to-noise ratio, the satellite discrimination, and the impact of clock errors are assessed. [Termes IGN] risque majeurRésumé : (Auteur) A significant challenge during any emergency response scenario is the timely compilation of actionable data from disparate sources. Although numerous strategies exist, crisis mapping techniques have emerged as effective tools for synthesizing and visualizing event specific data when establishing situational awareness. User generated content (UGC) voluntarily submitted through social networking outlets (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, and others) are increasingly being consumed and mined for actionable data (e.g., Goodchild 2007; Elwood, Goodchild, and Sui 2012). Despite its apparent value as a rich and instantaneous source of actionable content, little research has emerged examining the underlying demographic characteristics that are likely to produce effective crowdsourced content during a crisis. Accordingly, this study collected and synthesized user generated data extracted from multiple social networks during the Horsethief Canyon Fire that occurred near Jackson, Wyoming, in September 2012. The spatial distribution of wildfire and non-wildfire specific UGC were compared to confirm the presence of a social networking user base that contributed to situational awareness. Regression analysis was used to identify relevant demographic characteristics that reflect the portion of the impacted community that will voluntarily contribute meaningful data about the fire. The preliminary findings suggest that emergency responders can use these techniques to quickly and efficiently assess the efficacy of mining actionable data from social media in a given community. Recommendations for additional research are discussed and provided. [Termes IGN] ressources en eauRésumé : (Auteur) Given that water resources are scarce and are strained by competing demands, it has become crucial to develop and improve techniques to observe the temporal and spatial variations in the inland water volume. Due to the lack of data and the heterogeneity of water level stations, remote sensing, and especially altimetry from space, appear as complementary techniques for water level monitoring. In addition to spatial resolution and sampling rates in space or time, one of the most relevant criteria for satellite altimetry on inland water is the accuracy of the elevation data. Here, the accuracy of ICESat LIDAR altimetry product is assessed over the Great Lakes in North America. The accuracy assessment method used in this paper emphasizes on autocorrelation in high temporal frequency ICESat measurements. It also considers uncertainties resulting from both in situ lake level reference data. A probabilistic upscaling process was developed. This process is based on several successive ICESat shots averaged in a spatial transect accounting for autocorrelation between successive shots. The method also applies pre-processing of the ICESat data with saturation correction of ICESat waveforms, spatial filtering to avoid measurement disturbance from the land–water transition effects on waveform saturation and data selection to avoid trends in water elevations across space. Initially this paper analyzes 237 collected ICESat transects, consistent with the available hydrometric ground stations for four of the Great Lakes. By adapting a geostatistical framework, a high frequency autocorrelation between successive shot elevation values was observed and then modeled for 45% of the 237 transects. The modeled autocorrelation was therefore used to estimate water elevations at the transect scale and the resulting uncertainty for the 117 transects without trend. This uncertainty was 8 times greater than the usual computed uncertainty, when no temporal correlation is taken into account. This temporal correlation, corresponding to approximately 11 consecutive ICESat shots, could be linked to low transmitted ICESat GLAS energy and to poor weather conditions. Assuming Gaussian uncertainties for both reference data and ICESat data upscaled at the transect scale, we derived GLAS deviations statistics by averaging the results at station and lake scales. An overall bias of -4.6 cm (underestimation) and an overall standard deviation of 11.6 cm were computed for all lakes. Results demonstrated the relevance of taking autocorrelation into account in satellite data uncertainty assessment.
