[Termes descripteurs IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) Self-calibration plays a significant role in the automatic interior/exterior orientation of camera systems. This paper presents a new family of self-calibration additional parameters (aps) for digital airborne camera calibration. Photogrammetric self-calibration can (to a very large extent) be considered as a function approximation problem in mathematics. Based on the rigorous approximation theory, a new family of so-called Legendre self-calibration APs is developed from the orthogonal Legendre Polynomials. An approach is suggested to assess the full potential of in-situ camera calibration. The performance of Legendre aps is investigated in many field tests on the DMC, UltracamX, UltracamXp and DigiCAM camera systems. The external accuracy in the tests can reach 0.2 GSD and 0.4 GSD in horizontal and vertical dimensions, respectively. The posterior standard deviation estimation of image measurements is approx. 0.12 pixel or even less. The advantages of Legendre aps are illustrated over the conventional counterparts. From both the theoretical and practical views, Legendre aps are orthogonal, rigorous, flexible, and effective for calibrating frame-format airborne cameras. [Termes descripteurs IGN] série de FourierRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new family of rigorous and flexible mathematical self-calibration additional parameters (APs) for airborne camera calibration. Photogrammetric self-calibration can – to a very large extent – be considered as a function approximation problem in mathematics. It is shown, that algebraic polynomials are less desirable for designing self-calibration APs due to the highly correlated terms. Based on the mathematical approximation theory, we suggest that Fourier series be the optimal mathematical basis functions for self-calibration purpose. A whole family of so-called Fourier self-calibration APs is developed, whose solid theoretical foundations are the Laplace’s Equation and the Fourier Theorem. Fourier APs are orthogonal, rigorous, flexible, generic and efficient for calibrating the image distortion of frame-format airborne cameras. The high performance of Fourier APs is demonstrated in many practical tests on different camera systems, including the DMC, DMCII, UltracamX, UltracamXp and DigiCAM cameras. We illustrate the theoretical and practical advantages of the Fourier APs over the physical APs and the popular polynomial APs. The joint applications with physical models are promoted for specific applications as well. On account of the theoretical justifications and high practical performance, Fourier APs should be preferred for in situ airborne camera calibration. [Termes descripteurs IGN] photogrammétrie terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) One of the practical impediments to the adoption of long focal length lenses in close range photogrammetry is the difficulty in network exterior orientation and self-calibration that can be encountered with the collinearity equation model when the camera field of view is smaller than around 10°. This paper reports on an investigation that examined two different avenues for improving the self-calibration of long focal length cameras. The first is a re-examination of the linearisation of the collinearity equations with additional calibration parameters, and especially determination of the coefficients in the design matrix corresponding to the interior orientation elements. The second is a new approach to the calculation of object space coordinates by employing an orthogonal projection model that can be formulated as a bundle adjustment with self-calibration. Accuracy aspects of both approaches are discussed and test cases employing both zoom and macro lenses are presented. [Termes descripteurs IGN] télémètre laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, the method of self-calibration widely used in photogrammetry has been found suitable for the estimation of systematic errors in terrestrial laser scanners. Since high correlations can be present between the estimated parameters, ways to reduce them have to be found. This paper presents a unified approach to self-calibration of terrestrial laser scanners, where the parameters in a least-squares adjustment are treated as observations by assigning appropriate weights to them. The higher these weights are the lower the parameter correlations are expected to be. Self-calibration of a pulsed laser scanner Leica Scan Station was performed with the unified approach. The scanner position and orientation were determined during the measurements with the help of a total station, and the point clouds were directly georeferenced. The significant systematic errors were zero error in the laser rangefinder and vertical circle index error. Most parameter correlations were comparatively low. In part, precise knowledge of the horizontal coordinates of the scanner centre helped greatly to achieve low correlation between these parameters and the zero error. The approach was shown to be advantageous to the use of adjustment with stochastic (weighted) inner constraints where the parameter correlations were higher. At the same time, the collimation error could not be estimated reliably due to its high correlation with the scanner azimuth because of a limited vertical distribution of the targets in the calibration field. While this problem can be solved for a scanner with a nearly spherical field-of-view, it will complicate the calibration of scanners with limited vertical field-of-view. Investigations into the influence of precision of the scanner position and levelling on the adjustment results lead to two important findings. First, it is not necessary to level the scanner during the measurements when using the unified approach since the parameter correlations are relatively low anyway. Second, the scanner position has to be known with a precision of about 1 mm in order to get a reliable estimate of the zero error. [Termes descripteurs IGN] résiduRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a new method for integrated range camera system self-calibration in which both traditional camera calibration parameters and rangefinder systematic error parameters are estimated simultaneously in a free-network bundle adjustment of observations to signalised targets. Its mathematical basis is collinearity and range observation equations augmented with correction models for systematic error sources identified in the data. The self-calibration results from datasets captured with two different range cameras, a SwissRanger SR3000 and a SwissRanger SR4000, are presented and analysed in detail. The method’s effectiveness is demonstrated in terms of systematic error removal and independent accuracy assessment. Up to a 54% reduction in the residual RMS was achieved by inclusion of the proposed error models in the self-calibration adjustment. An improvement of at least 74% in the RMS of object point co-ordinate differences, over that achieved without calibration or provided by the manufacturer’s software (in the case of the SR3000), was realised in an independent accuracy assessment. In addition, the effects of several influencing variables, including the range stochastic error model, the network geometry and the range measurements themselves, on key correlation mechanisms are analysed in detail.
