Despite uncertainties related to radiation use efficiency, the amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted by the canopy is a reliable estimator of primary production. Theoretical and empirical data support the relationship between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer sensor on National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration satellites and the fraction of PAR intercepted by green canopies. It is shown, for the period 1981-2000, that there is an overall increase in the radiation intercepted by the canopy over South America by 1.3%, with rainforests making the largest absolute contribution (45%), followed by savannas (23%). Under conditions of minimal agricultural use, disturbance and anthropogenic N deposition, humid temperate forests showed the highest proportional increase in NDVI during the last two decades (4.9%). Deserts showed a net reduction in NDVI relative to the 1981-1985 average (-4.4%). The expansion of agriculture over the last two decades was associated with NDVI reductions over subtropical forests. NDVI trends in South American region highlight a biome-dependent imprint of major global change noticeable in only two decades. From the different contributions made during this symposium it becomes clear that, after a set of new sensors like Envisat, Ikonos, Quickbird, ASTER, MODIS ... became operational, now also the applications have reached the operational stage. The development of adapted methodologies to this new generation of sensors needs a couple of years before entering the application stage.
It is also clear that Very High Resolution data has entered definitively the remote sensing applications "forum", with the emphasis on studies dealing with resolutions adapted to new application areas, urban structures for example, something which was not possible in the past since the resolutions were not appropriate. Many contributions illustrate the use of sensors with a better and finer spectral resolution. Environmental protection, a new field of application was also the theme of several contributions.
It must be started, nevertheless, that for the moment radar images remain the inherent tool for certain applications and Landsat TM and ETM+ for optical remote sensing, remain the "work horses". The recent difficulties with the Landcast sensor, however, may change this part of the "remote sensing landscape". But other sensors with others and sometimes more possibilities are ready to take over. Wo=ith new strategies for Earth observation being formulated, one may conclude that the remote sensing community really is in transition.Note de contenu : - Keynote lectures

[Termes IGN] penteRésumé : (auteur) Recently, SAR data proved to be useful for the retrieval of forest biomass. However, the effects of terrain slope must be addressed towards the generalization of biomass retrieval for varied forest and environmental conditions. To this aim, we developed experimental and theoretical approaches allowing the study of multi-frequency/multi-polarization forest backscatter of a given forest type, as a function of forest parameters and SAR local incidence angle over the relief. The experimental results showed that the sensitivity of SAR data to biomass was similar to that obtained over a flat terrain, only if the backscatter data were calibrated for slope effects. Moreover, the backscatter must also be corrected for its angular decrease, which can be removed using a simple angular model developed under assumptions of theoretical equations. The highest correlation of corrected backscatter with forest parameters related to aboveground biomass (such as stand age and bole volume) was achieved at L-HV 55°.
