[Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) Methods to estimate forest biomass change have been investigated using experimental P-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the recent airborne campaigns BioSAR 2007 and BioSAR 2010 conducted over a hemiboreal test site in southern Sweden. Regression models based on backscatter change were developed using reference biomass change maps derived from high-density laser scanning data. Different regression models were developed for linear, square root, and logarithmic biomass change scales. The models were compared to the change maps based on laser data using twofold cross-validation, and estimation errors were evaluated using six 80 m by 80 m plots with detailed in situ measurements. The results indicate that the root-mean-square error of biomass change estimates based on P-band SAR backscatter data is about 15% or 20 t/ha. This suggests that not only clear-cuts but also growth and thinning can be measured. Simulations were performed in order to evaluate the possibility of using a spaceborne P-band SAR for measurements of forest biomass change. The simulations show that, with 64 equivalent number of looks (ENL) and a 50% change in biomass, it is possible to correctly indicate whether the forest has gained or lost biomass. Similarly, for a biomass loss of more than 75%, a correct indication of the sign of biomass change can be achieved with only 8 ENL. [Termes IGN] régression linéaireRésumé : (auteur) Biomass assessment of the Mau Forest Ecosystem (MFE) was done as part of Kenya’s greenhouse gas inventory. Trans Mara and Mount Londiani forest blocks representing extremes of vegetation types in the MFE were selected for ground data. Based on canopy closure, four forest strata were identified as very dense, moderately dense, open and bamboo. In each stratum, 5 clusters each with 4 plots measuring 30 m × 30 m were located. Big trees (D1.3 ≥ 10 cm) were measured per species for diameter at breast height (D1.3) in the whole plot while height was measured for every 5th tree. Poles (10 cm > D1.3 ≤ 5) were measured for D1.3 in a 10 × 10 m concentric sub plot.

[Termes IGN] modélisation de la forêtRésumé : (Auteur) The estimation of above ground biomass in forests is critical for carbon cycle modeling and climate change mitigation programs. Small footprint lidar provides accurate biomass estimates, but its application in tropical forests has been limited, particularly in Africa. Hyperspectral data record canopy spectral information that is potentially related to forest biomass. To assess lidar ability to retrieve biomass in an African forest and the usefulness of including hyperspectral information, we modeled biomass using small footprint lidar metrics as well as airborne hyperspectral bands and derived vegetation indexes. Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) was adopted to cope with multiple inputs and multicollinearity issues; the Variable of Importance in the Projection was calculated to evaluate importance of individual predictors for biomass. Our findings showed that the integration of hyperspectral bands (R2 = 0.70) improved the model based on lidar alone (R2 = 0.64), this encouraging result call for additional research to clarify the possible role of hyperspectral data in tropical regions. Replacing the hyperspectral bands with vegetation indexes resulted in a smaller improvement (R2 = 0.67). Hyperspectral bands had limited predictive power (R2 = 0.36) when used alone. This analysis proves the efficiency of using PLSR with small-footprint lidar and high resolution hyperspectral data in tropical forests for biomass estimation. Results also suggest that high quality ground truth data is crucial for lidar-based AGB estimates in tropical African forests, especially if airborne lidar is used as an intermediate step of upscaling field-measured AGB to a larger area. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing of vegetation gross primary production (GPP) is an important step to analyze terrestrial carbon (C) cycles in response to changing climate. The availability of global networks of C flux measurements provides a valuable opportunity to develop remote sensing based GPP algorithms and test their performances across diverse regions and plant functional types (PFTs). Using 70 global C flux measurements including 24 non-forest (NF), 17 deciduous forest (DF) and 29 evergreen forest (EF), we present the evaluation of an upscaled remote sensing based greenness and radiation (GR) model for GPP estimation. This model is developed using enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and land surface temperature (LST) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and global course resolution radiation data from the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Model calibration was achieved using statistical parameters of both EVI and LST fitted for different PFTs. Our results indicate that compared to the standard MODIS GPP product, the calibrated GR model improved the GPP accuracy by reducing the root mean square errors (RMSE) by 16%, 30% and 11% for the NF, DF and EF sites, respectively. The standard MODIS and GR model intercomparisons at individual sites for GPP estimation also showed that GR model performs better in terms of model accuracy and stability. This evaluation demonstrates the potential use of the GR model in capturing short-term GPP variations in areas lacking ground measurements for most of vegetated ecosystems globally.
