[Termes IGN] signal GNSSRésumé : (auteur) The estimation of aboveground biomass is commonly recognized for global relevance because of the vegetation role in the carbon cycle. Both active and passive microwave sensors can significantly contribute to this goal because of their high sensitivity to water content and high penetration at lower frequencies (L-/P-bands). In particular, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) are recently receiving increasing interest as source of opportunity to be employed as illuminator for L-band remote sensing, since they could provide low-cost sensors for nondestructive forest biomass estimation over large areas. In this article, we suggest a method to extract forest information using the GNSS direct signals collected in clear sky and below the vegetation canopy at both circular polarizations. An experimental campaign, carried out in the framework of an European Space Agency (ESA) project, was conducted over three poplar forests with different biomass to verify the feasibility of this technique. The relationships between the GNSS measurements and the tree parameters were first assessed and then interpreted and supported by statistical analysis and a theoretical model. The signal collected under the canopy is affected by attenuation and depolarization with respect to the one collected in open air, and this article demonstrated that both direct line-of-sight propagation and volume scattering play a role in the signal magnitude and its fluctuation in time. Although the experimental data set is limited in size and environmental conditions, two inversion algorithms were also tested with the encouraging retrieval results. We noted that date of acquisition is important, but certainly the selection of allometric equation serving as the reference data was paramount. Similarly, choosing a proper form of fully polarimetric data was instrumental, although this requires validation in different environmental settings. As expected, modern data mining approaches consistently delivered high accuracy. Extreme learning machine yielded the best estimate in terms of R2 (0.98) and RMSE (1.88 Mg/ha); nonetheless, it also delivered a slight negative estimation. In this case, we found that a variant of random forest produced an outcome without any negative estimation. This research suggests that estimated biomass or carbon information from rubber plantations would be an invaluable candidate for the improvement of global biomass data. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Key message: The use of reduced planting spacings is an important strategy to increase the carbon storage in the above-belowground biomass and should be recommended for future exploitation of forest energy plantations when the purpose intended is the production of biomass for energy.
Context: Recent concerns about global warming have resulted in more concerted studies on quantifying carbon storage in forest systems. Forest energy plantations play an essential role in the carbon storage.
Aims: We proposed to evaluate the carbon storage and partitioning in short-rotation forest plantations and to characterize the elemental composition and energetic properties of the forest species Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth, and Ateleia glazioviana Baill, grown under four planting spacings in Southern Brazil.
Methods: A field study was conducted in order to evaluate forest carbon stock and wood composition using samples collected by direct method. The four spacings evaluated were 2.0 × 1.0, 2.0 × 1.5, 3.0 × 1.0, and 3.0 × 1.5 m.
Results: The Eucalyptus grandis stored 327.1 Mg C ha−1 at 2.0 × 1.5-m spacing. When compared with the 3.0 × 1.5-m spacing, we observed a reduction of 29% in carbon stored. All forest species showed higher carbon storage in the following partitioning pattern: trunk>roots>branches>leaves>litter. Forest species energetic properties and elemental composition were not affected by planting spacing. On the other hand, variations according the tree portions were observed. For the carbon stocks in the soil, we observed an average accumulated carbon stock for the forest species studied of 77.4 Mg C ha−1 (0–40 cm).
Conclusion: Forest managers can accelerate growth and increase the forest carbon storage and biomass yield by using reduced planting spacing that are smaller than the current pattern used by the majority of the forest producers, which is 3.0 × 1.5 m. For Eucalyptus grandis and Mimosa scabrella, the planting spacings recommended to produce biomass and improve carbon stocks were 2.0 × 1.5 and 2.0 × 1.0 m, respectively.Numéro de notice : A2020-402 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-00974-w Date de publication en ligne : 27/06/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-00974-w Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=95450

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: The change in forest productivity was simulated in six stands in Wallonia (Belgium) following different climate scenarios using a process-based and spatially explicit tree growth model. Simulations revealed a strong and positive impact of the CO 2 fertilization while the negative effect of the transpiration deficit was compensated by longer vegetation periods. The site modulated significantly the forest productivity, mainly through the stand and soil characteristics. Context: Forest net primary production (NPP) reflects forest vitality and is likely to be affected by climate change. Aims: Simulating the impact of changing environmental conditions on NPP and two of its main drivers (transpiration deficit and vegetation period) in six Belgian stands and decomposing the site effect. Methods: Based on the tree growth model HETEROFOR, simulations were performed for each stand between 2011 and 2100 using three climate scenarios and two CO2 modalities (constant vs time dependent). Then, the climate conditions, soils and stands were interchanged to decompose the site effect in these three components.
Results: In a changing climate with constant atmospheric CO2, NPP values remained constant due to a compensation of the negative effect of increased transpiration deficit by a positive impact of longer vegetation periods. With time-dependent atmospheric CO2, NPP substantially increased, especially for the scenarios with higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For both atmospheric CO2 modalities, the site characteristics modulated the temporal trends and accounted in total for 56 to 73% of the variability.
Conclusion: Long-term changes in NPP were primarily driven by CO2 fertilization, reinforced transpiration deficit, longer vegetation periods and the site characteristics.Numéro de notice : A2020-594 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-00966-w Date de publication en ligne : 14/07/2020 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-00966-w Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=95932

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Research Highlights: Litterfall biomass after prescribed burning (PB) is significantly influenced by meteorological variables, stand characteristics, and the fire prescription. Some of the fire-adaptive traits of the species under study (Pinus nigra and Pinus pinaster) mitigate the effects of PB on litterfall biomass. The Bayesian approach, tested here for the first time, was shown to be useful for analyzing the complex combination of variables influencing the effect of PB on litterfall.
Background and Objectives: The aims of the study focused on explaining the influence of meteorological conditions after PB on litterfall biomass, to explore the potential influence of stand characteristic and tree traits that influence fire protection, and to assess the influence of fire prescription and fire behavior.
Materials and Methods: An experimental factorial design including three treatments (control, spring, and autumn burning), each with three replicates, was established at two experimental sites (N = 18; 50 × 50 m2 plots). The methodology of the International Co-operative Program on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP forests) was applied and a Bayesian approach was used to construct a generalized linear mixed model.
Results: Litterfall was mainly affected by the meteorological variables and also by the type of stand and the treatment. The effects of minimum bark thickness and the height of the first live branch were random. The maximum scorch height was not high enough to affect the litterfall. Time during which the temperature exceeded 60 °C (cambium and bark) did not have an important effect. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrated that meteorological conditions were the most significant variables affecting litterfall biomass, with snowy and stormy days having important effects. Significant effects of stand characteristics (mixed and pure stand) and fire prescription regime (spring and autumn PB) were shown. The trees were completely protected by a combination of low-intensity PB and fire-adaptive tree traits, which prevent direct and indirect effects on litterfall. Identification of important variables can help to improve PB and reduce the vulnerability of stands managed by this method.
