[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The current advent of autostereoscopic monitors and TV screens using lenticular foil technology proves the increasing desire to visualize movies, pictures, graphics or even maps in true-3D. These techniques could expand the cartographic ‘tool box’ drastically, implying that 3D is no longer limited to the well-known representation of landform characteristics. Major map design aspects of multi-image models have been analyzed and evaluated regarding their use in thematic cartography. For map design using lenticular foil technology empirical findings are necessary to position layers adequately along the z-axis of a 3D depiction. Hovering layers may generate additional information values, which seem to be able to compensate the shortcomings in 2D maps. Several parameters or dimensions of cartographic contents can be displayed simultaneously. True-3D display techniques must be implemented in a differentiated manner to achieve positive impacts on cartographic communication. However, lenticular foil technique opens perspectives for more diverse products in thematic cartography. [Termes IGN] strate végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents a robust approach for characterization of multi-layered forests using airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. Fuel mapping or biomass estimation requires knowing the diversity and boundaries of the forest patches, as well as their spatial pattern. This includes the thickness of the main vegetation layers, but also the spatial arrangement and size of the individual plants that compose each stratum. In order to decompose the ALS point cloud into genuine 3-D segments corresponding to individual vegetation features, such as shrubs or tree crowns, we apply a statistical approach based on the mean shift algorithm. The segments are progressively assigned to a forest layer: ground vegetation, understory or overstory. Our method relies on a single biophysically meaningful parameter, the kernel bandwidth, which is related to the local forest structure. It is validated on 44 plots of a Portuguese forest, composed mainly of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) and maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) trees. The number of detected trees varies with the dominance position: from 98.6% for the dominant trees to 12.8% for the suppressed trees. Linear regression models explain up to 70% of the variability associated with ground vegetation and understory height. This year, NAVTEQ entered the area of indoor mapping, by providing maps of complex interior spaces such as shopping malls, and in the future public spaces such as transport hubs, conference and sport venues on mobile devices. Frank Pauli, vice president of NAVTEQ's Map and Content Products division within EMEA, explains all about this new mapping product, its use, market potential and integration with other NAVTEQ products. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The progressive projection is by origin a manual cartographic technique, traditionally used by panoramic landscape painters; however, it is rarely encountered in digitally created three-dimensional (3D) maps. In this article, the advantages of this specific projection when designing 3D maps are presented, the processes involved in its manual construction, as well as the existing and potential digital implementation approaches, are reviewed. A new algorithmic solution is described, allowing for user-friendly interactive bending of a terrain model into a progressive view, with options to add a curved horizon, to vertically exaggerate the terrain, and to create a 360° strip panorama. The resulting software, Terrain Bender, is freely available for download.
