[Termes IGN] terre arableRésumé : (Auteur) The necessity of mapping changes in land cover categories based on satellite imageries is a challenging task especially in terms of arable land and grasslands. The phenological phases of arable lands change quickly while grasslands is more stable. It might be hard to capture these changes regarding the spectral overlap between crops in full growth and grass itself. We have introduced a relatively simple processing workflow with good efficiency and accuracy. Our proposed method utilises the combination of a Multivariate Alteration Change Detection Algorithm and an existing boosting method, such as the AdaBoost algorithm with different weak learners and the most recent one – Extreme Gradient Boosting that is actually a relatively new approach in remote sensing. According to the results, the highest overall accuracy is 89.51 %. The proposed process workflow was tested on Landsat data with 30 m spatial resolution, using open-source software: R and GRASS GIS, Orfeo Toolbox library. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (Auteur) The Inner Mongolian steppe is a vast grassland ecosystem that has long been home to nomadic pastoralists. However, this steppe is experiencing grassland degradation as well as more frequent sand storms. The objective of this study was to detect land-cover changes in the Wulagai grassland of Inner Mongolia using multi-temporal Landsat images from 1986 to 2014, and to determine the factors driving these changes and their impacts. Land-cover maps for 1986, 1995, 2000, 2006 and 2014 were produced using the Support Vector Machine method. Subsequently, 300 m × 300 m grid-cell vector map which covered Wulagai grassland was made to detect land-cover changes and correlations between land-cover classes. The results show degradation trend from 1986 to 2014. Grid-cell-based spatial correlation analysis confirmed a strong negative correlation between grassland and barren, indicating that grassland degradation in this region is due to the regional modernization over the past 28 years. Considering future land use scenarios that include depopulation is necessary to evaluate changes in ecosystem services that affect human well‐being and to facilitate comprehensive strategies for balancing rural and urban development. In this study, we applied a population‐projection‐assimilated predictive land use modeling (PPAP‐LM) approach, in which a spatially explicit population projection was incorporated as a predictor in a land use model. To analyze the effects of future population distributions on land use, we developed models for five land use types and generated projections for two scenarios (centralization and decentralization) under a shrinking population in Japan during 2015–2050. Our results suggested that population centralization promotes the compaction of built‐up areas and the expansion of forest and wastelands, while population decentralization contributes to the maintenance of a mixture of forest and cultivated land. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) Understanding the spatial scale sensitivity of cellular automata is crucial for improving the accuracy of land use change simulation. We propose a framework based on a response surface method to comprehensively explore spatial scale sensitivity of the cellular automata Markov chain (CA-Markov) model, and present a hybrid evaluation model for expressing simulation accuracy that merges the strengths of the Kappa coefficient and of Contagion index. Three Landsat-Thematic Mapper remote sensing images of Wuhan in 1987, 1996, and 2005 were used to extract land use information. The results demonstrate that the spatial scale sensitivity of the CA-Markov model resulting from individual components and their combinations are both worthy of attention. The utility of our proposed hybrid evaluation model and response surface method to investigate the sensitivity has proven to be more accurate than the single Kappa coefficient method and more efficient than traditional methods. The findings also show that the CA-Markov model is more sensitive to neighborhood size than to cell size or neighborhood type considering individual component effects. Particularly, the bilateral and trilateral interactions between neighborhood and cell size result in a more remarkable scale effect than that of a single cell size. Given the magnitude of global environmental changes taking place, it is important that Earth Science researchers have access to spatiotemporal reasoning tools. One area of particular interest is land-use change. Using data obtained from images, researchers would like to express abstractions such as ‘land abandonment’, ‘forest regrowth’, and ‘agricultural intensification’. These abstractions are specific types of land-use trajectories, defined as multi-year paths from one land cover into another. Given this need, this paper introduces a spatiotemporal calculus for reasoning about land-use trajectories. Using Allen’s interval logic as a basis, we introduce new predicates that express cases of recurrence, conversion and evolution in land-use change. The proposed predicates are sufficient and necessary to express different kinds of land-use trajectories. Users can build expressions that describe how humans modify Earth’s terrestrial surface. In this way, scientists can better understand the environmental and economic effects of land-use change.
