[Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of landscape metrics in quantifying the urbanization-induced land use and land cover (LULC) changes from a landscape ecology perspective using the City of Indianapolis, Indiana, USA as a case study. Two Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) images, acquired on 3 October 2000 and 13 October 2006, respectively, and two Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper images, acquired on 22 October 1989 and 20 October 2000, respectively, were used for the study. Seven LULC types were identified: urban, agriculture, grasslands, forest, water, barren lands and wetlands. A series of landscape metrics were then computed for each LULC type and these metrics were used to compare the two ASTER-derived LULC maps with the two Landsat-derived maps. Results show that urbanization contributed significantly to LULC changes in the study area. Agricultural lands decreased and forests became more disaggregated. Grassland increased slightly in size and aggregation level and improved in connectedness. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Over the last fifty years, worldwide city shrinkage has become an increasingly common phenomenon. How to deal with the shrinking issue, and any problems caused by its chain effects, still remains a challenge for researchers from various disciplines. In this paper, Japan’s shrinking phenomena is analyzed based on a case study of Katsuura City. Changes in land use, population, industry, and residential preferences are detected through an analysis of census data, land-use maps and questionnaire surveys. On the basis of this analysis, a simulation model consisting of a land-use change model generated by rent-gap theory-based cellular automata combined with a residential migration decision model based on a multinomial logit model is built to project the current pattern of shrinkage in the case study area, and in order to compare various policy scenarios. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) Current research on urban growth is witnessing a division between understanding urban phenomenon as an end product of underlying processes and assumption-based computational modelling. To bridge the gap, there is a need to seek evidence that solidifies any assumptions made about growth dynamics. For this purpose, we attempt to outline invariants in the historical evolution of two urban structures; Manhattan and Barcelona. By modelling changes on the street elements and the clusters they form, we mark invariants that expose self-organisational patterns similar to those in reaction-diffusion dynamics. While it is difficult to verify the role of these invariants in the organised behaviour of urban complexity, their very presence marks one of the defining characteristics for urban pattern recognition.
