[Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (Auteur) Accuracy assessment of burned area maps has been traditionally performed using pixel-based metrics, with the objective of assessing the accuracy and precision of burned area estimates at local and regional scales. While these assessments are helpful for obtaining consistent estimates of the burned area across many fires and over large areas, pixel-based approaches do not necessarily characterize how well individual fires are mapped. At the individual fire scale, other factors like the shape of the fire have significance regarding ecology, fire succession, and landscape management and determining other fire properties such as the spread rate. We propose a method for evaluating wildfire classification maps, which retains the spatially explicit properties of the burn scar. Our method quantifies the edge error (EE) of burned area classifications and reference maps by calculating the average geometric normal of the evaluated burned area boundary along the burn edge and the two nearest neighbor samples from the reference burn boundary. The metric is a physically meaningful quantification of the EE, which represents the average distance between the boundaries of the reference and evaluated burn scars. The methods are demonstrated by comparing MODIS Burned Area (MCD64A1) maps to Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) maps for 173 total wildfires in the United States. The results indicate that when accounting for the minimum achievable EE (MAEE) due to differing spatial resolutions, the mean EE is less than two MODIS pixels and the magnitude of the errors does not appear to be related to fire size. [Termes IGN] production participativeRésumé : (auteur) Crowd-sourced geospatial data can often be enriched by importing open governmental datasets as long as they are up-to date and of good quality. Unfortunately, merging datasets is not straight forward. In the context of geospatial data, spatial overlaps pose a particular problem, as existing data may be overwritten when a naïve, automated import strategy is employed. For example: OpenStreetMap has imported over 100 open geospatial datasets, but the requirement for human assessment makes this a time-consuming process which requires experienced volunteers or training. In this paper, we propose a hybrid import workflow that combines algorithmic filtering with human assessment using the micro-tasking method. This enables human assessment without the need for complex tools or prior experience. Using an online experiment, we investigated how import speed and accuracy is affected by volunteer experience and partitioning of the micro-task. We conclude that micro-tasking is a viable method for massive quality assessment that does not require volunteers to have prior experience working with geospatial data. [Termes IGN] modélisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) For assistance with grazing cattle management, we propose a cattle detection and counting system based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) using aerial images taken by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). To improve detection performance, we take advantage of the fact that, with UAV images, the approximate size of the objects can be predicted when the UAV’s height from the ground can be assumed to be roughly constant. We resize an image to be fed into the CNN to an optimum resolution determined by the object size and the down-sampling rate of the network, both in training and testing. To avoid repetition of counting in images that have large overlaps to adjacent ones and to obtain the accurate number of cattle in an entire area, we utilize a three-dimensional model reconstructed by the UAV images for merging the detection results of the same target. Experiments show that detection performance is greatly improved when using the optimum input resolution with an F-measure of 0.952, and counting results are close to the ground truths when the movement of cattle is approximately stationary compared to that of the UAV’s. Design principles derived from manual cartography and automated graph drawing to increase readability of flow maps and graph layouts are taken into account. The origin-destination flow maps produced with our algorithm show flows with quadratic Bézier curves that reduce flow-on-flow and flow-on-node overlaps, and avoid sharp or irregular bends in flow lines. A survey of expert cartographers found that flow maps created with our automated method are similar in quality to manually produced flow maps. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (auteur) A reliable and accurate facade database would be a major asset in applications such as localization of autonomous vehicles, registration and fine building modeling. Mobile mapping devices now provide the data required to create such a database, but efficient methods should be designed in order to tackle the enormous amount of data collected by such means (a million point per second for hours of acquisition). Another important limitation is the presence of numerous objects in urban scenes of many different types. This paper proposes a method that overcomes these two issues:
• The facade detection algorithm is streamed : the data is processed in the order it was acquired. More precisely, the input data is split into overlapping blocks which are analysed in turn to extract facade parts. Close overlapping parts are then merged in order
• The geometry of the neighborhood of each point is analysed to define a probability that the point belongs to a vertical planar patch. This probability is then injected in a RANdom SAmple Consensus (RANSAC) algorithm both in the sampling step and in the hypothesis validation, in order to favour the most reliable candidates. This ensures much more robustness against outliers during the facade detection.
This way, the main vertical rectangles are detected without any prior knowledge about the data. The only assumptions are that the facades are roughly planar and vertical. The method has been successfully tested on a large dataset in Paris. The facades are detected despite the presence of trees occluding large areas of some facades.
