[Termes IGN] Pinus sylvestrisRésumé : (auteur) Several techniques were used to investigate the threshold minimum temperature inducing severe frost damage during winter in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles and stems from southern provenances in the Iberian Peninsula. Chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, electrolyte leakage (EL), visual scoring (VS), and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were compared. Chl fluorescence, and in particular the maximum potential photosystem II (PSII) efficiency – estimated through the dark-acclimated Fv/Fm ratio -, was found to be a simple, non-destructive indicator of freezing tolerance in needles, as expected. Moreover, the existence of a Chl-containing tissue, the cortical bark chlorenchyma, allowed us the use of Chl fluorescence as a new non-destructive indicator of frost damage in live tissues of Pinus sylvestris L. stems.F reezing tolerance values of southern provenances are compared with those found by other authors in the northern distribution limit of the species. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports a new approach for quantifying vegetation pigment concentrations through wavelet decomposition of hyperspectral remotely sensed data. Wavelets are a group of functions that vary in complexity and mathematical properties, that are used to dissect data into different frequency components and then characterize each component with a resolution appropriate to its scale. Wavelet analysis of a reflectance spectrum is performed by scaling and shifting the wavelet function to produce wavelet coefficients that are assigned to different frequency components. By selecting appropriate wavelet coefficients, a spectral model can be established between the coefficients and biochemical concentrations. Hence, wavelet analysis has the potential to capture much more of the information contained within high-resolution spectra than previous approaches and offers the prospect of developing robust, generic methods for pigment determinations. The capabilities of the wavelet-based technique were examined using reflectance spectra and pigment data collected for a range of plant species at leaf and canopy scales. For the combined data set and all of the individual vegetation types, methods based on wavelet decomposition appreciably outperformed narrowband spectral indices and stepwise selection of narrowband reflectance. However, there was variation between vegetation types in the relative performance of the three different feature extraction techniques employed for selecting the wavelet coefficients for use in predictive models. There was also considerable variability in the performance of predictive models according to the wavelet function used for spectral decomposition and the optimum wavelet functions differed between vegetation types and between individual pigments within the same vegetation type. The research indicates that wavelet analysis holds promise for the accurate determination of chlorophyll a and b and the carotenoids, but further work is needed to refine the approach. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) National and regional obligations to control and maintain water quality have led to an increase in coastal and estuarine monitoring. A potentially valuable tool is high temporal and spatial resolution satellite ocean colour data. NASA's MODIS-Terra and -Aqua can capture data at both 250 m and 500 m spatial resolutions and the existence of two sensors provides the possibility for multiple daily passes over a scene. However, no robust atmospheric correction method currently exists for these data, rendering them unusable for quantitative monitoring applications. Therefore, this paper presents an automatic and dynamic atmospheric correction approach allowing the determination of ocean colour. The algorithm is based around the standard MODIS 1 km atmospheric correction, includes cloud masking and is applicable to all of the visible 500 m bands. Comparison of the 500 m ocean colour data with the standard 1 km data shows good agreement and these results are further supported by in situ data comparisons. In addition, a novel method to produce 500 m chlorophyll-a estimates is presented. Comparisons of the 500 m estimates with the standard MODIS OC3M algorithm and to in situ data from a near-coast validation site are given. [Termes IGN] planctonRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the spectral decomposition algorithm (SDA), a new algorithm for estimating chlorophyll-a concentration in case II waters using multi-spectral satellite data, which is based on a simulation in a controlled laboratory experiment. The SDA is composed of two key steps. The first of these is to consider the mixed reflectance spectrum of a given pixel as a linear combination of three basic components: clear water, non phytoplankton suspended sediments (NPSS), and phytoplankton. The second step is to use a decomposition coefficient (Cp) obtained from the first step as an independent variable in the chlorophyll-a estimation model, instead of the single band reflectance, band ratio or arithmetic calculation of bands used in conventional methods. The simulated results for the Landsat TM data showed that bands 1, 3 and 4 are useful wavelengths for estimating chlorophyll-a concentrations. In the case of a water body with chlorophyll-a concentrations ranging from 0 to 105 ug1-1 and NPSS concentrations ranging from 0 to l00m g1-1, the RMSE of the estimation model of chlorophyll-a concentrations based on the SDA was 13.7 ug1-1, reduced by nearly half of that for conventional methods (the RMSE was 25.6 ug1-for the band ratio, and 25.5 ug1-for the arithmetic calculation of bands). The results of a two-factor ANOVA (without replication) highlight that the decomposition coefficient Cp contains information from phytoplankton far more than from NPSS. However, Cp values were still changed with the addition of NPSS, due mainly to the influence of the interaction of optical properties among phytoplankton, NPSS and water, which occurred in both horizontal and vertical directions in the water bodies. Considering the basic components as a nonlinear combination in a water area may reduce the effect of NPSS on Cp values from that of their linear combination. In addition, the influence of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM), which is generally considered as one of the optically active substances in case II waters, was ignored according to the practical conditions of our study area, Lake Kasumigaura, Japan in this paper. Users can set the basic components (or endmembers) freely according to the conditions of their own study area when the SDA is used (e.g. considering the CDOM as a basic component in the SDA).
