[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Remote Sensing technologies allow to map biophysical, biochemical, and earth surface parameters of the land surface. Of especial interest for various applications in environmental and urban sciences is the combination of spectral and 3D elevation information. However, those two data streams are provided separately by different instruments, namely airborne laser scanner (ALS) for elevation and a hyperspectral imager (HSI) for high spectral resolution data. The fusion of ALS and HSI data can thus lead to a single data entity consistently featuring rich structural and spectral information. In this study, we present the application of fusing the first pulse return information from ALS data at a sub-decimeter spatial resolution with the lower-spatial resolution hyperspectral information available from the HSI into a hyperspectral point cloud (HSPC). During the processing, a plausible hyperspectral spectrum is assigned to every first-return ALS point. We show that the complementary implementation of spectral and 3D information at the point-cloud scale improves object-based classification and information extraction schemes. This improvements have great potential for numerous land-cover mapping and environmental applications. [Termes IGN] réseau neuronal convolutifRésumé : (auteur) Detection of objects from satellite optical remote sensing images is very important for many commercial and governmental applications. With the development of deep convolutional neural networks (deep CNNs), the field of object detection has seen tremendous advances. Currently, objects in satellite remote sensing images can be detected using deep CNNs. In general, optical remote sensing images contain many dense and small objects, and the use of the original Faster Regional CNN framework does not yield a suitably high precision. Therefore, after careful analysis we adopt dense convoluted networks, a multi-scale representation and various combinations of improvement schemes to enhance the structure of the base VGG16-Net for improving the precision. We propose an approach to reduce the test-time (detection time) and memory requirements. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we perform experiments using satellite remote sensing image datasets of aircraft and automobiles. The results show that the improved network structure can detect objects in satellite optical remote sensing images more accurately and efficiently. [Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping forest structure variables provides important information for the estimation of forest biomass, carbon stocks, pasture suitability or for wildfire risk prevention and control. The optimization of the prediction models of these variables requires an adequate stratification of the forest landscape in order to create specific models for each structural type or strata. This paper aims to propose and validate the use of an object-oriented classification methodology based on low-density LiDAR data (0.5 m−2) available at national level, WorldView-2 and Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery to categorize Mediterranean forests in generic structural types. After preprocessing the data sets, the area was segmented using a multiresolution algorithm, features describing 3D vertical structure were extracted from LiDAR data and spectral and texture features from satellite images. Objects were classified after feature selection in the following structural classes: grasslands, shrubs, forest (without shrubs), mixed forest (trees and shrubs) and dense young forest. Four classification algorithms (C4.5 decision trees, random forest, k-nearest neighbour and support vector machine) were evaluated using cross-validation techniques. The results show that the integration of low-density LiDAR and multispectral imagery provide a set of complementary features that improve the results (90.75% overall accuracy), and the object-oriented classification techniques are efficient for stratification of Mediterranean forest areas in structural- and fuel-related categories. Further work will be focused on the creation and validation of a different prediction model adapted to the various strata. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Superresolution mapping (SRM) is a widely used technique to address the mixed pixel problem in pixel-based classification. Advanced object-based classification will face a similar mixed phenomenon-a mixed object that contains different land-cover classes. Currently, most SRM approaches focus on estimating the spatial location of classes within mixed pixels in pixel-based classification. Little if any consideration has been given to predicting where classes spatially distribute within mixed objects. This paper, therefore, proposes a new object-based SRM strategy (OSRM) to deal with mixed objects in object-based classification. First, it uses the deconvolution technique to estimate the semivariograms at target subpixel scale from the class proportions of irregular objects. Then, an area-to-point kriging method is applied to predict the soft class values of subpixels within each object according to the estimated semivariograms and the class proportions of objects. Finally, a linear optimization model at object level is built to determine the optimal class labels of subpixels within each object. Two synthetic images and a real remote sensing image were used to evaluate the performance of OSRM. The experimental results demonstrated that OSRM generated more land-cover details within mixed objects than did the traditional object-based hard classification and performed better than an existing pixel-based SRM method. Hence, OSRM provides a valuable solution to mixed objects in object-based classification.
