[Termes IGN] reconstruction d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Morphological operators (MOs) and their enhancements such as morphological profiles (MPs) are subject to a lively scientific contemplation since they are found to be beneficial for, for example, classification of very high spatial resolution panchromatic, multi-, and hyperspectral imagery. They account for spatial structures with differing magnitudes and, thus, provide a comprehensive multilevel description of an image. In this paper, we introduce the concept of object-based MPs (OMPs) to also encode shape-related, topological, and hierarchical properties of image objects in an exhaustive way. Thereby, we seek to benefit from the so-called object-based image analysis framework by partitioning the original image into objects with a segmentation algorithm on multiple scales. The obtained spatial entities (i.e., objects) are used to aggregate multiple sequences obtained with MOs according to statistical measures of central tendency. This strategy is followed to simultaneously preserve and characterize shape properties of objects and enable both the topological and hierarchical decompositions of an image with respect to the progressive application of MOs. Subsequently, supervised classification models are learned by considering this additionally encoded information. Experimental results are obtained with a random forest classifier with heuristically tuned hyperparameters and a wrapper-based feature selection scheme. We evaluated the results for two test sites of panchromatic WorldView-II imagery, which was acquired over an urban environment. In this setting, the proposed OMPs allow for significant improvements with respect to classification accuracy compared to standard MPs (i.e., obtained by paired sequences of erosion, dilation, opening, closing, opening by top-hat, and closing by top-hat operations). [Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (Auteur) The effective extraction of shape features is an important requirement for the accurate and efficient classification of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) point clouds. However, the challenge of how to obtain robust and discriminative features from noisy and varying density TLS point clouds remains. This paper introduces a novel multiscale and hierarchical framework, which describes the classification of TLS point clouds of cluttered urban scenes. In this framework, we propose multiscale and hierarchical point clusters (MHPCs). In MHPCs, point clouds are first resampled into different scales. Then, the resampled data set of each scale is aggregated into several hierarchical point clusters, where the point cloud of all scales in each level is termed a point-cluster set. This representation not only accounts for the multiscale properties of point clouds but also well captures their hierarchical structures. Based on the MHPCs, novel features of point clusters are constructed by employing the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA). An LDA model is trained according to a training set. The LDA model then extracts a set of latent topics, i.e., a feature of topics, for a point cluster. Finally, to apply the introduced features for point-cluster classification, we train an AdaBoost classifier in each point-cluster set and obtain the corresponding classifiers to separate the TLS point clouds with varying point density and data missing into semantic regions. Compared with other methods, our features achieve the best classification results for buildings, trees, people, and cars from TLS point clouds, particularly for small and moving objects, such as people and cars. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) With the increased spatial resolution of current sensor constellations, more details are captured about our changing planet, enabling the recognition of a greater range of land use/land cover classes. While pixeland object-based classification approaches are widely used for extracting information from imagery, recent studies have shown the importance of spatial contexts for discriminating more specific and challenging classes. This paper proposes a new compact representation for the fast query/classification of compound structures from very high resolution optical remote sensing imagery. This bag-of-features representation relies on the multiscale segmentation of the input image and the quantization of image structures pooled into visual word distributions for the characterization of compound structures. A compressed form of the visual word distributions is described, allowing adaptive and fast queries/classification of image patterns. The proposed representation and the query methodology are evaluated for the classification of the UC Merced 21-class data set, for the detection of informal settlements and for the discrimination of challenging agricultural classes. The results show that the proposed representation competes with state-of-the-art techniques. In addition, the complexity analysis demonstrates that the representation requires about 5% of the image storage space while allowing us to perform queries at a speed down to 1 s/ 1000 km2/CPU for 2-m multispectral data. [Termes IGN] taille du jeu de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has been used increasingly for natural resource applications in recent years due to their greater availability and the miniaturization of sensors. In addition, Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) has received more attention as a novel paradigm for remote sensing earth observation data. However, GEOBIA generates some new problems compared with pixel-based methods. In this study, we developed a strategy for the semi-automatic optimization of object-based classification, which involves an area-based accuracy assessment that analyzes the relationship between scale and the training set size. We found that the Overall Accuracy (OA) increased as the training set ratio (proportion of the segmented objects used for training) increased when the Segmentation Scale Parameter (SSP) was fixed. The OA increased more slowly as the training set ratio became larger and a similar rule was obtained according to the pixel-based image analysis. The OA decreased as the SSP increased when the training set ratio was fixed. Consequently, the SSP should not be too large during classification using a small training set ratio. By contrast, a large training set ratio is required if classification is performed using a high SSP. In addition, we suggest that the optimal SSP for each class has a high positive correlation with the mean area obtained by manual interpretation, which can be summarized by a linear correlation equation. We expect that these results will be applicable to UAV imagery classification to determine the optimal SSP for each class. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (auteur) For image fusion in remote sensing applications the georeferencing accuracy using position, attitude, and camera calibration measurements can be insufficient. Thus, image processing techniques should be employed for precise coregistration of images. In this article a method for multimodal object-based image coregistration refinement between hyperspectral images (HSI) and digital surface models (DSM) is presented. The method is divided in three parts: object outline detection in HSI and DSM, matching, and determination of transformation parameters. The novelty of our proposed coregistration refinement method is the use of material properties and height information of urban objects from HSI and DSM, respectively. We refer to urban objects as objects which are typical in urban environments and focus on buildings by describing them with 2D outlines. Furthermore, the geometric accuracy of these detected building outlines is taken into account in the matching step and for the determination of transformation parameters. Hence, a stochastic model is introduced to compute optimal transformation parameters. The feasibility of the method is shown by testing it on two aerial HSI of different spatial and spectral resolution, and two DSM of different spatial resolution. The evaluation is carried out by comparing the accuracies of the transformations parameters to the reference parameters, determined by considering object outlines at much higher resolution, and also by computing the correctness and the quality rate of the extracted outlines before and after coregistration refinement. Results indicate that using outlines of objects instead of only line segments is advantageous for coregistration of HSI and DSM. The extraction of building outlines in comparison to the line cue extraction provides a larger amount of assigned lines between the images and is more robust to outliers, i.e. false matches.
