[Termes IGN] scène urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Random forests ensemble classifier showed to be suitable for classifying multisource data such as lidar and RGB image for urban scene mapping. However, two major problems remain: (1) the class boundaries are not well classified, a common issue in classification (2) the data are highly imbalanced raising another issue more specific to urban scenes. In this paper, we propose a new ensemble method based on the margin paradigm to improve the classification accuracy of minor classes. Random forests classifier is used in a two-pass methodology with an improved capability for classifying imbalanced data. [Termes IGN] signal lidarRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne lidar systems have become an alternative source for the acquisition of altimeter data. In addition to multi-echo laser scanner systems, full-waveform systems are able to record the whole backscattered signal for each emitted laser pulse. These data provide more information about the structure and the physical properties of the surface. This paper is focused on the classification of full-waveform lidar and airborne image data on urban scenes. Random forests are used since they provide an accurate classification and run efficiently on large datasets. Moreover, they provide measures of variable importance for each class. This is crucial to analyze the relevance of each feature for the classification of urban scenes. Random Forests provide more accurate results than Support Vector Machines with an overall accuracy of 95.75%. The most relevant features show the contribution of lidar waveforms for classifying dense urban scenes and improve the classification accuracy for all classes. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) We analysed the sensitivity of a decision tree derived forest type mapping to simulated data errors in input digital elevation model (DEM), geology and remotely sensed (Landsat Thematic Mapper) variables. We used a stochastic Monte Carlo simulation model coupled with a one-at-a-time approach. The DEM error was assumed to be spatially autocorrelated with its magnitude being a percentage of the elevation value. The error of categorical geology data was assumed to be positional and limited to boundary areas. The Landsat data error was assumed to be spatially random following a Gaussian distribution. Each layer was perturbed using its error model with increasing levels of error, and the effect on the forest type mapping was assessed. The results of the three sensitivity analyses were markedly different, with the classification being most sensitive to the DEM error, than to the Landsat data errors, but with only a limited sensitivity to the geology data error used. A linear increase in error resulted in non-linear increases in effect for the DEM and Landsat errors, while it was linear for geology. As an example, a DEM error of as small as +2% reduced the overall test accuracy by more than 2%. More importantly, the same uncertainty level has caused nearly 10% of the study area to change its initial class assignment at each perturbation, on average. A spatial assessment of the sensitivities indicates that most of the pixel changes occurred within those forest classes expected to be more sensitive to data error. In addition to characterising the effect of errors on forest type mapping using decision trees, this study has demonstrated the generality of employing Monte Carlo analysis for the sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of categorical outputs that have distinctive characteristics from that of numerical outputs. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) The Prairie Pothole Region in the United States contains millions of seasonal, semi-permanent, or permanent lakes and wetlands that typically range in size from 0.1 to 10 ha. These lakes and wetlands are vulnerable to climate change, especially in our study area in South Dakota, in which a period of deluge following a sharp drought considerably expanded the areal extent of prairie pothole lakes during the last decade of the twentieth century. Preliminary estimates of lake areas, determined using LANDSAT 5 and 7 images, had appreciable errors especially for the smallest of these lakes. This article describes a new sub-pixel approach integrated with a CART (Classification and Regression Tree) model using a GIS (Geographical Information System) to quantify mixed water pixels along lake boundaries to improve area estimations for pothole lakes. Errors in estimated area were typically 10% or less for lakes greater than 1 ha in size. An analysis of lakes in our study area demonstrates how lake area changed with the transition from drought to deluge. Small lakes exhibited a distinct seasonal variation in contrast to large lakes that tended to follow precipitation trends more broadly. The total water area of lakes is consistent with broad variation in rainfall.
