[Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (Auteur) Accuracy assessment of burned area maps has been traditionally performed using pixel-based metrics, with the objective of assessing the accuracy and precision of burned area estimates at local and regional scales. While these assessments are helpful for obtaining consistent estimates of the burned area across many fires and over large areas, pixel-based approaches do not necessarily characterize how well individual fires are mapped. At the individual fire scale, other factors like the shape of the fire have significance regarding ecology, fire succession, and landscape management and determining other fire properties such as the spread rate. We propose a method for evaluating wildfire classification maps, which retains the spatially explicit properties of the burn scar. Our method quantifies the edge error (EE) of burned area classifications and reference maps by calculating the average geometric normal of the evaluated burned area boundary along the burn edge and the two nearest neighbor samples from the reference burn boundary. The metric is a physically meaningful quantification of the EE, which represents the average distance between the boundaries of the reference and evaluated burn scars. The methods are demonstrated by comparing MODIS Burned Area (MCD64A1) maps to Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) maps for 173 total wildfires in the United States. The results indicate that when accounting for the minimum achievable EE (MAEE) due to differing spatial resolutions, the mean EE is less than two MODIS pixels and the magnitude of the errors does not appear to be related to fire size. [Termes IGN] télédétectionRésumé : (auteur) Spectral decomposition of mixed pixels can provide information about the abundance of end members but fails to indicate the spatial distribution of end members in vegetation remote sensing. This work is a significant attempt to use the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) characteristics of mixed pixels in the prediction of spatial-heterogeneity metrics. Data sets from this function with different spatial distributions were constructed by the discrete anisotropic radiative transfer model, and three spatial aggregation and dispersion metrics were calculated: percentage of like adjacencies, spatial division index, and aggregation index. A simple linear regression method was used to construct the prediction model of spatial aggregation and dispersion metrics. The potential of multiangle remote sensing model for identifying spatial patterns well was demonstrated, and its importance was found to differ for different spatial aggregation and dispersion metrics. Specifically, the precision of the model based on multiangle reflectance used for predicting the spatial division index could meet a minimum root mean square of 5.95%. The reflectance features from backward observation on the principal plane play the leading role in recognizing the spatial heterogeneity of mixed pixels. The prediction model is sufficiently robust to distinguish the same vegetation with different growth trends, but also performs well when the ground objects have a smaller reflectance difference in the mixed pixels in a certain band. This study is expected to offer a new thought for spatial-heterogeneity identification of ground objects and thus promote the development of remote sensing technology in assessing spatial distribution. [Termes IGN] surveillance du littoralRésumé : (éditeur) Coastal areas are remarkable regions with high spatiotemporal variability. A large population is affected by their physical and biological processes—resulting from effects on tourism to biodiversity and productivity. Coastal ecosystems perform several critical ecosystem services and functions, such as water oxygenation and nutrients provision, seafloor and beach stabilization (as sediment is controlled and trapped within the rhizomes of the seagrass meadows), carbon burial, as areas for nursery, and as refuge for several commercial and endemic species. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of marine habitats is prerequisite information for the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. Remote sensing from UAVs to spaceborne sensors is offering a unique opportunity to measure, analyze, quantify, map, and explore the processes on the coastal areas at high temporal frequencies. This Special Issue on “Application of Remote Sensing in Coastal Areas” is specifically addresses those successful applications—from local to regional scale—in coastal environments related to ecosystem productivity, biodiversity, sea level rise. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The use of deep learning techniques for map generalisation raises new problems regarding the evaluation of the results: (1) images are used as input/output instead of vector data; (2) the deep learning processes do not guarantee results that follow cartographic principles; (3) the deep learning models are black boxes that hide the causal mechanisms. Also, deep learning intern evaluation is mostly based on the realism of the images and the pixel classification accuracy, and none of these criteria is sufficient to evaluate a generalisation process. In this article, we propose an adaptation of the constraint-based evaluation to the images generated by deep learning. Six raster-based constraints are proposed for a mountain road generalisation use case. [Termes IGN] vectorisationIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) With the help of significant technological developments over the years, it has been possible to collect massive amounts of remote sensing data. For example, the constellations of various satellites are able to capture large amounts of remote sensing images with high spatial resolution as well as rich spectral information over the globe. The availability of such huge volume of data has opened the door to numerous applications and raised many challenges. Among these challenges, automatically generating accurate maps has become one of the most interesting and long-standing problems, since it is a crucial process for a wide range of applications in domains such as urban monitoring and management, precise agriculture, autonomous driving, and navigation. This thesis seeks for developing novel approaches to generate vector maps from remote sensing images. To this end, we split the task into two sub-stages. The former stage consists in generating raster maps from remote sensing images by performing pixel-wise classification using advanced deep learning techniques. The latter stage aims at converting raster maps to vector ones by leveraging computational geometry approaches. This thesis addresses the challenges that are commonly encountered within both stages. Although previous research has shown that convolutional neural networks (CNNs)are able to generate excellent maps when training data are representative for test data, their performance significantly drops when there exists a large distribution difference between training and test images. In the first stage of our pipeline, we mainly aim atvercoming limited generalization abilities of CNNs to perform large-scale classification. We also explore a way of leveraging multiple data sets collected at different times with annotations for separate classes to train CNNs that can generate maps for all the classes. In the second part, we propose a method that vectorizes raster maps to integrate them into geographic information systems applications, which completes our processing pipeline. Throughout this thesis, we experiment on a large number of very high resolution satellite and aerial images. Our experiments demonstrate robustness and scalability of the proposed methods.
