[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) For many years high resolution imagery like Ikonos and QuickBird has been available to the public. In contrast to our common sense the increase in spatial resolution does not automatically lead to improved classification accuracy, in particular in urban areas. The automatic classification of land cover classes often requires an object-based approach where classification is based on homogeneous objects, rather than pixels. Because traditional image analysis software is not adapted to this new methodology, the user is forced to invest in expensive new software or to develop new algorithms. This paper presents an alternative classification method, parcel-based, in order to overcome these obstacles. In a first phase an ordinary per-pixel classification is performed and results are summarized and assigned to land parcels. In next phase the land parcels are classified into final land use classes by means of a discriminant analysis of the parcels. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses two grand challenges in the development of methods for Geographic Information Science (GIS). First, this paper presents techniques to compute a cross-tabulation matrix for soft-classified pixels. Second, it shows how to compute the cross-tabulation matrix at multiple scales. The traditional approach to construct the cross-tabulation matrix uses a Boolean operator to analyse pixels that are hard-classified. For soft-classified pixels, the contemporary approach uses a Multiplication operator ; the fuzzy approach uses a Minimum operator ; whereas this paper proposes a multiple-resolution approach that uses a Composite operator. There are difficulties with the traditional, contemporary, and fuzzy methods of computing the cross-tabulation matrix. The proposed multiple-resolution method resolves those difficulties. Furthermore, the proposed method facilitates multiple-resolution analysis, so it can examine how results change as a function of scale. The paper derives the equations to compute cross-tabulation matrices at multiple resolutions and connects those equations to ontological foundations of GIS. [Termes IGN] site Natura 2000Résumé : (auteur) State-of-the-art Earth observation systems that provide very high spatial resolution imagery have given ecologists a powerful tool to directly identify species, habitats and other ecological units. At the same time, there is an urgent need for harmonised tools and methods to evaluate status and trends in European habitats. Towards that goal, the current work explores the applicability and transferability of an advanced pixel window classifier applied on very high spatial resolution satellite imagery for fine scale habitat mapping. The algorithm is tested on images of varying spatial resolutions acquired over test sites designated for the NATURA 2000 list located in different biogeographical zones. Algorithm application to Quickbird and IKONOS images gives encouraging results, regarding both the overall accuracies and the level of class hierarchy (habitats) identified. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose to prove the importance of the application of blind sources separation methods on remote sensing data. Indeed, satellite images are represented by radiometric values where each one is considered as a mixture of different sources. The primary goal of our research is to hand back the different sources covering the scanned zone. The main constraint to restore these sources is to take our observation images as a mixture of physically independent components. In our work, the independence between the different sources is obtained through two statistical methods. The first method is based on the reduction of the spatial source correlations, and the second one is based on the joint maximization of the fourth-order cumulants. On the opposite of the original multispectral images that are represented according to correlated axes, the source images extracted from the proposed algorithms are represented according to mutually independent axes that allow each source to represent specifically a certain type of land cover. This increases the reliability of the analysis and the interpretation of the scanned zone. The source images obtained from the application of the sources separation method give a more effective representation of the information contained on the observation images. The performance of these source images is investigated through an application for the decomposition of mixed pixels. The originality of our application comes from the determination of the mixing matrix modeling the spectral endmembers based on source filters. These filters model the sensibility of each source channel according to the different spectral bands, which give an interesting information about the spectral theme represented by the corresponding source image. This application shows that the proportions of the different land cover types existing into the pixel are better estimated through the source images than through the original multispectral images. This method could offer an interesting solution to mixed-pixel classification.
