[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) The summer drought of 2018 was one of the most climatically severe events in Europe that led to record-breaking temperatures and wildfires in many parts of Europe. The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of the 2018 drought on the phenotypic and genetic response of Norway spruce height growth using the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). To achieve this, the total cumulative height growth of about 6000 clones from 2016 to 2019 in four full-sib trials in Sweden, aged 6–7 years, and from 2017 to 2019 in two half-sib trials in Finland, aged 8–9 years, were measured. The results indicate that the 2018 drought caused reductions in the increment of trees. Although heritability estimates were similar to other reports for Norway spruce, the additive genetic variance was highly inflated in one of the visibly drought-damaged trials in Southern Sweden. Similarly, the genotype by environment (G × E) interaction was highly significant in the drought-damaged Southern Swedish trials. Both additive genetic and phenotypic correlations obtained between height increments in 2019 and final heights were the weakest in all studied trials, implying that the drought legacies might have influenced the recovery of trees in 2019. We may conclude that the severe drought can be an underlying factor for a strong G × E interaction and changes in the ranking of genotypes. Therefore, a selection of drought-resistant genotypes with a good growth capacity tested in variables sites should be considered as an important criterion for future breeding of Norway spruce. Kowalski) Baral, Queloz, and Hosoya cause extensive damage on European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.). Heritable variation in susceptibility to ash dieback has been observed among ash trees in natural and planted populations, but it is not clear how variation in susceptibility influences reproductive fitness.
Aims : We hypothesize that healthier male and female trees contribute more gametes to the following generation compared to unhealthy ones.
Methods : We tested the hypothesis by studying gender, seed production, and paternal success in a clonal field trial with 39 replicated clones. In the trial, the susceptibility level of each clone has been recorded in terms of percent crown damage since 2007. We used a linear regression model to explore the relationship between susceptibility and reproductive success (female and male).
Results : The clones revealed a clear gender dimorphism with an approximate 2:2:1 male/female/hermaphrodite ratio. Females with low levels of crown damage produced substantially more seeds compared to highly damaged females. The male clone with the lowest level of susceptibility was the most effective pollen donor, but highly susceptible males also sired some offspring.

There is a scarcity of studies addressing this issue for clonal Eucalypt stands in Brazil. Thus, this paper aims to develop a compatible individual-tree and stand-level growth and yield system for clonal Eucalypt stands in Brazil. The dataset used in this study is derived from remeasurement information of sixteen TECHS sites. At every site, eleven Eucalypt clones were planted in single block plots, while extra plots under a rainfall exclusion regime were also installed in fourteen sites. Prediction and projection diameter percentile equations were developed, as well as an individual-tree mortality equation and a generalized height-diameter equation. In addition, a detailed explanation of the structural architecture of the developed compatible growth and yield system is provided. Differences when forecasting forest afforestation and updating forest inventories were highlighted in order to provide the proper use of the developed growth and yield system. Finally, the individual-tree equations were validated through the use of the rainfall exclusion regime plots as was the growth and yield system when applied for prediction and projection purposes. The individual-tree level equations provided accurate estimates. The newly developed compatible growth and yield system also displayed unbiased and accurate estimates. The system achieved full compatibility between individual-tree and stand-level estimates and produced accurate stand table estimates. The growth and yield system presented is a powerful analytical tool that can serve to update inventory data in tropical Brazil and also to provide estimates for expected forest afforestation. The system has the capability of providing detailed outputs, which allows forest managers to consider merchandizing the clonal Eucalypt stands into multiple products.
