[Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Microwave backscatter from vegetated surfaces is influenced by vegetation structure and vegetation water content (VWC), which varies with meteorological conditions and moisture in the root zone. Radar backscatter observations are used for many vegetation and soil moisture monitoring applications under the assumption that VWC is constant on short timescales. This research aims to understand how backscatter over agricultural canopies changes in response to diurnal differences in VWC due to water stress. A standard water-cloud model and a two-layer water-cloud model for maize were used to simulate the influence of the observed variations in bulk/leaf/stalk VWC and soil moisture on the various contributions to total backscatter at a range of frequencies, polarizations, and incidence angles. The bulk VWC and leaf VWC were found to change up to 30% and 40%, respectively, on a diurnal basis during water stress and may have a significant effect on radar backscatter. Total backscatter time series are presented to illustrate the simulated diurnal difference in backscatter for different radar frequencies, polarizations, and incidence angles. Results show that backscatter is very sensitive to variations in VWC during water stress, particularly at large incidence angles and higher frequencies. The diurnal variation in total backscatter was dominated by variations in leaf water content, with simulated diurnal differences of up to 4 dB in X- through Ku-bands (8.6-35 GHz) . This study highlights a potential source of error in current vegetation and soil monitoring applications and provides insights into the potential use for radar to detect variations in VWC due to water stress. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (auteur) The present paper discusses the diffusion approximation of the linear Boltzmann equation in cases where the collision frequency is not uniformly large in the spatial domain. Our results apply for instance to the case of radiative transfer in a composite medium with optically thin inclusions in an optically thick background medium. The equation governing the evolution of the approximate particle density coincides with the limit of the diffusion equation with infinite diffusion coefficient in the optically thin inclusions. [Termes IGN] rétrodiffusionRésumé : (Auteur) It is sometimes difficult to monitor the water level of reservoirs with a sloping bank – such as many lakes and earth-dam embankment – using terrestrial techniques or airborne instruments. A proposed alternative is a new technique using a terrestrial near-infrared Lidar mounted with a large incidence angle (at least between 40° and 70°). This technique assumes that the Lidar can detect the (sub-)surface of a water body provided that it contains enough suspended particles to backscatter the light emitted by the instrument to its detector. Tests performed with a commercial Lidar show that the technique can be used to estimate the water level of a reservoir with moderate accuracy (within 10.05 m [p = 0.95]) when the water is very turbid (Secchi depth Numéro de notice : A2011-521 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2011.01.009 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2011.01.009 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=31415

[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne laser scanning (ALS) data are increasingly being used for land cover classification. The amplitudes of echoes from targets, available from full-waveform ALS data, have been found to be useful in the classification of land cover. However, the amplitude of an echo is dependent on various factors such as the range and incidence angle, which makes it difficult to develop a classification method which can be applied to full-waveform ALS data from different sites, scanning geometries and sensors. Additional information available from full-waveform ALS data, such as range and echo width, can be used for radiometric calibration, and to derive backscatter cross section. The backscatter cross section of a target is the physical cross sectional area of an idealised isotropic target, which has the same intensity as the selected target. The backscatter coefficient is the backscatter cross section per unit area. In this study, the amplitude, backscatter cross section and backscatter coefficient of echoes from ALS point cloud data collected from two different sites are analysed based on urban land cover classes. The application of decision tree classifiers developed using data from the first study area on the second demonstrates the advantage of using the backscatter coefficient in classification methods, along with spatial attributes. It is shown that the accuracy of classification of the second study area using the backscatter coefficient (kappa coefficient 0.89) is higher than those using the amplitude (kappa coefficient 0.67) or backscatter cross section (kappa coefficient 0.68). This attribute is especially useful for separating road and grass.
